Denver/Boulder meetup.

I'll be back in town between June 9th and 15th for a meeting and would love to see the front range contingent again. After the 9th would be best.

Ha! I was just about to send up the meetup signal myself! I'll be spending the summer in this neck o' the woods and would love to meet some of you fine folks. Sadly, I can't suggest a venue, but let's make this thing work!

Good idea.

Very tentatively in as long as it's not on the 13th.

I missed you last time, brujita, so I hope I can make it! I'll be out of town through June 11, and no doubt jet-lagged when I return, so as late as possible in your timeframe would be best for me.

I'm probable unless it's the 9th, 10th, or 12th. Unless the U2 concert gets postponed due to Bono back surgery, then the 12th will be in play.

12th and 13th are the best for me, but I'm not quite sure I'll be in town that weekend, yet. If so, though, I'm probable.

I'll be out of town the 12th and probably not back until the evening of the 13th... just to test the waters, how do you all feel about weeknight meetups (i.e., the 14th and 15th)?
posted by McBearclaw at 3:01 PM on May 23, 2010

My leisurely freelancer/grad student lifestyle means that weeknight drinking is A-OK, so I'd be okay with the 14th or the 15th (assuming I am in town)...
posted by heurtebise at 3:43 PM on May 23, 2010

Weeknights are better for me; weekends usually mean racing, which isn't compatible with anything else. So, put me down as a vote for the 14th.
posted by hackwolf at 5:30 PM on May 23, 2010

The 9th is completely out for me, and I leave the 15th. Where do the locals like to go in Boulder? I liked the place at the last meetup, but I like variety too.
posted by brujita at 8:22 PM on May 23, 2010

For Boulder meetups, I have always had decent luck with the Southern Sun brewpub, although please feel free to disabuse me of this notion. It happens to be extremely handy for the Denver transit-friendly contingent as it's right on the main bus line from downtown, as well as being on the south (read: easily accessible) end of Boulder.

The downsides to the SoSun are that it's often very, very busy and hard to seat a large group quickly as they are a waitlist only establishment, also they are one of those weird Boulder local holdouts who don't take credit / debit cards in any form. Cash only, sadly.

The upside is that hey, school (CU) is out now, so it's less likely to be completely, utterly slammed. And if I know in advance who/how many are coming, I can and will gladly go there early and stake out a table.

Also: they have an amazing patio. And even more amazing array of beer(s) on tap, plus a full menu of non-disgusting food.

also also: SoSun is literally a 30 second drunken bike ride or a five minute drunken stumble from Chez lfr. Meaning my wonderfully geeky partner in crime is easily talked into joining us. And if we all pull together, we too can wean him from Reddit!

Looks good, lfr!

6-14 at 6/ 6:30. It'll be great to see you all( and meet those I missed last time)again!

all right, it looks as though we have consensus:

Southern Sun Brew Pub
627 South Broadway, Boulder, CO

Transit info: B westbound, dropoff at Table Mesa/Broadway stop (it's "between" the station listings on that route schedule; ask the driver, it's pretty obvious where the stop is though). Walk from bus stop on NE corner of intersection to SW corner of intersection, go south along Broadway about 1/2 block and up the stairs to the brewpub.

Meetup starting at 6, I will get there early to try to nail down a table.

Please let me know if you plan on coming so that I can at least get a ballpark estimate of how many will attend. I will monitor this thread, you can memail me, or harrass me via gmail or phone, no big deal.

please feel free to call or (preferably) text me for more info, details, directions, or just the OMGLATE / OMGLOST!!! kind of thing: 720.891.0824

lurkers and/or fieldtrip - would you kindly memail / email The List and/or send up smoke signals to the rest of the Denver cognoscenti, kthxs?

I will probably need some drinks after that weekend, so I'll be there.

Would love to pop along but after a hiatus of work travel it looks like I need to travel that day. Another meet-up missed--very frustrating. If plans change I shall endeavour to make it and may even bring Mrs NailsTheCat and the new NailsTheKitten.

Just maybe I can plan a day at the Boulder Lab for 3D Electron Microscopy of cells on June 14, and then meet y'all for drinks. I'll see what I can do.

Darn it all. I shall keep my fingers crossed do move my trip to mid week. Wanna see you guys and catch up and I still haven't made a Boulder meetup yet.

Yes fieldtrip, I'm as amazed as you. I know pretty much zip about biology but somehow we have a lady baby, kitten... what have you.

Yo you mefites, no one's mentioned my work trip and I shan't be mentioning it to anyone so looks like I may be able to make it. I think I'll be driving up so if anyone needs a lift from the Denver area I can likely oblige.

Anyone heard from -t, peachfuzz or any of the other irregulars?

(Actually, what are the public transport options out of curiosity? I saw a bus on Colorado Blvd today that seemed to think it was going to Boulder. I can always use the interwebs to find out of course...)

