November Austin meet-up

Anyone interested in a November meet-up? Last one was about the music fest (location wise) the previous was about beer, i was thinking maybe the focus on this one could be food. I'm a wannabe foodie, but i really don't have any suggestions.

It doesn't have to be based on food though. Post any suggestions.

I'm interested, depending on time and if I think my scooter can make the drive.

Count me in.
I'm more beerie than foodie, but can I say that without sound like a drunk?

I keep missing them but I'll really try to make this one.

What about the 21st Annual Lone Star Vegetarian Cook Off on Sunday, November 15th at the Burnet farmer's market?

"The cook-off is also open to the public and admission is only $7 for adults (13 years and older), $3 for children 6-12 years, and free for children 5 and younger. Attendees get to taste all the vegan chilis and vote for their favorite."

Not to sound like a wuss, but don't they usually replace the meat with extra heat in "hot" vegan cooking? My point of refrence for this is the hot sauce at mr. natural and the way too hot vegan black beans at Magnolia Cafe.

But that does sound like fun, if not horribly painful.

Feh. I'll be out of town on the weekend of the 15th. I swear that I'll make it to one of these, one day.

Pants! How did you know I like farmer's markets and chili and voting?

I think I can go to this.

Asia Cafe (formerly inside Asia Market) at 183 and Spicewood.
No alkeehawl and damn good food.
posted by Seamus at 7:10 PM on November 3, 2009

if we go somewhere with no beer, we'll have to just go to a bar after too. This could be the most complicated meet-up ever.
posted by djduckie at 5:02 AM on November 4, 2009

hopefully we can drink vegan beer with vegan chili.
posted by Pants! at 6:36 AM on November 4, 2009

I think we should drink MEAT beer with our vegan chili.
posted by dirtdirt at 6:54 AM on November 4, 2009

That's not chili. It's bean stew.
posted by sanko at 7:22 AM on November 4, 2009

I hate myspace, but I have to.

Porkfelwein

Not meat beer, but meat cider.

And when I want vegan chili, I eat chiles.
Not that vegan chili can't be good.
djduckie, the truth is that many vegan cooks replace not meat with heat, but flavor with heat.
Yeah, meat adds umami, but there are vegan ways to get that. What the hell happened to other herbs and spices in vegan cookery?
I used to live around the corner from Mothers and ate there as rarely as possible (until a few years ago) because their cooks couldn't figure out how to use any spice other than cayenne. Luckily, they have improved.

Personally, I would vote against the CHili Cook-off based entirely on the fact that such things are great places to meet small groups of friends that you don't particularly want to talk to. Not ideal.

Wait, so are we going to this chili thing or not? Let me know so I have enough time to find my chili boots.
posted by bluishorange at 8:15 AM on November 5, 2009

chili boots?
posted by Pants! at 11:04 AM on November 5, 2009

How about hunting with my father in law? He can show us all how to be real men in Llano...or something else without too much chili involved.
posted by ejoey at 2:41 PM on November 5, 2009

I vote for hunting with the ejoeys.
posted by djduckie at 5:43 PM on November 5, 2009

Maybe Nov. isn't good for people, there seems to be a really lackluster response. Not discounting those that have responded.
posted by djduckie at 6:13 AM on November 6, 2009

Chili boots.
posted by bluishorange at 10:39 AM on November 6, 2009

ejoey, I want to go hunting.
We could kill some pigs and I'll bbq 'em for everyone. Except the vegetarians. For them I will make a seitan pad prik king.
Just so there won't be any beer, we'll all drink whiskey. And mayhaw agua fresca.
Chili boots are not required, but chili underdrawers are.

So are we doing this? I'd love a November meetup before finals.

I would like a meetup after finals, too.
posted by spikeleemajortomdickandharryconnickjrmints at 2:01 PM on November 7, 2009

Ok y'all, we've got to become friends so we can eventually do the hunting meetup for reals.

Hunting. A good thing. You can come stay in Kingsland with me.

I don't think it helps that this thread has dropped off the front page. So are we calling one yet or not?

