Another Birmingham Baseball Meet-Up May 27, 2010 3:24 PM   Subscribe

Short notice meet-up in Birmingham, Alabama...

I was planning on going to the Rickwood Classic baseball game between the Birmingham Barons and the Tennessee Smokies on June 2, 2010 and a couple of other Birmingham Mefites have indicated an interest in attending... so I figured "Why not call it a meet-up and post it to Metatalk?"

Its a great excuse to play hooky from work/obligations since this is the 100th Anniversary of Rickwood Field (the entire city shut down for the first game in 1910) - America's Oldest BallparkĀ®.

The game starts at 12:30 and there should be a capacity crowd (around 7,000) of people from all over the world and lots of special guests...

Wanna have lunch at Niki's West first? Say, 11? I can't get that close to their nanner puddin' and not have some.

Ah, Rickwood Field. Saw Bobbie Gentry do "Ode To Billy Joe" there, at the Alabama State Fair, many moons ago. Or, was that legion Field? Anyway, it was Field.

Wish I could join y'all.

nanner puddin'

Contains more than traces of Vanilla Wafers, I'm presuming.

BOP, make sure you mark the date right on yer calendar

*sigh*

I'm never gonna live that down, am I? Oh well. I deserve it.

And besides, now I got me one a them e-leck-tronic calendar doodads on my Jesus phone.

And Wednesday is the only day of the week that starts with a "w", thus minimizing my potential confusion.

Niki's West is a delicious idea* - and eleven o'clock will be just in time to beat the onslaught of the lunch crowd by several minutes.

Also - I went ahead and ordered my tickets to the game here to save some hassle on game day by picking up the tickets at Will Call (and on the offside chance that the game could sell out).

There is going to be a special tribute to Negro Leagues and the Black Barons at this year's game - should be a great event and will have something of interest for everyone in Birmingham (even those that are not partial to baseball).

*I'm partial to the Greek style baked chicken and the wafting smell of a steam table full of fresh vegetables seasoned with generous amounts of pork fat.

So 11 at Niki's. Cool. I hafta drive right by the Met (er, "Regions Park", or whatever they're calling it now) today anyway, so I'll pop in and buy tix for me & E. And I'll call wearyaswater and see if she wants to play hooky.