Yay Nails! Has NailsTheKitten joined MeFi yet?

Nails!!!! <3>
Yes, there are plenty of busses that go to Boulder... the ones you want are of the B/BX variety however. That one runs a direct line from Market St. Station / Union Station and will drop you off directly in front of the pub in question.

I believe the regional bus that runs on Colorado is of limited service only during peak hours. I vaguely recall taking it once or twice to get to Denver for jobs. I think it doesn't go up to Broadway but rather runs on 28th St., which in South Boulder is fairly distant, so I'm not sure it would work well. Can't for the life of me recall what the letters of it are tho... H something?

Here's the transit website for you: www.rtd-denver.com

I'm so excited!!!!
posted by lonefrontranger at 9:46 AM on June 9, 2010

It doesn't look like I'm going to be able to make it, since I now have a big deadline on Tuesday morning, which seems incompatible with bus ride + beer + fun, unfortunately. :(
posted by heurtebise at 10:56 PM on June 9, 2010

The Colorado Boulevard - Boulder bus is called the DD, I think. Although I can't be bothered to look it up, easy as it would be.
posted by koeselitz at 11:49 PM on June 9, 2010

Yeah, it's the DD. And lfr's right – it only runs six times a day, so you'd really have to nail it to catch that one. Although it apparently does go up the standard Broadway route to Walnut street, so there's that.
posted by koeselitz at 11:52 PM on June 9, 2010

(So you could hop out of the DD bus right in front of the pub, is what I mean.)
posted by koeselitz at 11:53 PM on June 9, 2010

I'll try to make it....dunno, it depends on how work goes, were rolling out a bunch of changes on the databases and it may all be chaos.
posted by Confess, Fletch at 5:52 AM on June 10, 2010

Thanks for all the travel info guys. Much appreciated. Hmm... I think I'll end up driving anyway. Not sure I can endure such a long trip both ways. I'll maybe try the bus another time--when I have a bit more free time.
posted by NailsTheCat at 4:10 PM on June 10, 2010

Nails - I'll take you up on that ride you are offering if you aren't planning on closing the SoSun.
posted by fieldtrip at 1:12 PM on June 13, 2010

I can probably make it! Might be fairly late so I'll probably drop a text to lonefrontranger when I'm on my way to make sure y'all are still where I think you'll be.

Looks like my previously-unseen-by-MeFi wife & son are going to come with me, unless we have a blizzard. Hope to see y'all soon!

As a near constant regional Denver - Boulder bus rider, most of them only operate during peak hours, say 6a-10a and then 2:30p to 6:30p. The exception is the B which essentially runs from 5:30a-midnight. Usually if one wants to go out drinking in Boulder and has to go back to Denver, then the B is what you'll be taking home.

I find it's typically easiest to use the trip calculator on the rtd site when taking an unfamiliar route. If you put in when you expect to travel, they do a really good job of lining up transfers and making everything super simple. It helps that the buses are also very punctual so it makes the planning bit easier too. Also, when it's late at night a lot of the lines run on limited routes, so if you don't use the trip planner you may be surprised when you're stranded several miles from where you'd thought you'd be dropped off at (this has happened to me).

lfr checking in! I'll be in place at the SoSun hopefully around or shortly after 5PM.

anyone got a rough guesstimate as to headcount? If not, I shall go as planned, put in for a table for 8 and just wing it. Our "traditional" table seems to be the one that's halfway down, sort of in the alcove perpendicular to the east windows with the long benches. If I can snag it, I will, as there's decent room to add chairs.

As soon as I get there I will update this thread with my/the group's interior location information as it evolves. Have iPhone, will update, &etc.

Again please feel free to text if you have questions, need directions, or whatever; I shall be checking frequently. Actual phone calls may or may not be answered promptly due to interior noise levels, etc.

Last but not least: for everyone attending, this is a reminder to BRING CASH as the SoSun is a cash only operation, and they won't split group cheques so the tab will likely be run in my name.

For convenience, there is the World's Slowest ATM in the back of the bar (it's slower than a rheumatic glacier, but doesn't have an egregiously extortionary withdrawal fee) or there is also a much zippier credit union ATM outside in the lower level shopping plaza.

Cheers!

P.S. mr. lfr is indeed coming, but shall be late (8.30ish) as he's going on a bike ride after work.

scrutiny, if you get this obviously I shall be late, like maybe 6ish-6.30ish. Could you do us the kind favour of grabbing a table if one's available? xoxoxo -- lfr

Oh hai Colorado peeps! Sorry we missed this one, -t was picking me up from the airport just as you all were probably getting into the swing of things.

This summer is going to be work-related nuts for us, but I am totally into making the long-fabled Fort Fun meet up happen - possibly in September, when things have cooled down a bit, literally and figuratively?
