Meet Cortex in Denver meetup 10/6/2009

Jet Blue is bringing Cortex to Denver, and we're going to have a meetup on 10/6 to celebrate. I'll suggest Falling Rock (1919 Blake St. Denver, CO 80202) as the default place unless someone has a different place they'd like to try.

Nice embedded carriage return up there. Sigh. I currently have a conflict that night but I'll get out of it.

Unembedded that for you. Looking forward to seeing people!

wow, that's exactly when I'm flying out of the state.

Bravo dr. fresh for taking up the reins again. I second Falling Rock--Marlowe's was ok that one time... but not that great.

boo-radley: that's a shame. Alas, I fear we will never meet...

I'll be there. I gotta be there, I've missed too many lately. Is there anything definitively Denver that we should do since Cortex is visiting? Does Casa Bonita serve drinks?

Casa Bonita? That's a cruel way to sabotage Cortex's next stop.

Wait, wait: Cortex, are you heading to NC after Denver?
posted by boo_radley at 12:08 AM on August 23, 2009

NC precedes Denver by a significant margin, actually.

Cortex has been cloned by the Raelians. It is the only way to explain how he can be everywhere all the time.

Dang, that's too bad.

I'm not sure what'll be playing, but Lion's Lair is usually a good time, and, as a nerdy nerd, The 404 Club.

Dangg fieldtrip--we missed you. Welcome back!

Casa Bonita does serve drinks, but at such a slow rate you may turn to the food for solace. That would be a grave mistake. I've also been to the Casa in the last three weeks, I can't bring myself to go again so soon.

Chicken-and-egg question: pick a place based on where cortex will be staying, or cortex will decide where he's staying based on place picked?
posted by jazon at 1:37 PM on August 23, 2009

I don't actually know where I'm gonna stay at this point, so insofar as that streamlines the ontological dilemma above, there you go. Heh.

If anybody has crash space, awesome, but if not then I'll just be fairly unscientifically finding a motel or whatever Somewhere In Denver, so suggestions along those lines (and logistics surrounding getting to/from carless) are totally welcome.

I was mostly joking about Casa Bonita. Sheez. Cortex, I have a spare room and one of those inflatable mattress things...but, I also have a high energy dog so you might have to be a dog person to enjoy it. I'm in Lowry (6 miles due east of downtown) and on a bus route to downtown. Let me know...

Falling Rock is always good, old stanby that it is. I don't know 404 Club or Lion's Lair...though if Lion's Lair has live music I'm guessing it is hard to have conversation?

"stanby" means standby.

I'm coming, but if I have my way I'm gonna need an embedded carriage return, if you take my meaning...

I have a good spare bedroom with a relatively comfy Ikea bed that gets good light in the mornings. And I might have a spare car (I'm having trouble selling my old Subaru). And I work from home, so my schedule is pretty free for person-shuttling. Also, I'm very close (~2 miles, five or ten minutes' drive) to downtown.

Finally, according to google maps, it's only about a thousand yards from my house to Casa Bonita. So if you're looking to commit suicide in a creative way, or if you simply miss the ambiance of old-time minstrel shows but prefer entertainment that caricatures Mexicans rather than black people, well, I've got you covered there.

Heh. Thanks both of you; koeselitz's Ikea bed probably beats fieldtrip's air mattress so that probably wins, but much obliged in either case. koeselitz, you want to swap phone/address details via email maybe?

We're all offering stuff of ours? Um... I've got...

Well anyways I'll be at the meet-up!

cortex,

If you can show up a few days early, Insane Clown Posse will be in Denver on October 2.
posted by lukemeister at 6:07 PM on August 24, 2009

Yes, I think it can be safely said that dinner at Casa Bonita and an Insane Clown Posse concert pretty much add up to the quintessential Denver experience.

Does dr. fresh get another check for $100 for hosting this meetup?

Since my Casa Bonita suggestion went over so well let me throw out some other ideas to be shot down: Lucky Strike (there is bowling and liquor, possibly some good LoDo douche and hipster watching) and PS Lounge (divey bar on east Colfax that looks like it has been in a time capsule since the '70s). Any other ideas?

Bowling, liquor, and douchespotting?

*steeples fingers*
posted by cortex (staff) at 9:47 PM on August 25, 2009

I'm cool with Lucky Strike. I is awesome at throwing the ball down those little troughs either side of the nice wood floors. PS Lounge too. Just put me down as an avid supporter of whatever you suggest, fieldtrip.

Sorry to be so hard on the Casa Bonita idea, but I was just there and am still healing :). I don't want to rob cortex of the experience. I'm up for anywhere.

fieldtrip: PS Lounge (divey bar on east Colfax that looks like it has been in a time capsule since the '70s). Any other ideas?

Okay, I am casting a strong vote for the awesome PS Lounge. That used to be my bar - I lived down Cook St. about two blocks away. It's sincerely a classic for its utter weirdness; the owner is a crazy old greek dude named Pete (just like every other greek guy who owns a restaurant in Denver.) He gets somewhat insulted when people make the mistake (as they constantly do) and assume that he's the same greek Pete who owns Pete's Kitchen, Pete's Ice Cream, etc just down the block; I think there's some vague competition there, since PS Pete also owns a couple restaurants around there (for example, that 1515 place across from PS.) He has interesting customs, such as insisting on giving couples each a rose and traditionally giving out a free shot of utterly horrific Alabama Slammer (he seems to make them with Tang instead of orange juice for some reason) to everybody who walks in when the place is lively.

The place is indeed covered to the gills with odd and rather random crap that you can't quite figure how it got there. Pete's not really a football fan so far as I could tell, but they have these little trophies all around of all the different football teams circa 1982; he does like Greek music and the old crooner stuff - Sinatra, Dean Martin, etc - which explains the awesome, awesome juke box whose contents are an inexplicable array of crooner classics, 70s hits, and relatively modern rock like Nirvana with some Greek folk tunes thrown in for flavor, although that doesn't even begin to do it justice; for some reason a whole lot of perfect things seem to be on there, although I guess that's just the nature of juke boxes.

There are pool tables in the back and numerous posters of Frank Sinatra, some very random bowling trophies, I think a poster with all of the champion pool players from the 1930s, and other stuff.

And it's connected with a rather good pizza place, Enzo's, so there's good food there as well.

The only drawback, really, is that there's no tap - everything's in bottles. A big change from Falling Rock, but I think we could make do. I say it's better than spotting LoDo douches, although there are douches everywhere if you know where to look.
posted by koeselitz at 1:57 AM on August 27, 2009

Enzo's has great pizza, and if you're in the mood for a great steak, you can run across the street to Bastien's.

Would you all actually come out to the east side for the PS Lounge? I'd love it. I really like that place. Located a few blocks east of Colorado on the south side of Colfax, 3416 E Colfax Ave, Denver, CO. Koselitz is right about the juke box being awesome...though it was broken the last time I was there (for which Pete gave everyone a round). But, that was probably a month ago so I reckon it will be fixed by meetup time.

Make that...located a few blocks west of Colorado on Colfax.

PS Lounge is only 3-4 miles away from Falling Rock. That makes no difference for me, says the guy driving from work in Longmont to the meetup. If we think we can fit and it's quiet enough to hear Cortex's stories from the near end of his travels, I'm fine with anywhere. Especially as he's going from Boston to NYC via Denver.

I'm in for the meetup. Cortex, if the whole spare bedroom thing falls through, I have a couch, and I live about 5 blocks from a light rail station.
