Melbourne meetup by the Yarra, with snags and beer. February 26, 2010 5:01 AM   Subscribe

Melbourne meetup by the Yarra, with snags and beer. March 26. Be there.

Sorry, I forgot the name of the place, but Goshling or JohnathonStrange will be along shortly to remind me. There's beer and snags. Also, Ritchie has to come, because I'm going to sell him a video game, as per some prior discussion about how we're all wowsers down here.

So, who's in?

I'm in! (for drinks and BBQ) - and I think you'll find the place on the river is called Riverland!

Calendarised! see you tomorrow!

Riverland

And you bastards know I'm working til 8.30pm. I hate you all.

See you tomorrow. Which is actually now later today. I still hate you.

What are snags? (sorry for butting in my American nose)
posted by desjardins at 5:52 AM on February 26, 2010

Australians eat sunken trees from the river. It gives them plenty of fiber, keeps their waterways safely navigable and they lose less fishing lures.

Is Riverland the one just down from Transport? I may pop by on my way home from work...
posted by prettypretty at 6:47 AM on February 26, 2010

Desjardins: snags are sausages. Riverland do a range of tasty snacky food, including a BBQ with various gourmet sausages.

prettypretty: yes, it's the one right on the river down the stairs from Transport.

Unless Paul Kelly is there, in which case they get wedged under a rock until the fishing is done.

I put my murder victims up in the attic amongst the ceiling batts, and then call Peter Garrett's office for a discreet & hassle-free removal.

unfortunately I am otherwise engaged that evening for drinks with a different collection of internet folks... reckon I'll swing by for a starter or two though...

I'll be there. When my bloated, lifeless corpse floats past just fetch me into shore with a tree branch or something, okay?
posted by Ritchie at 5:50 PM on February 26, 2010

well actually the government spends a bit of time and effort these days resnagging our rivers.

pompoms, remind me closer to the date alright?

And this is how we find out? Last meetup meant nothing to you?

/sigh
odds are good that I will be able to have a drink in the spirit of the thing at the right time. It'll be late Thursday night for me, but I'm willing to make that effort.

Unless Paul Kelly is there ...

to be fair, he did get the idea from an american...

Last meetup meant nothing to you?

well, about the same as all the others... also I've since been informed that the other internet people may not be very interesting so we'll see how it goes...

It'll be late Thursday night for me, ...

sounds like as good a time as any for a drink... :)

Apologies from me, peeps. Sounds like a fantastic plan, but I'm off to Canberra for the weekend that week and will miss it.
posted by tim_in_oz at 11:14 PM on March 1, 2010

Totally missed this until now (I obviously need more time in my life to read metafilter). But I should be able to stop by for a bit. I've always wanted to go to that place.

Oh, and I don't get the apologies to Floridians joke.

well he didn't specify Melbourne, Australia, so folks from Melbourne, Florida might've gotten their hopes up...
posted by russm at 3:51 AM on March 5, 2010

You could avoid that confusion by spelling it Melbun, as opposed to Melborne.
posted by UbuRoivas at 1:26 PM on March 5, 2010

I've always thought Melb'n would work.
posted by pompomtom at 2:06 PM on March 5, 2010

Easier to teach the kids, too. Only, they'd probably end up writing Melbn'.

Hi, yes, I've arrived in Melbourne- and I'm game for snags on the 26th, now that I know what they are. I should be free this friday as well, in case some sort of pre-meetup meetup ends up happening.
posted by emd3737 at 10:35 PM on March 8, 2010

the Workshop on Elizabeth St seems to be the meetup place of choice. shall i suggest approx 6pm?

typically of melbourne, the entrance isn't signposted. you need to walk down the cross street behind the budget bookstore, then into a graffiti-covered nook*, then there's some kind of industrial metal door you go through and up some stairs.

*it's altogether possible that melbournians actually know how to read graffiti tags & murals etc, and to them all their bars are, in fact, clearly signposted.
posted by UbuRoivas at 11:36 PM on March 8, 2010

No, it's not the graffiti. We're just naturally keyed to the pheromone markers in the urine of people who have pissed in the doorway.

Aha, of course. Didn't even compute, even though the gramps used to live in Melbourne FL.

hey, anybody up for an informal meetup in melb this fri evening?

I will really need a drink on Friday afternoon if this week continues the way it's started.
posted by mosessis at 12:10 AM on March 9, 2010

it's actually largely dumb luck... you don't want to know about some of the places I've walked into thinking "I bet there's a bar through this grotty back alley door"...

I bet Ivan Milat wishes he'd thought up that strategy.

Sorry about ditching last minute - some friends of ours decided to up and move to new zealand and I had forgotten last night was their going away.

I did get drunk and talk about techie things, so I was there with you in spirit.
posted by mosessis at 6:08 PM on March 12, 2010

damn, i was there from about 6:15 to 6:45 - didn't see any familiar faces, but asked a few internet-looking groups whether they were friends of matt, but without any luck.

normally, i'm quite comfortable showing up at bars alone for random conversations with strangers, but the workshop is more of a group destination than a pull-up-a-seat-at-the-bar kind of place, so i started to feel like a shag on a rock. [insert joke here]

oh well, next time.

I was on a bus the other day and noticed the icon next to the "no alcohol consumption on public transport" sign was a wine glass and bottle... I didn't realise our public transport riding boozers were so classy!
posted by russm at 12:22 AM on March 16, 2010

I've seen those.

The thing is, the bottle is unmistakeably a red wine bottle, and yet the glass is a white wine glass.

It's not actually against drinking on public transport, but a warning not to be so gauche as to drink wine like an uncultured pig.

posted by wilful at 8:51 PM on March 22, 2010

Why wouldn't it exist? I still have a video game to sell, and I believe there are still snags to be had...

Man, those Jetstar $1 flights are a pain. Have a meetup between November and December on a Tuesday (late night flight) so I can get back to work on Wednesday (early morning flight) and I'm there. I'll drop off those dusty zip disks to you then too, pompomtom.
posted by tellurian at 7:56 AM on March 24, 2010

So that's 2/11, 9/11, 16/11, 23/11, 30/11, 7/12, 14/12, 21/12 or 28/12.

You can pick, but I reckon 28/12 is out.
posted by pompomtom at 10:47 PM on March 24, 2010

I'm still in, and just I resigned from work in order to devote all my time playing pompomtom's video game. I'll give the snags a miss, as I just paid a visit to the orthodontist and I'm sticking to soup until my teeth stop hurting.

Hi all- sorry I was a no-show! I had a work party to go to and then kinda wussed out when I realized I might have to go table to table at a busy bar asking people if they were my friends from the internet. But I will make it to the next meetup, I swear.
