In the last half-hour, AskMefi appears to have begun doubling every comment.

Haha, I was just working on this very same post. Hope it's an easy problem to fix because it sure is obnoxious.

Also the server is running at post office slow.

Actually, these comments make me wonder if AskMe is posting a new comment each time the preview button is pressed.

More likely, the person hits 'post comment', the request seems to time out (but the database update is still recorded) and so they hit 'post comment' again thinking the first one timed out.

We have one issue with a weekly database procedure that has been locking up the database the last two Mondays. I just rebooted the sql server box and everything's working fine. Nothing in our code was doubling things up it was just the database server was locked up solid and people were submitting multiple times hoping it would go through only to find out it went through several times.

We'll continue to work on this weekly db lockup issue so it doesn't come up in the future.

Would that weekly database procedure be the infodump generation cronjob?

Naw, it's some dumb internal SQL server maintenance thing that automatically runs, but doesn't release the memory or processor after it is finished.

It's fixed now.

I thought it was Leechblock playing up.

bugger. I thought I'd post "it's fixed now" twice - and the system doesn't let me. Curse you, meta!

Double comment in the Ebert/Cache thread. Timed out, I hit back, 'post' a second time, and two comments popped up.

I think there's still a problem. I just posted an answer in AskMe and got "MetaFilter is over capacity at the moment" error (after a long wait). No double comment though because I checked the thread in a separate tab and can see my answer there.

This thread as well. I flagged the 3 offenders. I was in the middle of trying to post to it as well, but it's not going through...

Yeah, we seem to be having some more horkiness this morning. Workin' on it, keep flagging those doubles.

Doubles in the San Rafael thread. Flagged 'em.

I did exactly what Rhomboid theorized, then flagged my own double. Sorry to make more work for Team Mod.

I got the over capacity error as well.

Workin' on it, keep flagging those doubles. (cortexAdmin)

It's probably just me, but, in my head, I totally heard this as a line from a "Do the Hustle" type disco song.

I thought Mefi was just trying out a comment matching experiment for January.

If you say it twice, maybe they'll actually listen.

Um, not sure if this is from my end or not (though it seems unlikely that it is), but when I click to certain pages (like my profile) instead of being directed to the page, I'm now being directed to a Network Solutions "This Page Is Under Construction - Coming Soon!" placeholder. (I've got a screenshot, if it would be helpful.) Could this perhaps be related to the server business?

Very very unlikely. When you see the NetSol page, what's the URL in the address bar?
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 5:53 PM on January 18, 2010

The url for my user page. (I'm clicking links, not typing in urls.) This has been sporadic, though; it's not happening every time.
