London meetup? September 29, 2009 2:18 PM   Subscribe

Isn't it about time we had another London meetup?

I hesitate even to bring it up, since I have been particularly bad about attending them of late, but it seems that we haven't had a London meetup in a while. Anybody up for one?

Picnic season is probably pretty much past us, but how about planning to meet somewhere that has a nice outdoors but also a pleasant indoors, in case of iffy or bad weather. Maybe on a Saturday afternoon? Say the 17th of October?

Sometime I should propose an Oxford meetup. But only because I'm lazy.

London meetup sounds good though.

I'd be up for another meet. Up. Meetup.

This has just reminded me that there were noises made at the London 10th meetup (Friday version) about a Brighton meetup in September. We have just over 7 hours...

Sound good (London, 17th, I mean)

Sometime I should propose an Oxford meetup. But only because I'm lazy.

If we hold it near Marble Arch you can get the Tube there like everybody else.

If you have it on the 24th, that will be my birthday. Not suggesting you have any reason to celebrate my birthday, just...

...it's OK, I don't need to get my coat. I don't even bother to take it off any more.
posted by Grangousier at 12:45 PM on October 2, 2009

Do I count 5 or 6 of us sort of saying yes, then?

Grangousier, I have nothing against the 24th except that I'm supposed to be in Newcastle then. But I'm probably going to end up staying here, so that's another option.

So? Anyone? When and where would we like to do this?

Will this be open to anyone or just the members of the Platinum Club? 'Cos, you know, I'm not even up to Plastic-Fake-Bronze membership status yet ...
posted by essexjan at 8:27 AM on October 3, 2009

If I get to go, then it's definitely open to anyone:-)

Anyway, essexjan, you are about 5 membership levels ahead of me!

I'm in!

*checks mefi-o-meter*

On arriving unranked will I have to sit outside with a coke and a bag of cheese n' onion?

So: 17th or 24th? Preferences?
posted by sueinnyc at 3:58 PM on October 4, 2009

The 24th if Grangousier wants a meet-up on his birthday, otherwise the 17th. I'm easy (but not cheap it must be said - actually I don't have plans for either night so...).

I vote for the 17th. I can't make the 24th, unfortunately.
posted by permafrost at 3:10 AM on October 5, 2009

17th please.

The 17th is perfect.

I can't make the 17th.

The 17th is imperfect.

(I mentioned my birthday, incidentally, because I'll most likely be having dinner with my wife on that night. Not that I don't do that every night, but, you know...)

Sorry I didn't get to the 10th meetings, by the way. I spent most of July in a convent.

Isn't there an easier way of setting up "event" on here? One thread per month, urgh.

I actually run a monthly "drinks night" in London which I'd be happy to invite MeFites along to. It's billed as "20s and 30s" but it's not that strict ;)

SO: Shall we schedule something? Who is still in? The 17th and the 24th are both imperfect, though it looks to me as if the 17th is slightly ahead.

KMH, I like your suggestion too.

Wow I'm sorry for chiming in so late here! I had two political speaking engagements earlier this week as well as some Uni crap, so between that rather time consuming stuff and work I wasn't MeFi-ing or doing anything fun at all.

Mrs Mutant & I are available tomorrow evening / afternoon / what & where did you folks have in mind?
posted by Mutant at 5:44 AM on October 16, 2009

I think that today has slipped away from us. Sorry (especially to the Mutant household).

Shall we go ahead and plan something for the 24th? I'd still be up for that as long as others would.
posted by sueinnyc at 8:46 AM on October 17, 2009

The 24th is fine by us, are we still looking at Central London / Marble Arch with timing as late afternoon / early evening?
posted by Mutant at 5:15 AM on October 18, 2009

Mutant, that still works for me.

Since everyone else is being silent (I suspect that we have slipped too far down), shall we pin it as say 4 or 5 p.m. on the 24th and hope that others will join us? Do you recommend a particular venue?

(Feel free to pick and tag if you like, while I am out galavanting tomorrow.)

To get this on the sidebar ASAP, let's say same place as the 10th anniversary party: Duke of York, Marylebone from 4pm onwards on Saturday the 24th.

I'd love to make a London meetup, but I can only ever do this on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Not looking to derail this or anything, but can I plant a seed for (a) next time?

I'm not going to be around this weekend, so can someone have a gin & tonic for me and grumble about they're not being any good cake? Thanks bunches.

I'm out of town this weekend. Tomorrow is my birthday and we're heading down to Paris.
Have fun!

Just saw this, I will try and make it.

On arriving unranked will I have to sit outside with a coke and a bag of cheese n' onion?

If you do, I will also sit outside and attempt to blag crisps off you. (Or buy my own, I guess).

Mrs Mutant & I will be there, this place is sorta uptown, hopefully there won't be any dress code stuff going on.

grumble about they're not being any good cake

Hey! I was gonna bake something!!

I'm in. As we're close to London's Arab district, it'd be good to get some Lebanese food later in the evening, if anyone's up for it.
posted by essexjan at 11:27 AM on October 22, 2009

It's neater Edgware Road than Marylebone proper, so don't worry about it bring posh.

We should also organise an excursion to key that nice Mr Blair's car.
posted by cillit bang at 12:05 PM on October 22, 2009

Lebanese food sounds like an excellent idea. And Mutant, I think that you should bake something!

Balls, completely missed this thread. Can't makie it, I'm afraid, but have a great time!

Wow, just saw this, I might try to pop by as I am not too far away.

Sorry guys - something came up here in The East End that makes it difficult to travel out of the 'hood today, so we won't be making it.

Have a great time and definitely catch you all next meetup.

I'm at the Duke of York linked above (or at least I was a moment ago) and no one else is here. Is there pub confusion again?

Mutant, sorry to hear you can't make it.

Hurray! There are people here now!

And I have the sign!

My photos are up. I didn't get two usernames. Let me know them and I'll change them. I didn't want to post your real names because, well, I'm funny about that myself.
posted by essexjan at 4:15 PM on October 24, 2009

My photos (all four of them!) are up too.

It was lovely seeing everyone, and meeting a couple of people for the first time. We really must meet up more often!

essexjan: I'm Simon. Rhonda isn't on MeFi. Feel free to tag her by her first name (or as Ms Jest if you prefer).

That was a most pleasant meetup, good to see cillit bang and Grangousier again, and to meet the rest of you for the first time.

Should definitely do it again soon.
