Best of the Web: Stupid Videos? September 17, 2010 11:54 PM   Subscribe

5x SYLT (32x SYLT): Has Metafilter.com simply become a Youtube/Othertube Internet video bookmarker?

The last many hours of Metafilter:

Marvel characters as cats (stupid videos)

Barenaked Ladies (stupid videos)

Warren Zevon (eighteen stupid videos)

Baby monkey riding on a pig (stupid video)

OK, I get that stupid videos are part of the Word Wide Web. Why can't this be a spinoff category (stupidsylt.metafilter.com) to segregate the disappointment for the rest of us for everything else?

posted by gum at 12:06 AM on September 18, 2010

gum, I see that you have not made a front page post. Perhaps you would like to contribute to that page in a way that does not include links to YouTube videos? Please note that I'm not trying to be a bitch here; I myself haven't contributed to the front page, either. But if you're so concerned with the stupidity level of MeFi, shouldn't you try to find and link non-stupid things instead of just complaining about the stuff you don't like?

I mean, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, YouTube, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, YouTube, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, YouTube, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, YouTube, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, YouTube, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, YouTube, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, YouTube, stupid, repeat as necessary.

This is a fairly interesting Internet Website, except for all of the stupid SLYT crap. Can't it simply be cut out? Or is there some awards ceremony where Metafilter is competing with Reddit, Yelp, Fark, and stupid.com?

gum: “Marvel characters as cats (stupid videos)”

Your clichéd callout would have more teeth if you'd actually looked at the links you're calling out. That's not a video link at all. It's a link to a blog filled with images of Marvel characters as cats. Where are these 'stupid videos' you're upset about?

I know you've been here four days longer than I have, but you should notice that the mods have pretty strict standards of quality here, and they cleave to those standards nicely, I think. If you'd like, you can peruse the deleted threads blog and count all the posts that get deleted because 'meh, this isn't much, just a stupid video.' Happens several times most days, actually.

The upshot is: if it feels to you as if the videos that end up staying on the front page aren't worth posts, either they just don't suit your taste, or... perhaps you're not actually clicking the links to see if you'll like them. Perhaps you're just assuming they're stupid videos.

Okay, maybe I need to read the post better before responding.

You think Warren fucking Zevon is stupid?

Good god. This is hopeless.

Look, we've given it a go here, gum. We've tried. We really have. You kept coming here and clicking; we kept sharing stuff we thought was neat. It would be one thing if you thought our dumb jokes were stupid, but that Warren Zevon post was well-thought and lovingly crafted, so hearing you say it's stupid just hurts. If you think all the things we like are stupid, maybe it's time for us to face the possibility that we just don't have very much in common. You know, it's possible for people to care very much about each other and yet just not be compatible in the end. There have been some swell times, and it'd be hard to let you go, but I think we both know that you'll just be happier if you go out into the wide world and find another web site to cherish and hold close on those cold October nights that are just around the corner.

Okay, let's be clear on this, gum: what the fuck is wrong with Warren Zevon? And what the fuck was wrong with that post – which, I'll point out to you (since even reading the posts seems to be too much trouble) is not principally about Warren Zevon? Seriously, there are no metrics by which that wasn't a good post. And if you thought it wasn't a good post, I can only surmise two things: (a) you don't know three shits about music; and (b) you don't like the internet.

Seriously, man. I challenge you to watch this and not enjoy the crap out of it. It's awesome. It's quality stuff, it's a good link, and it was presented in context with information about the performance and the situation in which was performed. Sincerely, even if it was crappy music, what more could you hope for in a good post? And since it happens to be awesome music... what are you complaining about, anyway?

In this Metatalk thread there is some discussion of a client-side script to filter out single-link youtube posts, but the links to it are dead. Google turned up a reference to a greasemonkey script for it at wcitymike's tumblr but that link is dead as well. I tried just going to userscripts.org/tags/metafilter to browse for it as suggested in the FAQ, but for some reason even that is down for me.

