Recap on Toronto mini-meetup details (Friday the 13th of November)

Recap on MeFi Toronto mini-meetup details: This Friday the 13th at 7:30 at Nirvana on College at Bathurst. With any luck, early arrivals will inform door staff of the word “MetaFilter” so latecomers can find us (important).

In general I think there is a flaw in our systems here in that we spend an entire thread deciding where to go, but there is no reliable or predictable place that puts all the details in one location. So I have been hacking that with custom posts that put everything in one place.

Theoretically the meetup is only sidebarred once a date/location have been settled on but I guess that isn't the way this sort of thing has been happening.

See ya there!

Thanks for the summary! I'm running out to a long day of teaching, but hope to be one of the early-ish people.

Has anyone made even a rough headcount so early arrivals can grab a large enough table?
posted by maudlin at 4:10 AM on November 13, 2009

I'll bring a paper "MetaFilter" sign to stick on the table. If you see a person brandishing such a sign, please wave.

If you guys are out super late I will try and meet up later as well.

Also, did anyone take pictures at the last meetup? Or should I assume it didn't happen?

We're all vampires now. We don't show up in pictures.

Definitely coming.

Sorry. Flu recovery yay! Drinking with you lot seems like a poor choice at this juncture.

I'm definitely in. Bathurst Streetcar, ahoy!

Melinika and I are going to be rather late, thanks to rush hour traffic to Toronto. Perhaps I could go look for a large "Thinking of You" card that we could sign and send to mathowie? Does anyone have any suggestions about what we could do or send to him?

Huh. Weird timing. I've got a drink fest organized a few doors down at Bistro 422 (yes..."The Beast") tonight for 8pm. I may drop by to say a shy (and drunk) "hi!"

I just went through this thread and the other one, and it looks like about 12 definitelys and 9 maybes... and a whole bunch of "really hard to tells". So table(s) for 16-ish (given that I think at the last Toronto meet-up, some of the "definitelys" and most of the "maybes" didn't show).

I'm heading over there in about 10 minutes. I'll either be there, or I'll be in the news.

Thanks, FishBike! I'm heading out and should be there 7:30-ish.

(Aww, DNAB! Doesn't beer count as "plenty of fluids"? No? Drat. Hope you're better soon.)

Ok, I'm here. Look for the table in the back half of the place with a paper MetaFilter sign taped to the end.

How late will this be going 'til? I'm stuck at work (Libery Village) for another hour-ish...

I want to go, but I'm currently still in Mississauga and am exhausted. :/

Crap, i thought it was going to start later and my commute time is at least an hour so I don't think I can make it. I would have checked meta before but my Internet was down. Have fun!

There was a really cute boy there.

We are still here, at least about seven of us. sevenyearlurk, you have to be more precise, there were a few cute boys here (^_^)

Yes, and well dressed for an heterosexualist.

I’ll try harder, or perhaps just different, next time. Perhaps Mt. Pleasant and Eglinton?

On the blueline heading home. It is about as much fun as you can imagine. Go drunks on the TTC! Sorry I missed you all this time.

Thanks for being v. nice and welcoming, guys. I'm sorry I had to leave before I could properly speak to the other table, I had had a really long day. Will come to more in the future.

ARGH FUCK.

At least it wasn't tehloki. Om nom nom nom.

Note for future meetups: Great Lakes Winter Ale is made of pain.

Thanks for making that a lot of fun!

Perhaps Mt. Pleasant and Eglinton?

That would be an excellent idea.

Wait, what? I missed another one? Dammit.

Mostly disappointed at missing another chance to meet FishBike and see if the universe implodes.

A question came up about whether or not any meetup could ever beat the Antarctica 10th anniversary. At the time it was felt that no meetup could top that one. I commend you for your outside-the-box thinking on this, because a meetup that implodes the universe would definitely be the best meetup ever.

I'd also have to add a 6th category to the FishBike scale of big mistakes, if we managed to collapse the universe somehow.

I had a lot of fun. Sorry for the monopolizing of Alnedra -- we should clone her so that there is more to go around. She's already pocket-sized, so we don't need to miniturize her ;)

There have been suggestions that the next Toronto meet-up ought to be uptown. We've had west, east and central (yes, iiha-penguin, Bathurst is central), so we should do north. Or as north as we'll get the lazy downtowners to go -- so Yonge and Eglington. There was a suggestion for a quiet pub up there.
posted by jb at 1:02 PM on November 17, 2009

If we're going to go uptown, we should just suck it up and go to a Korean bar at Finch or something. Is there any place in the city more soulless than Yonge and Eglington? (Don't answer that, it was a rhetorical question -- OH SNAP!?)

Sucks I missed the meet up. They are lots of fun.

EGLINTON.

Touché.

So if you type a street name in all caps, it acquires a soul? Awesome!
posted by maudlin at 3:34 PM on November 17, 2009

Don't be silly. Everyone knows that Eglington is really spelled with two g's, like it's said. The signs and maps are all just wrong.
posted by jb at 4:19 PM on November 17, 2009

I've never noticed that eglinton didn't have a 'g' in it. Wowzers. I do just call it 'egg' though.

Living at soulless Yonge and ScrambledEgglinton right now. There are a couple of pubs I can think of that would be good for a meet up.

Space and cheap drinks?

There's the Rose and Crown, and The Unicorn closer to Mt Pleasant.

I'd be up for another meetup in that area, especially if it's on a Friday night so I can just hop on the subway after work. As long as some contractor doesn't drill a hole in the subway tunnel again, of course.
posted by FishBike at 6:19 AM on November 20, 2009

I think I can go as far north as Eglinton without ill effects. Are those pubs conversation-friendly?
