Do you hear that Doug? I'm coming to London! April 9, 2010 5:14 AM   Subscribe

Londoners: I'm coming to town for a few days... fancy a meetup?

I'm in town from the 11th to the 14th of May... then off to Oxford for a couple of weeks. Anyone want to meetup while I'm in the hood? I'll be staying in Kensington, but don't mind trying to find my way around to somewhere. You can pick a place... I'm pretty easy!

Woo-hoo! My vote is for school-night shenanigans on the 12th or 13th.

I'll be in San Francisco that week! Have fun!

That just happens to be the busiest week of my life ever. Fortunately, my life has never been that busy, so I could do the 11th, or maybe the 13th. I'll bring the Marmite cereal bars.
posted by MrMustard at 7:06 AM on April 9, 2010

It's a bit of a busy week for me, but a meetup is an excellent idea and I will do my best to join in.

I'm not far from London. I like things like wine, cheese and aeroplanes.

Yes. West London meetups ftw!

Yay! Exciting! Where do you want to meet up? Got any favourite pubs? Or fancy a bite to eat first? Whaddayathink?
posted by jonathanstrange at 9:04 PM on April 10, 2010

I'm up for this, regardless of date.
posted by armoured-ant at 4:20 AM on April 12, 2010

I'll come along if relative n00bs are welcome.

Well, I've been here ages but don't post all that much. Semi-lurker, maybe, but who wants to meet someone whose hobbies include "lurking"?
posted by metaBugs at 6:32 AM on April 12, 2010

Better a lurker than a n00b! Of course you're welcome.

Okay, how's this for a plan: The Windsor Castle, on Thursday 13th April. (See, I want MrMustard to be there so we can try these Marmite atrocities.)

Any raucous agreement, complaints or better suggestions?

OF MAY. 13TH OF MAY.
posted by chrismear at 7:15 AM on April 13, 2010

I see. Organise the meetup without me. See if I care, chrismear. SEE IF I CARE.

(by the way, 13th may @ the windsor castle suits me!)
posted by jonathanstrange at 7:17 AM on April 13, 2010

Raucous YES! to Thursday 13 May over here...
posted by HandfulOfDust at 12:02 PM on April 13, 2010

Sounds like a plan. If it's sunny and the Windsor Castle is mobbed, we can take over Holland Park.
posted by matthewr at 12:53 PM on April 13, 2010

I heartily endorse this event or product.

is this the same Windsor Castle that also serves Thai food? The owner was rude as fuck to me and turtlegirl when we visited in 2007. Oh well, I can't make it anyway ;)
posted by terrapin at 6:25 AM on April 14, 2010

When are you in Oxford? And for how long? Maybe there could be some kind of Oxford mini-meetup. I think there are a couple of us kicking around. (though I'll be out of town for the 2nd half of May, so you know...)

Tentative affirmative...

I'm in.

Does this mean I have to attend? With marmite based snackage? I'll do my best.
posted by MrMustard at 8:58 AM on April 16, 2010

I'm in Oxford on and off from the 14th through to the 29th. My sister lives on Banbury Rd, so I'll be close to town, and am definitely up for a mini-meetup there. I'm also unleashing myself on the Manchester community with chrismear - we'll be in Manchester on the 19th and 20th of May. Meetup there too! I'm basically going to meet every English mefite I can, since I felt guilty about not saying hi last time I was over.

So excited.

I should be able to make this. Should've made the last London meet but didn't, so will try extra hard this time.

I can't make this, sorry. I really wanted to meet jonathanstrange too :-(

Btw, I can endorse the Windsor Castle. It has great atmosphere and good food and beer.

Should be able to make it. Did we set a time?
posted by Infinite Jest at 5:15 AM on April 26, 2010

Windsor Castle is a good pub, and handily close to my office so I should be able to pop in for a few.
posted by garius at 10:18 AM on April 26, 2010

Sounds good, I'll try and make it : )

Count me in for that one.

Sounds good (same boat as you metabugs!) - would love to come but would depend on what time you were all thinking as I'm stuck with after work only :(
posted by smudge at 7:26 AM on May 1, 2010

smudge: We usually kick these things off at 6pm-ish, if memory serves.

So let's kick this one off at 6pm. On Wednesday 13 May. At The Windsor Castle.

Oh no stop hang on – you mean Thursday, don't you? Thursday 13 May at 6pm, Windsor Castle...
posted by HandfulOfDust at 5:39 AM on May 4, 2010

Yes, I mean Thursday. Wow I am bad at this.
posted by chrismear at 12:32 PM on May 4, 2010

You're unlikely to disappear before 8ish are you? Only I won't be able to get into town until about then.
posted by MrMustard at 1:00 AM on May 5, 2010

I should think we'll be there until we get chucked out.
posted by chrismear at 3:49 AM on May 5, 2010

That'll be about 5 minutes after I show up.

Sign me up for an Oxford meetup!
posted by pharm at 3:06 AM on May 8, 2010

Now that the meet-up in London is sorted, can we figure something out for Oxford? I would suggest this weekend (the 14, 15, or 16th). I may not be the best one to choose a venue, because I tend only ever end up at the Three Goats.

It's a bit of a week, but if I have a chance I'll drop in and wave my newbie badge...

Specklet and I will be at the London meetup. Huzzah!
posted by TheDonF at 8:07 AM on May 12, 2010 [1 favorite]

I'll be there for the start, I suspect (assuming I get out of work on time).

For the record, I'm wearing a black Johnny Cash t-shirt today and still stubbonly refusing to shave off the moustache/goatee combo that the Missus insists makes me look like "a bi-curious muskateer." So if anyone sees me wandering around looking lost, give me a nudge.

Hi, just saw this - longtime lurker/newbie to posting here. I'll try to stop by if work allows.

I realised I double booked myself tonight - slight confusion over days of the week!! - so can't make tonight but will try for the next one. Enjoy.

I'm here! Look for the tim tams. There are too many to be a coincidence.

I'm also wearing a blue dress with a white tshirt underneath.

I'm sitting out the back.

Excellent meetup - nice venue, great company. JonathanStrange is awesome, although she did try to poison me, to the great amusement of Mr Mustard.
posted by essexjan at 12:20 AM on May 14, 2010

The attempted poisoning was the highlight of a night which was also memorable for the wing dings corrupt file suggestion and being told I looked like Nick Clegg. Oh, and meeting various mefi celebrities, obviously.

Mr. Mustard, I apologise for saying you looked like Nick Clegg. But you do. Also, the cricket is on Sunday at 15:30. I guess weekend passes are tricky?
