Sometime before hurricane season would be nice... May 25, 2010 3:23 PM   Subscribe

Houston MeFites, we need to have a meetup to celebrate the arrival of summer. (Because if it gets any hotter - and you know it will - I will stop leaving the house altogether and you wont see me until October.)

We could go to the Kemah Boardwalk and ride rollercoasters, or we could go to Lucky Strike and go bowling, or we could go to House of Pies and gorge ourselves on tasty pastries... or we could do something else entirely. I just suggest we do it sometime between now and June 21st at which point summer will have arrived.

So let's get throwing some ideas out there.

Pies! I like House of Pies. I'm not opposed to other things though. I would like to finally make it to a Metafilter meetup.

Oh Neofelis I hope you do. It's such a nice approachable and fun group of people. Count me (Kate) and Robot Rex (Will) in. I kinda like the Kemah idea.

If it's after June 6, I'm in!

COFFINS!

Sweet, sweet coffins.
posted by zinfandel at 5:25 PM on May 25, 2010

Yay! I missed the last one when I was out of town, so I plan to make this one. It'll be my first MeFi meetup and my first visit to House of Pies ever. I'm in the UK for a Christening weekend of the 6th but after that should be good.
posted by arcticseal at 6:26 PM on May 25, 2010

Okay. The masses have spoken and they demand pie! It also sounds like they demand a meeting some time after June 6, which is totally doable.

Now let's talk day of the week before we talk dates. And let's talk time of day. Do we want this to be an evening meetup? Another afternoon meetup? A Saturday meetup? A Sunday meetup? Let's hear opinions on this. We had a pretty darn good turnout for the last one on a Saturday afternoon. (And some of us kept the party going well into the night by heading over to Empire for cookies, cake and coffee!) Shall we try for a Saturday afternoon in June?

Last time I went to Houston, it cost me nearly a thousand dollars at Ikea. Which is pretty much an entire living room.
posted by ColdChef at 7:20 PM on May 25, 2010

I vote for a Saturday afternoon/evening, as I'm a wage slave who has to wake up at 4 a.m. on weekdays. And I, too, would like to finally make it to a meetup.

P.S. Coldchef, IKEA is having a huge sale for Memorial Day. It starts on the 27th, I believe, and they're promising 1/2 off their already low "As-Is" section prices, plus lots of other stuff on sale.

Saturday afternoon (after four o'clock) would work well for the Neofelis household.

greekphilosophy: “(Because if it gets any hotter - and you know it will - I will stop leaving the house altogether and you wont see me until October.)”

I'm in Denver, so there's really no chance of me coming or anything, but: it snowed here two weeks ago.

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Great, koeselitz. Now you're my arch nemesis. My attacks are powered by jealousy.

What's 'snowed?' What is this weather you speak of.
posted by dog food sugar at 9:19 PM on May 25, 2010

Aww, koeselitz, it's so sweet of you to try to make us Texans feel better about our weather. I was in Denver and got snowed on at the end of March -- I felt lucky to get back home after that, but I hadn't even considered snow in May as an option! Evviva il calore!
posted by katemonster at 9:19 PM on May 25, 2010

But hey-- Texas has a dry heat. Nothing like the humid weather we have here in New Jersey.

*ducks*

Heh. I'm a native Houstonian, and that line never ceases to make me laugh. I might be in town visiting family in June and if I am, count me in.

I'd just like to point out that House of Pies isn't terribly conducive to group sitting because all they have are booths. If that's a concern.
posted by 2or3whiskeysodas at 6:24 AM on May 26, 2010

I think you're right 2or3whiskeysodas - House of Pies isn't a great option. Let's compromise with Dessert Gallery two blocks down. They play videos of cakes being iced which are downright pornographic. But more importantly, they have a more open seating format.

Any objections?

Sounds relatively positive for a Saturday afternoon/evening. Any strong opinions between the 12th or the 19th?
posted by greekphilosophy at 7:41 AM on May 26, 2010

They play videos of cakes being iced which are downright pornographic. But more importantly...

This is incorrect. There isn't anything more important than cake videos.

Well, except for cake eating.

Since there's a meetup thread, I'm going to hijack it momentarily:

I'll be in Houston on the 16th to see the Carolina Chocolate Drops at the Mucky Duck, and since this thread is here, I'd love to say hi to any Mefites who are going to be at the show. Look for the woman with purple streaks in her hair and the tall blond Viking dude in preppy clothes. Hope to see some of you there!

