Why no health care summit on front page? February 25, 2010 7:50 PM   Subscribe

This question might not be one for MetaTalk, but why was nothing on the health care summit a FPP?

The other instance of Obama and the Republicans going at it was, but this one had much bigger stakes. It was a long affair so I came over here to see if someone highlighted the big points. I post sporadically but would like to pick it up a bit, I assumed most big events make it to the FPP, right? Curious what other sorta big cultural or political events never got to the front also if someone was ready to opine on that.

AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! I am the last person to get pedantic and upset about these things, but for GOD'S SAKE, MeTa is not the place for 'why isn't this a post??' If you think it's important, make a fucking post about it.

That said, please don't make a post about it. I think we're all weary of talking about it. The only thing that would come of it would be a lot of people trying to out-agree each other, and one or two whackos shitting all over the thread, which would probably cause it to end up on MeTa, and we could all enjoy a 200+ comment thread about how fucked up that one guy's opinions are, etc. etc. etc. Maybe someone would temporarily flame-out. The thread would end with some funny jokes and a conversation about cupcakes and fashion week, which would almost make the whole thing worth it but not really.

Here's the deal: Metafilter is a community blog. The front page is populated with content that members post. There is no editorial board that decides what should be posted and commands it to be so. The only bad thing is that you may craft an great post, and somebody else may post 1st. So what? It'll make an awesome comment. On Jan. 20 last year, there was no Obama Inauguration post. So I posted about the new whitehouse.gov going live, because I really wanted there to be a post.

People can be harsh if they don't love your post, but don't let it get to you. Craft the best post you can, and go for it.

Well the interesting thing about the Summit is that Obama has finally done something smart to get healthcare passed.

It was a pretty masterful piece of political theater. He went out there and "tried to compromise" with the GOP. He made his surprised face when he found they weren't willing to compromise. Now the Dems can go ahead and do what they gotta do via reconciliation, and say "well we tried to be bipartisan first."

The best part is, if they keep playing their cards right, they can come off as "the humble party that tried to play nice," rather than "the arrogant dicks who rammed it through with their big scary 60 vote super-majority."

They're going to lose some seats in the mid-term no matter what, but this is going to help limit damage and get something passed, even if it's not perfect.

It only took 65 years to figure out that state-sponsored collusion in insurance is maybe not so good for everyone!

That Sunlight foundation livestream would've definitely been the way to go on an FPP. It was really pretty cool what with all the live metrics and factoids on campaign finances depending on who was speaking. The twitter stream was mostly BS though....

And if there had been real time commentary here, there was much much that could've been expanded upon and lampoon.

So next Obama vs the GOP event FPP here.

Note to self.

Also Koselitz the new profile pic is EPIC.

I was awoken by a woodpecker this morning and my first thought was what an aptly named animal.

It's not a word! It's a sound effect!

I once had that experience with the word 'fork.'
