Telling people to fuck off is not very nice.
posted by Blazecock Pileon to Etiquette/Policy at 9:57 PM (75 comments total)

Meatbomb is quoting someone (Jean François Porchez) quoted in the linked article, and telling that person to fuck off. He's not telling a mefite to fuck off. So it's an attack on a viewpoint ("that argument is BS") more than on a person ("fuck off, ortho").

As such it's harmless. Unless we want to argue against the use of the word "fuck" (and I hope we don't), I don't see that Meatbomb is doing anything other than making the kind of forthright comment we all know and love.

Beautiful Screaming Lady: Let us say that Nike shoes are sold exclusively in Nike shops. No-one else is authorised to sell Nike shoes. Adidas shoes are sold exclusively in Adidas shops. No-one else is authorised to sell Adidas shoes. In your town, which is miles from anywhere, there is one Nike shop, one Adidas shop, and one dodgy unmarked place in a back alley that stole a mixed consignment of trainers and sells them super cheap. You own two pairs of shoes. One in Nike, one is Adidas. If I ask you, the end user of the shoes, where you bought them, are you going to tell me you don't know? Are you going to tell me to fuck off?

To be honest, that's exactly what I would say. Unless you had a court order, somehow. Then I'd plead the 5th, cause, really, none of your business.

Sorry to reply to someone who closed his or her account, but this really seems like a pretty simple idea, to me.

Man, what's up with the allusions and references? When I see 'fuck off', I think 'fuck off'. That's just where my mind goes first. Not to, "hmm, maybe I should go read the article and find out what 'fuck off' really means here."

Either way, I wouldn't call it nice.

Y'know, I've been doing some soul-searching regarding this very issue lately, and I've come to the conclusion that niceness is vastly overrated. There is no requirement to be nice in comments here.

You're all my friends. I care about what you think. Your opinion matters to me very much. So if you say something that's ridiculous bullshit, I will say "fuck off" to you - okay? I hope everybody can deal with that. And I wish everybody could see that smiling and nodding and just saying "oh, you believe ridiculous bullshit? Okay, well, I don't mind, go ahead and have your opinion, that's okay with me" is the most obnoxious and least respectful thing you can do to somebody. It may be 'nice,' but it fucking sucks, and it's not a really human, decent way to behave.

I stand by my words, brother. The people who say:

"Be aware of the provenance of every file on your computer - the onus is on you to prove that all appropriate fees have been paid. When we do our random spot checks and find naughty files we will disconnect you and your family, permanently, from the Internet." (summary quotes)

Will get this response from me, when they attempt to look at my stuff or to otherwise stick their officious little noses into my business:

"Fuck off."

I do not see how the comment could be interpreted as anything other than directed at these new French Internet Police... what would you have me say to them, BP? Should I be nice to them while they inspect me and my receipts, to judge whether or not I can be connected to the Internet?

What are you trying to hide Meatbomb ?
posted by Sailormom at 6:01 AM on January 18, 2010

That Meatbomb was responding to the article, and not a user, is basically what makes that comment okay, yes. I'm not super impressed with it, for all that, but I don't get to be super impressed by every comment on metafilter.

Chucking out a string of "fuck off"s into a comment has this flavor of aggro that I think gets people a little concerned even under the very best of conditions that someone is about to lose their shit, so I'm not surprised a few people blinked at the posturing, and Meatbomb could have managed the same sentiment with one or none of those with aplomb if he'd wanted to. I get the impression that saying "fuck off" to an absent third party a bunch of times was part of the motivation, though.

You're all my friends. I care about what you think. Your opinion matters to me very much. So if you say something that's ridiculous bullshit, I will say "fuck off" to you - okay? I hope everybody can deal with that.

I'm sure people can deal with it, but I'm not so sure it's okay, no. It's nuclear-level brusque, to the point that you're pretty much guaranteeing an escalation of badness in any conversation where you decide that the best response to another person here is "fuck off".

And I wish everybody could see that smiling and nodding and just saying "oh, you believe ridiculous bullshit? Okay, well, I don't mind, go ahead and have your opinion, that's okay with me" is the most obnoxious and least respectful thing you can do to somebody.

Condescending dismissal and "fuck off" are two little houses in a whole neighborhood of discursive possibilities. This is not an either/or situation, there are other options that aren't any harder to manage for most people most of the time. But if the only way you can manage to deal with someone whose ideas you dislike is to just shrug and ignore them, fine, at least you're not starting shit. Whereas if the only way you can manage to deal with that someone is to tell them to fuck off in a metafilter thread, you should really just close the tab and do something else for a while.

There is no requirement to be nice in comments here.

There is a requirement to not be an asshole though, so it's great if people can find that line somewhere. Leaving a flat out "fuck you" or "fuck off" comment is pretty much what we think of as noise, so try to be creative, if not kind.

This callout makes no sense. If Meatbomb's "Fuck you" had been directed at Dick Cheney or Fred Phelps it wouldn't have raised an eyebrow, nor should it. By the same token, so long as one's invective is not being aimed at a fellow Mefite, no member should ever be called on the carpet because he or she uses "not very nice" language to make a point. The end.
