The First Museum of MetaFilter In-Jokes in Second Life is now open.

It's kind of small and minimal but it is my tribute to MeFi and all the profundity and lulz it has given me. All the artifacts (except for the admin portraits) are free to copy (full perms), and there is a little hangout area for informal 10th Anniversary meetups through the weekend. Careful around the shark tank.

CAVEAT: Don't get too used to that location. I'm moving the whole thing to a less laggy parcel next week.

Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (secondlife) isn't associated with any program.
Are those of you who accessed the site running IE? Really?

Cranberry, Second Life is a downloadable application thingie, it's not something you can view in the web browser.

I joined Second Life about 2 years ago for about 1 day. I got stuck in some land where everyone was hanging out at some bondage strip club. The pinnacle of my fun was running full speed into people.

Have things changed much?

Whoa. I just realized that, for the first time in ages, I actually have a machine powerful enough to make loading SL usable. I may have to try this.

I just recently got a new Mac Mini and had the same reaction. I was like, "Oh! Second Life is kind of cool when it's not one big gray mass."

@Quin: yes sometimes, places with lot's to see still take ages to rez and if it is busy with avatars it is very laggy. But since most of sl is empthy now, it is not annoying.

The lag varies depending on parcels? Is this some sort of attempt to artificially create undesirable locations, or e-slums? Are there virtual hipsters who when gentrify the e-slums and add in artificial attractions to these artificial locations? Would there then be revolts against those who try to cash in on the imaginary appeal of non-existent property?

If so, I'm in.

Okay, that is pretty neat.

However, the plate of beans appears to be refried beans. I may be overthinking this, but I don't think that was what was intended in the original reference.

Yes, I always imagined the metaphorical plate to be lima beans or perhaps Boston baked beans. Green beans are right out though. (In my sleep, I'm a literal beanplater.)

I thought we could interpret the beans as to what was more locally available - say for me in Tokyo it's more likely to be a plate of edamame than refried beans.