(also, House of Pies, nom nom nom.)
posted by immlass at 7:59 AM on May 26, 2010

greekphilosophy: I'm partial to the 12th but either date works. Whatever the majority decides is fine with me.
posted by Gridlock Joe at 8:23 AM on May 26, 2010

I can't do the 12th, but the 19th looks clear.
posted by *s at 8:39 AM on May 26, 2010

19th is best for me as I'm out of town all but 4 weeks this summer and that's one of them.

Also, I might just be at the Chocolate Drops show. Mmm. Cakes and Chocolate Drops.
posted by Brittanie at 10:04 AM on May 26, 2010

19th I might could do.
posted by jjray at 10:32 AM on May 26, 2010

That's three votes for the 19th. I'm going to go ahead and call it. Hope to see as many of you there as can make it! PIE!

I can almost see it from my house! Count me in, I should be able to escape for a couple of hours since my folks are in town.
posted by arcticseal at 1:34 PM on May 26, 2010

Ooh, that works perfectly! I apologize in advance for showing up directly after work, without showering. I might be kind of stinky. But pleasant!
posted by Neofelis at 2:00 PM on May 26, 2010

The 19th works great for me, as I'm taking that entire week beforehand off (6/16 is a bad one-year anniversary coming up).
posted by mrbill at 2:00 PM on May 26, 2010

Can't make the 19th - working. I'll keep an eye out if the date changes.

Re the 16th: maybe we could have a smaller House of Pies meet up before the show. I'm off that day.
posted by dog food sugar at 3:36 PM on May 26, 2010

How funny ... my daughter works at House of Pies on Kirby. God willing and the creek don't rise I'll try to make it to the meetup.

The only bummer is that since we're not going to House of Pies, I can't embarrass myself by telling you all about how I memorized 50 digits of pi in high school as one of the two members of the Pi Club. Seriously.

greekphilosophy you know among this group that only makes you cuter. Seriously. The Pi Club.

Will try to make it...have some (unpleasant) craziness planned earlier that day, but will do my best.

We'll be in Galveston, driving slowly down greekphilosopy's street over and over again. And peeking in his windows. And asking his barista how he likes to drink his coffee. And maybe getting his mom's autograph.

Okay not really. But we *will* be in Galveston. Y'all have fun!
posted by pomegranate at 7:29 AM on June 8, 2010

No, you *really* should. They've carved one of the old oaks on the street that died into a huge sculpture of seabirds taking flight. Cranes, roseate spoonbills, herons, gulls, etc. It is really awesome. Check it out, just East of the intersection of 17th and Sealy.

There are a couple other sculptures through the East End that are worth checking out too. Dolphins at 10th and Sealy. A creepy geisha and angels creeping out of the front lawn at 17th and Ball. The Tin Woodman at 17th and Winnie. And there is also a great sand hill crane between 13-14th on Ball. And if you haven't seen the hydrant and the dalmatian by the fire station on 25th and Sealy, that's worth checking out too. There's also a creepy creepy mermaid who is holding a shell that looks like a baseball glove at 16th-ish and Church (or is it Postoffice? or Market?). My favorite is tiny and not great for a driving tour, but it is a little toady that was carved from a dead tree on the south side of the 1600 block of Ball.

The trees are really kind of awesome in terms of public art with an important tie to the city's history. I love them. If any other mefites are interested in coming down to Galveston some time, maybe later in the year, I'm happy to conduct wandering tours of the East End hitting all the publicly visible post-hurricane tree sculptures!

Have just been informed that I have no excuse to not see the Chocolate Drops and will probably never be forgiven if I miss them. So it looks like I'm in for Mcgonigel's and House of Pies!
posted by casarkos at 6:03 PM on June 13, 2010

Duck people, look for the chick with the purple frosted hair and the giant Viking with blond hair. I'm told if you don't have tickets already, the show is SRO. We got tickets back in April, so we'll be sitting down.

Our ETA is scheduled for not long before the show since we're driving down from Austin that afternoon, so House of Pies would be best afterwards for us. We'd try for beforehand but Mr. immlass needs to stay at work as late as he can, no thanks to a root canal gone bad last week that resulted in a lot of time out of the office.

Pub trivia you say? Pub trivia is my patrimony.

It was really lovely to meet everyone. My husband told me to apologize for getting sort of unsocial toward the end--he started to feel Unwell and went to bed pretty directly once we got home.

Y'all were very pleasant. I've added some of you on the Twitter.
