Why, oh why (oh why oh) must classical mythology continually be misrepresented in contemporary culture? When I took my children to see Disney's Hercules, I was appalled to see Hercules turned into the son of both Zeus and Hera, who were portrayed as a loving couple. The mind boggles.

Here we have not cupid, but five cupid-like animated flying objects. Cupid did not have a bunch of deputies flying around doing his bidding. Neither was he eternally an infant. If you'll remember the story of Cupid and Psyche, he grew up into a very hott man. If we must have animation, can we not have a picture of a single hunk flying around shooting arrows. Loincloth optional.

Why, oh why (oh why oh) must classical mythology remain a stale and stagnant beast? Why can't it be updated, made relevent, so the lessons and morals and point of the story be digested and understood in an easy-to-eat (mmm, paaaaablum) manner?

If the message that Cupid spreads love and love should be spread can be said to have meaning in today's culture, then why not bring it up to date.

Questioning hokey JavaScript makes the baby cupid cry.

Well, if you can get Ovid to do a rewrite, go for it.

Or perhaps you're arguing that Disney's Hercules and/or the five winged whatevers are more relevant than the originals? I think not.

Besides, what's more up to date than a hunk shooting arrows?

Well, if you can get Ovid to do a rewrite, go for it.

See, but that's what's great about works of art entering the public domain. They can be changed and modified as need be to have a message delivered to a specific audience.

The gospels, f'rinstance, were written for a specific audience because the story and message of Christ's life was deemed important, and a good way to get people to give you fish and stuff.

Or perhaps you're arguing that Disney's Hercules and/or the five winged whatevers are more relevant than the originals? I think not.

Ask any kid how they'd rather be taught a lesson, in a pretty cartoon with talking furry beasts and amusingly vain bad guys or by reading some crazy dead language. Or isn't translation bringing a story into a relevant mode of delivery?

Besides, what's more up to date than a hunk shooting arrows?

Hrm. Can't argue with good taste.

I had no problem with the portrayal of Hades in Disney's Hercules. My problem was with turning Zeus and Hera into a happy, faithful couple, which completely undercuts the basis of much of classical mythology (without Zeus's inability to keep his toga closed and Hera's inability to look the other way, a whole lot of the stories disappear). Nothing was gained by that change; the story was simply made less complex. Bowdlerized, if you will.

Similarly, you wouldn't want to retell the gospels and replace the crucifixion of Christ with a case of Measles or something. Certain elements are vital to the story. What I worry about is a generation of kids growing up with the wrong information. An adaptation that doesn't lie and that might lead kids to explore further the real story is good. Needlessly changing the facts and obscuring the real point is bad.

Translation: give me my hunk shooting an arrow, or the downfall of western civilization is on your head.

Hehe. I think it's funny.

And anyway, Greek mythology was not one big set of ideas codified on a stone tablet. It was dynamic, it was adaptive, it was inclusive. The idea that there is a definite set of images that if you were Greek, you believed in, is incorrect. Hurray for Pantheism!

I don't know for sure, but I would guess that the idea of a unified Classical Greek Mythology was created by monotheistic scholars much later..

And look at them fly! Wheeeee!

But I do agree with you that teaching children a version of a culture's mythology that you yourself are making up outside of that culture is a bit inappropriate. I'm not sure how well the two statements I've made here mesh with each other, but there must be some middle ground. Maybe it's that Matt didn't imply any sort of connection to Greek or Roman culture.. ?

My problem was with turning Zeus and Hera into a happy, faithful couple, which completely undercuts the basis of much of classical mythology (without Zeus's inability to keep his toga closed and Hera's inability to look the other way, a whole lot of the stories disappear).

So then it's harmful to portray the gods as a happy couple? Why does Zeus need to turn into a bull and boink happy farm girls to make a demigod, why can't he just say "Poof, you're a demigod?"

Hera's jealousy can focus on Zeus not paying attention to her. She can still take her vanity out on the pathetic half-breeds so Herc can run around with his loincloth and pass his tests. How much of the moral is tied up in the infidelity? Not a whole heck of a lot.

True, there's some sacrifice of plot and character development, but that's stuff secondary to the moral anyway. Mythology's about the message, not Hermes.

Er, the messenger.

Nothing was gained by that change; the story was simply made less complex. Bowdlerized, if you will.

So when I discuss developing software and use jargon and get blank stares, that's better then making it less complex so my message is gotten across better? Huh. Well, looks like my people skills are bang on then! :-)

Similarly, you wouldn't want to retell the gospels and replace the crucifixion of Christ with a case of Measles or something.

No, but you could retell the gospels and make a Good San Franciscan hire a former boo.com employee and still get the point across.

Certain elements are vital to the story.

Certain lessons are vital to the story, everything else is just brain candy.

What I worry about is a generation of kids growing up with the wrong information.

Heh. They won't know the ancient lie quite as well as you? I can hear Mrs. Lovejoy

An adaptation that doesn't lie and that might lead kids to explore further the real story is good. Needlessly changing the facts and obscuring the real point is bad.

But the real point isn't being obscured it's being repackaged in an envelope that the kids enjoy, that will spark their curiosity more than a dusty old tome that's heavier than they are.

Translation: give me my hunk shooting an arrow, or the downfall of western civilization is on your head.

Bill HIcks on Easter:

I've been travelling a lot lately. I was over in Australia during Easter. It was interesting to note that they celebrate Easter the same way as we do - commemorating the death and resurrection of Jesus by telling our children a giant bunny rabbit left chocolate eggs in the night. I wonder why we're so messed up as a race? You know, I've read the Bible - can't find the words "bunny" or "chocolate" in the whole book. Where do we get this stuff from? And why those two things? Why not "goldfish left Lincoln logs in our sock drawers"? I mean, as long as we are making things up, why not go hog wild?

Easter, of course, has its roots in paganism. It's yet another instance of Christianity taking an existing pagan holiday and using it for its own purposes. Bunnies and eggs are both good symbols of spring, as is, of course, the resurrection. Symbols from many mythologies can coexist peacefully, and I say the more the merrier, especially insofar as it permits me the opportunity to nibble on chocolate bunny ears. I mean, you don't really think the Christmas tree is a Christian symbol, do you?

Where do we get this stuff from?

sadly, it's all very sensible and not all that funny. Easter is named for the Norse goddess of fertility, Eastre. it's the festival of spring, rebirth, etc... bunnies are famous breeders, eggs are the beginning of life, & the festival is held on the first sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox. Christmas, likewise, is a celebration of the return of light, held on what was the winter solstice by the Julian calendar - & taking evergreens inside reminds us that the earth isn't dead, it's just hibernating. Yay pagans!

Ok, the chocolate component is a mystery. I'll give you that.
