Just wondering what everyone who isn't headed for a meetup is doing for New Year's Eve, if anything? My hubby and I are going to see Avatar . . . . and you?

All this talk of New Years is really grating to those of us who don't use the Gregorian calendar. Those of use who follow the SIMULTANEOUS 4-DAY TIME CUBE celebrate this four times a year and you never hear us gloating about it.

I met a friend who was passing through town for coffee and a chat this evening, and later I'm going to a small party that would be pretty ideal if it weren't for the high chance most other people there will want to move to a club or a messy house party, so I'll have to choose whether to abandon ship or go somewhere uncomfortably full. Misgivings either way, yay!

The MetaChat comment up there is just reminding me to figure out why I've never managed to join successfully.

New Year's in the US was one of the hardest things for me to grok, culturally. In Iceland New Year's is a huge fucking deal, with family gatherings, thrumptillion fireworks, parties, huge bonfires, more parties, boozing and enough unwise casual sex to power a small English city.* In some way it's a bigger deal than Christmas because it's a communal crazefest. Every family has their bunch of fireworks, pretty much every Icelander sits down to watch (and then critique) the year-end comedy revue I mentioned above. It's over-the-top enough to have become a tourist attraction. It's my favorite holiday of the year.

I'm fluish-y yet my BF is making me refer to everything by the French noun (if not the gender) in prep for our trip.

"pass the bread please."

"que?"

"bre-ugh Pain s.v.p"

"Mais ceretemont!"

"fuck you."

"plus retare'."

The big result of this is that I'm drinking a bottle of La Fin Du Monde instead of my beloved Guinness.

I'm torn between wanting to do something and not wanting to go outside into the wet. I may end up just venturing to a bar a block or two away, having one drink and going "whee", and then packing it in.

My Ukranian roommate claimed earlier today that during the days of Soviet occupation, Christmas was "illegal" in the Ukraine, so families put up "New Year Trees" and exchanged "New Year's Eve presents" on the 31st instead of the 25th, so the fact that he was presenting me with a little something today was very appropriate (however, a small part of me wonders if this was something he thought up to cover his not having wrapped his gift until this afternoon).

When the last decade was starting, I remember being the only one around concerned about the time (mostly because I wanted to see if Y2k would go down on schedule).

The other kids were too busy running around and the Adults were all drunk and reminiscing of better days past to notice that THE FUTURE had begun 15 minutes ago...

Now flash forward to 2010, and THE FUTURE seems to have been mostly (with a few pleasant exceptions) a lousy advertising gimmick. The kids have all but left - some are still at play but others are engrossed in their own concerns. The Adults are still drunk and rambling, although nowadays it takes a bit less to do the job (also they've gotten rid of that awful facial hair/shirt/combover that used to make them feel young. liek, wtf were they thinking!).

It seems like it's just me again, faithfully watching the clock, naively anticipating THE REAL FUTURE. The only difference being I have a decade's worth of cynicism to keep my hopes from getting too high.

Oh and I get to pick the music this time around, and this kick-ass sound system

So I stayed in, watched a movie, and found myself rummaging through a trunk of shit I've saved for 25 years. I was literally howling with laughter between bouts of tears as I read through letters, poems, cards, diaries and journals that documented everything from my first kiss to first trips to losing my virginity, and other delights and disasters. I wrote about the '89 quake, the challenger explosion, 9/11, my fights with friends, my awareness of my mother's mental illness (first entry about this at age SIX!) and my father's attempts to hide it...to this day.

It's really funny how things work out. Staying in was a gift.

Don't feel bad -- I just started out the decade by writing an article about "Is property on the moon a crazy idea?" Did the research and found out the answer is NOT "well, duh" -- the answer is, "it depends on who's selling, and why". I'm starting out the decade confused.

(I kid you not -- this was an actual, real, genuine topic that was on a list of potential articles the web content company I write for wanted covered. It was quite simply too weird not to take them up on it.)

Well, for a measly 4-day weekend:

- One best friend had a baby (yessssss, I love babies)
- One best friend got married (yesssss, they pulled it off in less than three weeks!)
- I visited with friends in two different cities within 24 hours, ate horrendous amounts of delicious, sinful food, drank loads of alcohol and ordered my replacement elliptical with which to atone for the former actions
- Read all of my PERSONALIZED, AUTOGRAPHED copy of Remembering Fireside by Tessa Dick, PKD's widow
- Spent the majority of four entire days in bed with another MeFite... then brought him breakfast in bed. Love goes both ways.

2010, you better be the kick-ass future I imagined all my life and that Arthur C. Clarke wrote about, because the first 4 days have set an unbelievably high precedent!

I think I'll go pop in my box set of Buck Rogers since the first day back at work was so horrifyingly brutal in comparison to my non-stop party vacation.