Well we got two sundays before thanksgiving weekend, so next week or the week after? Dog and Duck? I've never been there. Not food, related, but i think we tend to be more of a beer bunch anyway.
posted by djduckie at 6:48 PM on November 8, 2009

Dog and Duck is great. Lots of beer selection, good veggie burgers, veggie wraps, beef burgers, salads, fish and chips, etc.

I vote for this Sunday purely out of my own self-interest.

I second being good for America in this manner. And for similar reasons.
posted by dirtdirt at 10:08 AM on November 9, 2009

Maybe we can decide on a date and get this over on the side.
I speak up for this Sunday, too.

I think D&D is a good central location.

Though I wouldn't turn up my nose at a good South Austin establishment. I wouldn't turn up my nose at a North side place neither.

Or we could go to the East Side Showroom for some tasty, creative cocktails and whatever $2 beer they have on tap this week.

I won't link to their flashy, weird, overly done website. But I like the place.

Full disclosure, my BiL works there, but I am a notoriously disloyal person when it comes to libations and comestibles. It is also relatively new and, thus, would be good for America.
posted by Seamus at 12:59 PM on November 9, 2009

Ok we are on the side for the date.

Now we just need to pick the location and start time. Our location options are:

Pour House
Dog and Duck
East Side showroom.

I'm down for whatever, since i have to make the drive up to burnett anyway to pick-up xezlec.

If anyone wants to suggest anything else though, feel free.
posted by djduckie at 2:37 PM on November 9, 2009

My vote:

3pm @ Dog & Duck so we can hopefully enjoy a bit of sunlight and decent weather.

Who's bringing the "Are you here from the internet?" sign? If someone wants to bring "Hello, my name is" stickers I'll bring a Sharpie.

Somehow I missed this thread and didn't see it until I was looking at the sidebar. Fontophilic and I will try to be there!

(Just to clarify: it's at 3pm at Dog and Duck on Sunday, November 15th, 2009, yes? This thread has many suggestions.)

yes(?)

Hm, perhaps I'll make my first appearance. I'm scared of people from the internet, but I'm least scared of people from Metafilter.
posted by ishotjr at 4:55 PM on November 12, 2009 [2 favorites]

well ishotjr there's nothing to feel threatened about.

we did decide on 3pm at dog and duck.

Anyone interested in board or card games? I was thinking i might bring Kill doctor lucky and/or mille borne. Any other suggestions or am i just a nerd and it's not really appropriate or the place?
posted by djduckie at 5:03 PM on November 12, 2009

I'll try to make it. I had sworn off D&D since they changed their fish supplier and portions, but I'm good for a pint or three. Might bring the missus and small format.
posted by medium format at 8:11 AM on November 13, 2009

Will bluishorange still bring the chili boots?
posted by medium format at 8:35 AM on November 13, 2009

I might have to bring a shorty too.
posted by Seamus at 9:20 AM on November 13, 2009

Yeah, don't know how I missed this either, but count me in. My previous "are you here from the internet?" signs are MIA, but here's a PDF for any eager beavers.

Forecast looks like afternoon rain, so it sounds like a good excuse to spend time inside with a beer.

I was about to list some bus routes but there are at least 15 with in 2 blocks. There is limited parking, as I recall, but Sundays shouldn't be an issue.
posted by fontophilic at 9:42 AM on November 13, 2009

Board games yes. Chili boots maybe.

We've got family portraits scheduled at 4pm. Outdoors. If it rains I'll be there, otherwise I'll either be leaving early or showing up late. Hopefully not too late.

Wow, malthas and fontophilic apparently really keep those meetups together. I had a great time! Yay meeting pants!. Yay meeting that dude at the end of the table who lurked in real life! Yay meeting ejoey (or whatever)! Yay djduckie giving me homebrew! I'll let you know what I think about it.

I went from Dog and Duck to Freddie's, where I met a friend (that dude and his kid who showed up). That place is awesome, and they had an amazing gypsy/swing band, and I gushed on my friend when he asked "so what's that whole MetaFilter thing about."

Yay djduckie giving me homebrew! it's worth repeating.

Nice meeting y'all. Yay for lurking in real life!

Is Zalgo-thing supposed to look like something other than a bunch of rectangles?

Hooray for beer and real life! That Zalgo looks cool on a PC, crap on a Mac (what a world!).
