Providence! Ahh, Providence, Rhode Island...
Home of Lovecraft's grave, The World's Largest Bug, and Buddy Cianci...
On Friday, November 20, I am taking the T to PVD to rendezvous with jcw in YFC, and we'd love to meet up with you folk, while visiting NONE of the attractions listed above!
I arrive at 7:11, so... 7:30 PM, at a drinking-drinks store of your choice somewhere near the T station. Yeah?

Technically he's not taking the subway to the airport, but yeah, let's hang out!

That's the commuter rail, you silly person.

And I'd love to drive down there, but unfortunately must go to New York that night for a memorial service. I keep missing all the Greater Boston meetups!

Yeah, I called Providence "Greater Boston". You wanna fight about it?
posted by backseatpilot at 10:13 AM on November 13, 2009

I'm confused. Is the meetup in Providence or near the airport? If it's near the airport, then there is a fantastic beer bar nearby called Track 84 which is inexpensive and nearly pretentionless.
posted by mkb at 10:17 AM on November 13, 2009

Sorry for the confusion. I blame enthusiasm.

I am indeed talking about the Providence MBTA Commuter Rail Station. The Amtrak "PVD". So, no, not near TFGreen.

...right next door to the Masonic Temple. [secret masonic greeting] to all my fellow bricklayers! We're scheduled to takeover Bank of America in December, right? Greeeaaat.

There is Union Station Brewery fairly close by (through the odd Waterplace Park). It's not as good as Trinity, but it's OK (and closer). Unless you'd rather go to the creepy liquor store on Washington and stagger around instead....

Underlines, strikeouts, and bolds, OH MY.

Put me in the maybe column. I'm potentially up for something.
posted by Plutor at 11:18 AM on November 13, 2009

I'll be picking up n_o_d so my only preference is a place that's decent to get to from the MBTA and a place with food as well as beer. Otherwise, anywhere is fine [but I guess the liquor store is out]. Yay purple line!

I'm in... tho since I have Fridays off, I won't be taking the commuter rail, just bicycling there. (I'm not sure I'd characterize the TPB as being "far" from the train station...)
posted by Slap*Happy at 1:21 PM on November 13, 2009

ALSO, in terms of population demographics, culture and trade, Providence and New Bedford are treated as a single metro area, and distinct from Boston. RI would not be in the shit as deeply if its economy was an offshoot of Boston's, and local Boston cuisine wouldn't suck so much if it were tied culturally to the home of the linguicia-dog.
posted by Slap*Happy at 1:31 PM on November 13, 2009 [1 favorite]

What is the TPB? Do they have food there? Can someone who can attend and lives nearby just pick something decent?
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 1:31 PM on November 13, 2009

Err... TBP, I mean. Trinity Brew Pub. I do my drinking on the upper east side, so I'm probably not the best authority on the nearby watering holes. I also like AS220, but that may be an unreasonable walk for folks.

Translation here,
substituting "Providence" for "R'lyeh".

And I'm gonna call this one for the Trinity, 7:30PM, Friday 11/20/09, unless I hear any strong objections.

Now how do I do the meetup-highlighting thingie...

ah Providence, how I miss ya.
Everything is close enough to everything else, for what it's worth. Have a drink for me.

Please, we're all gentlemen here in the Renaissance City. We throw people off piers, tied to anchors with a bullet in their mouth. The police write it up as suicide.

As a person who's taken dozens of roadtrips just to go to swan point and Loui's, I wish it were warmer, because I'd be there.

I would love to run down and see you crazy kids again, but no promises (yet). I've made a note of the date, time, and location, though.
posted by yhbc at 9:29 PM on November 13, 2009

It's not going to be moose-freezing weather up here. Sunny and in the 50's, same as in NYC. I know people in Texas who have to drive further than the distance from NYC to Prov'denz to just to buy groceries. I promise not to be squamous yet rugose, for what it's worth.
posted by Slap*Happy at 9:33 PM on November 13, 2009

Whoot! Trinity is within spitting distance of my house, so unless I'm dead, I'll be there.
posted by grapefruitmoon at 8:03 AM on November 14, 2009

PS: How could AS220 be an unreasonable walk if Trinity isn't? They're a block apart from each other. Also: haven't been to the new AS220 since TP closed down, does anyone know if it's any good? Man, I miss TP. They had some kickass quesadillas.

I can meet you guys at the train station and take you to Trinity.

Meeting two people at the train station is actually more difficult than meeting one. I've been to both places, I think we'll be fine. Thanks for the offer, we'll call if hopelessly lost.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 9:18 AM on November 14, 2009

For what its worth:
It is hard to miss people at the Providence train station. It's pretty much one not-so-big room.

Providence, as all discerning people know, is not :Greater Boston." It is "The Portland of the East Coast."
posted by GenjiandProust at 12:08 PM on November 14, 2009

I thought Portland was the Portland of the East Coast! And I was already at a Portland meetup. Now I'm very confused.
posted by not_on_display at 1:36 PM on November 14, 2009

No, it's like the Portland, OR of the East Coast!

I read it in a magazine! Because Providence is south of Boston and Protland, OR is south of Seattle!

No, it made no sense at the time, either.
posted by GenjiandProust at 2:59 PM on November 14, 2009

I've heard Providence called "Portland of the East Coast" too, though in a different context. I was listening to the radio some years ago and some folks were talking about how people were moving to Providence after college to live here (I don't know if that's still the case) and one of the people said, not intending it as a joke as far as I could tell, that Providence was "The Portland of the East Coast."
posted by Kattullus at 3:20 PM on November 14, 2009

Oh, and yeah, I pass by the train station when walking from home to Trinity so I might see you guys anyway.

Hrm, extremely tempting. I've got a pot luck that day, but if it ends early I'll pop over.

Both cities do have a history of significant corruption in city government. One of us got over it, though.

Mostly.

Our mayor may be the son of a Mafia lawyer but he's also openly gay. In your face, Portland! When are you gonna have an openly gay mayor, huh?!

Oh.

Well, we got there first.

I secretly love Providence (you had me at Waterfire), and meetupiness sounds like goodness, so I may take a trip down. Does anyone know how loud Trinity gets?
posted by Cat Pie Hurts at 3:10 PM on November 18, 2009

It wasn't too loud when we were there, compared to that noisy place in VT. We can scoot elsewhere if it's awful.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 3:11 PM on November 18, 2009

The downstairs is quieter, which is where we were the last time.

posted by Cat Pie Hurts at 5:09 PM on November 18, 2009

Yeah, Trinity's not bad on the loud scale. I can think of places in PVD that are way, way louder. It shouldn't be as bad as the Boston-Cortex meetup in which it was impossible to hear yourself think about considering to think.
