Blazecock related iPad overflow January 29, 2010 10:25 AM   Subscribe

Blazecock Pileon's relentless browbeating of anyone who is not a cheerleader for Apple and general bad behaviour whenever Microsoft is mentioned in the iPad thread and others is becoming increasingly tiresome.

We sort of got into a discussion of this inthread, which was rightly deleted, but it's coming up again with other users. It seems better that we take any fights here instead.

I missed the deleted comments, but I'm not sure this post is necessary. As someone who had my say about BP's position in that thread, I think things were going reasonably well. BP was not the only person who was either stridently supporting the iPad, or doing the opposite.

I wish he would cool out a bit because I think his argument suffers when he gets his back up, but I think this MeTa seems a bit punitive.

I generally like BP but I guess I'd say that BP, you don;t have to rebut everyone and you make really disingenuous statements and rhetorical questions instead of just being straightforward. I get where you're coming from (sometimes) but other times it just seems like you're griefing. People are irrational and hypocritical. Why you feel compelled to correct humanity in Apple-related threads is an odd choice and no more likely to succeed than in any other forum.

Also, in fairness, I posted waaaaaaaaay too much in that thread. So if this is the pot lecturing the kettle, so be it.

Sorry, I mispoke there. BP, you sometimes make disingenuous statements. It's a small minority of the comments you make but they seem out of character to me, in so far as I really have no idea anything about you.

I think this MeTa seems a bit punitive.

So that we're clear, Artw called me a "dick", I asked him to stay classy, and he then called someone else a dick, as well, for reasons unspecified. Then Cortex thankfully deleted our comments. That was about the extent of our exchange, to my knowledge.

I'm not sure what else Artw wants to call me, but we're here in Metatalk, I guess?

That whole thread has kind of sucked for needless arguing. Worst of the techie/platform/brand/etc argumentativeness. Nothing insane, but not great metafilter either.

The exchange between BP and Artw that I nixed was dumb, and Artw, you really should not go down the calling-someone-a-prick road in the first place, but both of you are responsible for it going past that first comment being flagged and otherwise ignored, and BP, I'm getting really tired of having to clean up pointless snipe-fests between you and whoever you can't just FIAMO on any given day. You both need to work on that shit.

Beyond that, I'm not sure what we're doing here. Does this need to stay open? Is there something people actually want or need to discuss?

It's not a dichotomy: There's a spectrum between total corporate control of the public sphere, and a public sphere that feels like a Linux app. You can be anti-corporate-control and still not want the dissolution of corporations and the profit motive.

I posted in that thread for a bit and then it just became tiresome to read. I don't mind having a discussion with a user about the usability/viability of a particular feature in a particular operating system, but when it turns out that the user had never even used the operating system and was just talking out of his ass I just gave up.

As far as responding to anything that Blazecock, Artw or Rory Marinich in that thread, that's just a zero sum game laden with frustration and swift keyboard-to-head-plant moments. Why even bother?

Anytime I see ANYONE who is responding to just about anything and browbeating his/her point rather than allowing others who may also share their views to contribute to the discussion, I just mark it in my mind as "oh, they are too invested in Being Right". It's one of the best lessons I've learned here on MetaFilter, actually. Because making sure that you're Being Right is not always the same thing as having a quality discussion, and in a text medium, it's not necessary to repeat one's point, because it hasn't just evaporated into the ether. That realization has also affected my own posting patterns quite a bit, I think.

Jesus christ. He didn't just create the meta about his comments getting deleted. he created it about comments like these:

That would be the only explanation for a comment so laughably ignorant and stuck in the 1980s.
but keep being smug about being ignorant.
Or you can stop whining like a baby and go like something else!
You will have a legitimate right to behave like the smarmy jerk you are when Apple does begin to have and wield that power, though.

now, people were being as rude if not worse to you, true. but two wrongs don't make a right, etc...

on the other hand, ArtW, cortex already mentioned the kind of poor taste involved in calling people dicks in the first place, so this meta is kinda... meh.

seriously, you guys should give some serious consideration to chilling out. and not like "I should give a calmer demeanor and passive aggressively insult the people I disagree with" chilling out. more like "I should stop taking shit so personally in the first place and stop wanting to call people names in the first place" chilling out.

I don't get why people who hate any/all Apple products on spec even bother tramping all over a thread that's by definition all about a new Apple product. Same could be applied to a new MS announcement or a new Linux device or whatever.

I don't go into threads about bands I hate and make fun of them, you know?

Because someone eventually says "you'd have to be an idiot to not want to buy this". And that leads where you would think.

There weren't really Apple haters in there. I suspect everyone who was critical of apple, even when overly so, were people who own ipods/iphones/mac computers. I think there's a point where you sort of degrade into sterner talk than you originally intended because you're faced with a level of denial that frustrates you. so something like "I'm not fond of apple's policy regarding 3rd party apps in the app store" becomes "apple is mussolini-esque in their fascist control of the app delivery pipeline." it's not rational, but it's understandable.

It's like when Scott Roeder equated his murder victim Dr. Tiller with Joseph Stalin, which requires a fairly ridiculous kind of thought process.

Well, you can kind of see where this comes from in the Flash question in AskMe. Lots of ok answers, and then someone says "Since all your previous responses here are drinking the Apple Kool-Aid" and now someone added a response to that. Now, this is AskMe, so the derail will probably be deleted, but all it takes is that little thing to spiral out of control.

For the record, making a comparison between folks who make overblown arguments about consumer electronics design decisions and a guy who murdered someone in church is also less-than-stellar argumentation.

Less-than-stellar argumentation is making an analogy that Steve Jobs had his hand in killing millions of people, which seems an obviously ridiculous analogy to make. But that's just me, I guess.

Not to doubt Flava Flav's horology skills, but wouldn't his clock be easier for him to read if it were the other way up?

So my favouriet response to the iTab so far has to be on the io9 futurology link, where one of the comments basically says "Well if you don't like this tablet why don't you build your own one?"

God, the irony!
We have created, for the first time in all history, a garden of pure ideology. Where each worker may bloom, secure from the pests purveying contradictory thoughts. Our Unification of Thought is more powerful a weapon than any fleet or army on earth. We are one people. With one will, one resolve, one cause. Our enemies shall talk themselves to death and we will bury them with their own confusion. We shall prevail!

It's the nature of the Internet as a medium for conversation. In the real world we can't build discussions like they're physical objects, or come back to an argument days later and pick up at the point where we left off, but on the Internet we can. There's only so much that can be said about any topic, and in a long thread the original subject will eventually become exhausted - but people still want to contribute because they're enjoying themselves, they need to clarify something, they want to be part of this long thready thing on the screen, or whatever, so they take a position on the only thing that's still left to talk about - other people's opinions. And the thread becomes adversarial.

I think any discussion becomes adversarial if it goes on long enough, and in other net communities the time from initial topic to fighting over positions can be really short, especially when the people involved know each well enough to push the right buttons. Imo, Metafilter does pretty darn well in this respect. In the Apple thread there's still new discussion going on well after 1000 posts, which is long after most communities would have taken to bickering, then got tired of the subject and moved on.
posted by Kevin Street at 2:51 PM on January 29, 2010

Just to be clear on this: Artw was upset about my comments in an unrelated thread and was also upset about his comments being deleted from the iPad thread. Despite my having moved on, he decided to start this thread to try to push people's buttons. He is currently upset because this thread did not turn out the way he had hoped.
