GenCon Meetup?

I don't know how many of ya'll are as pathetic as I am, but my wife and I go to GenCon as sort of an annual palate cleanser, the kind of place where you can nudge someone and go, "Man, he rolled a 1 on that Dex check" and receive a smile and nod in return.

Who wants to hang out and play some board games or summat? There's the open gaming room and any number of hotel options, and I know I, for one, will be bringing about a half-dozen games (Pandemic, Smallworld, Apples to Apples, Puerto Rico, Illuminati, etc.) and my own cadre of friends will have more. Plus, there's the trying out of new purchases...

(And I, at least, may or may not be dragooned into running a test session of the Dresden Files RPG, with the caveat that I'm still not 100% solid on the magic rules.)

Dates and times and specific locations would all need hashing out. I'm more available Thursday night, Saturday evening and night, and Sunday night-ish.

It's probably worth mentioning the location (Indianapolis) and dates (Aug. 5-8), especially in case some of the other Indy-area MeFites might be interested. (I would except I'll be out of town then. Have fun!)

Hey! I'll be at Gen Con, as will my wife, who is also a MeFite. I have crap scheduled throughout the con, but I don't mind blowing stuff off, so I'm up for pretty much any time before Sunday. I'd be up for some sort of game, but I'd also be down to just get a beer somewhere, too (since it's not like there's any shortage of gaming). That might also make it more accessible, as DA suggests, to Indy-area members who aren't attending the con.

Also, do you play INWO? My wife is running a couple of games; one is all sold out, the other is wide open, if you are interested.

Ha - I'd been going to ask this closer to the con. Right at the moment, I think I'm running two games and will be winging the rest of the con.

Heh - I know the folks who'll be selling the Dresden Files books.

The Ram is a good place to hang, but it tends to be packed for the entirety of the con. Alcatraz Brewing Company in the mall is ok for gatherings too. I have a link to a GenCon Reataurant Google Map for other ideas.

The convention is only two weeks away....

Scotty's Brewhouse is apparently going to be fairly gamer friendly. This may or may not be a good thing, as that means they're going to be friendly to large groups... but also pretty crowded. There's also the Rathskeller, which is farther away from most of the hotels. Again, this may or may not be a good thing, but they've got beer, sausages, and live music from Wednesday to Saturday.

If there's one general time for Meeting Up, my vote would be for Wednesday night. I could understand if that would be less than optimal for locals who have jobs to go to in the morning, though.

I'll be there with my husband and a group of our friends. I think my schedule is pretty open - not sure what everyone else has planned - but I would love to meet up for some drinks. We'll be there Thursday afternoon through Sunday morning.

I'll probably be there at some point, but don't have a schedule planned and I'm unlikely to be staying up there. Can pretty much do any time, though.

I'll be there. Have some games & seminars planned out and paid for, but lots of free time as well. I might be up for a meet up.

Wednesday night would leave me out, but if other people wanna meet up after my suggestion, I sincerely have no qualms and wish everyone the best.

Ya'll feel free to drop by one of my games, though; might even be a slot open. (I'm the only guy who runs Nobilis, but sometimes even that game's scary-dedicated fanbase pulls a disappearing act on me.)

I'm reluctant to suggest this since the OP says it's no good for him, but Wednesday night does seem like a pretty good time, just since few people are likely to be busy with games and such.

Go for it; my wife and I will try to stop by at some point in the evening, but I don't want to be the one making decisions in the IRL section if I'm not going to be more than tangentially involved...

Does anyone want to exchange cell #'s or twitter feeds, etc, for organization onsite?
posted by Karmakaze at 10:27 AM on July 28, 2010

Sounds like a plan. The exchanging of numbers, that is. I know that Scattercat and I will be available during the days, and probably quite eager to get in some board gaming outside of the convention center itself.

FWIW:

For those of you who can't make the MetaFilter meet-up on Wednesday night, there's an RPG.net meetup Saturday night. It's at Embassy Suites, room Coronation I, starting at 6pm and lasting until as late as folks are still around. The event has been added to the Gen Con Catalog as ENT1016303.

Well, my twitter feed should be obvious ;) If anyone wants my cell #, memail me.

So... where Wednesday night?

Scattercat and I will be hanging out in the Embassy lobby, which also happens to have a bar. Unless there are better suggestions...

I'm checked in at the Omni... I'll wander by the suites later.
