Help me find this old AskMetafilter thread April 14, 2010 9:02 AM Subscribe
There was an AskMetafilter thread sometime ago from a company wanting to fire their crazy IT guy, but they were afraid he installed back doors and other nefarious things and didn't know how to proceed. There was some good advice in the thread, but I can't seem to find it.
If I remember the poster was in Portland or Seattle or some northeast city. There was some really specific advice (including what firms to contact), but the main thrust was that they should assume their entire system is compromised and go from there.
It was a really good example of what not to do for a small business owner that doesn't have a lot of technical expertise. I've been googling for over an hour, but can't seem to find it. I may have even commented in the thread but googling over my name hasn't helped.
Some other details: the firing was going to take place, I think, on a Monday and they had a weekend to prepare. The IT guy was also a no-show and had been working from home for some time.

Ah, BOFH! Of course. That's it, thanks! (Also, I guess Portland is in the northwest now).

It would be interesting to get an update on that situation, in case the OP is reading this.

I just emailed the throwaway Gmail account mentioned in the post. We'll have to wait and see if there's a response.

Until I checked the date, I wondered if it was a disguised question about this situation in San Francisco.
