Better info on the new post error page? April 12, 2010 7:55 AM   Subscribe

Why can't the new post page actually tell you when you can make a post again if you're trying to make a new post too soon? Like -- "Try again in 7 hours" or something like that?

Couldn't you just look at the time-stamp on your last post and do the math yourself?

Why can't the new post page actually tell you when you're being lazy?
posted by gman at 8:08 AM on April 12, 2010

Our feeling is that no one needs needs needs to make a post on the dot; for the folks who are enthusiastic enough about posting promptly that they need to know when, it's not hard to click through to their own profile and do a little bit of arithmetic.

"Nope, not yet" is sufficient for what that page is supposed to do, which is to say "you need to wait some yet".

That's not to say it like bad to be curious about when you can post, just that it's not something we really want to encourage people to be clockwatchers about.

But AskMe tells you how much time you have until you can ask another question.
posted by alligatorman at 8:16 AM on April 12, 2010 [1 favorite]

Eh. Which I think is kind of silly, but you have to wait a week on AskMe so "number of days" for the truly forgetful might be a more useful benchmark than "number of hours" for the blue, setting aside the utility issue of askme vs. the posting-something-cool nature of the blue. But, yeah, I think it's a little silly in any case, personally.

Does this Greasemonkey script still work? I'm Chroming it today, and I don't have the time to check.

I always find it funny when it happens to me because the message also says you may have to wait because you're too new of a member. So each time that happens, for an ever so brief moment I think I've been demoted back to new member status. That all the posts I believed I made were from when I lurked and waited, thinking about posting something. It is kind of harrowing if only for a second or two. Like spending the night at your parents house and waking up with that feeling that it's too light out so you must have missed the bus for school and you'd better hurry up and find a ride or you'll be in major trouble.

not to mention discovering something really cool and inspirational right after you make a dorky fpp

I nearly posted a tongue-in-cheek MeTa last week alerting y'all that the server's clock was 37 seconds slow. So I guess I'm doing it wrong, eh?

Oh shit! This is awesome! The science fiction of the past has a way of breaking into our present in the most wonderful ways. Sam Todo is so goddamn cool!
posted by Kattullus at 9:43 AM on April 12, 2010

Or if you find some awesome photographs of SCIENCE. which is probably a double anyway.

That whole blog is awesome and probably deserves an fpp - farmer invents biogas converter! , Kenyan bike modification!, homemade helicopter from Somaliland!

I prefer a crosswalk-styled gizmo (perhaps with Blade Runner audibles) to encourage orderly posting (whether you want to or not).

DON'T POST. DON'T POST. DON'T POST. POST. POST. POST. POST.

Think_Long - Afrigadget has been an FPP but if Sam Todo's work is any inspiration (heh, particularly in the race threads ;p) then someone, please FPP it, won't you?

[Housebroken FPP needs a good home]

Seconding an FPP for AfriGadget, and maybe some more on this Togolese robot-wrangler. Infini, set your countdown timer!

Sounds like the kid's serious about making a robot, not just an electronic automaton - when he talked about greeting people I was like "cute, but not a robot", but calculating distances and avoiding obstacles ... MIT needs to give this dude a scholarship before the École Centrale Paris scoops him up.

I want a huge fullscreen countdown.

Also, yes, for some reason just after I've posted something dumb seems to be when I find all the good stuff too. It is the way of the world...

thankfully everything I post is dumb so I never have ...Posters Remorse.

awshucks

awright awright - i'll see what I can do on Sam Todo with the full spectrum of links but imho, instead of Afrigadget per se (previously), i'll focus on REculture (can't use that link)

Yeah, that blog is sweet. Somebody needs to get on that.

What does the "you can't post right now" page say now?
Seems like it should at least say "On Mefi you have to wait 24 h from your last post" or whatever the relevant rule is for the subsite. (But maybe it does say this currently in which case, /emilylitella.)

Sorry

You cannot post to the front page at this time. This can be due to one of several things. You may not have been a member long enough (1 week), you may not have posted enough comments (at least 3), or you may have already posted a link in the past 24 hours.

If you are asking a question, try Ask MetaFilter's posting page instead

Please see the About page for more information on posting rights. If you feel this was in error, try logging out and back in. If you absolutely must post another link within 24 hrs, email me the post for approval.