This issue did not bother me whatsoever until I started trying to help you but now I'm really angry about it.

gum: “And I don't understand why "Here are my favorite promotional YouTube videos for my favorite musician" qualify as "Best of the Web" rather than "Get Your Own Blog" drops? What's the double standard here?”

What are "Get Your Own Blog" drops? Are they like "gum" drops?

Anyhow, seriously, gum: I know you feel like crap's slipping through the cracks, but honestly I think you're not seeing this clearly. The Metafilter mods are extremely involved with how the site works, they're careful with how they moderate it, and they delete crappy video posts all the time. It's not like 'oh wait, we could delete video posts if we want!' is an idea that hasn't occurred to them.

Since you're in the minority on this, gum, and since the mods disagree with you on it (at least they've indicated that they do by not deleting the 'stupid' stuff you're annoyed by, and they've dealt with this question before on metatalk) I think you're just going to have to accept that maybe you don't like stuff that other people might like. That's okay.

I'm picturing gum reading Metafilter while perched upon a bright, shining, pristine cloud, floating high above the lowly interwebs. Then someone posts a YouTube video, and -- oh noes! -- all of a sudden, withered fingers stained with rancid Cheetos dust clench around gum's computer, dragging the entirety of Metafilter down, down, DOWN into the abyss.

Sorry, but I can't really see where your outrage is coming from, gum. If you don't like the YouTube-related posts, don't click on them. There are lots of topics like I don't like on Metafilter, but I don't let them drag me down, I just skip them.

Metafilter is a diverse mix of posts. You're not going to love every post, and if this is something that really, honestly bothers you, then there's no solution for you. Some people will love things, some people won't.

What's more, people aren't one-dimensional . If you're typically interested in archaic aspects of social justice, you can still laugh at, say, a monkey riding a pig.

And I think you're incorrectly characterizing all YouTube videos as being lower quality, when that's just not true. Video is very much a part of the Internet, and this site really does act as a good filter for the really great ones. Look at the youtube tag: sure, some of the links might not be "best of the web" (I'm not a fan of the koran burning parody), but there's some great posts that consist mostly of YouTube links.

Plus, you know, I'm pretty sure filthy light thief's posts make up for any shortcomings in quality this site has.

There's people here who bemoan every Lady GaGa post, probably I'd be one of them except that I think she's just so much goddamn fun that my hair moves around, or something, just from seeing her latest hair or hat or shoes or video, etc and etc; she gets me to smiling, I get just the biggest kick out of her cool vibe, all of it an inside joke somehow -- what fun! I'd never have come across her if not for finding her here on this site -- I'm one of these no TV people, no lame-o magazines, I live through an internet connection and much of my time on that internet connection is on this site. And I trust -- mostly -- the strength of this community, and while there are plenty of things here that don't blow my skirt up, there are way *more* things here that *do* blow my skirt up. It's a fair trade, seems to me.

And maybe there could be a place for video postings on this site. (www.MetaVid.metafilter.com) Except that a lot of video postings do in fact tell the whole story, or maybe a vid posted with just the barest sketch of commentary to set the thread moving on its way. I don't know, and I don't need to know, there are plenty of people better qualified than I to make those types of judgments, implement changes if they're deemed fit. Myself, I mostly sortof wanna enjoy what's here, without getting my shorts in a twirl, and mostly I'm able to do so. Your call, but might be you'd like to give that a try here for a couple days or more, see if it's a good fit for you...

I'm seeing four single link YouTube posts on the front page: Barenaked Ladies; Monkey Riding a Pig; Making Puppets with Jim Henson, and Dinner with Henry Miller.

Of those, if you aren't into Barenaked Ladies or silly pet tricks, you might consider them stupid. I don't, but whatever. The others are merely of interest to you or not. That's two stupid SLYT in two or three days. Scanning back quickly, it looks like the last SLYT before these was on September 14. Also not stupid.

The Marvel characters as cats wasn't a video. The Warren Zevon wasn't a single link post, and wasn't about Warren Zevon -- it was a multi-link post of YouTube links of a documentary about (then) young up and coming musicians. Some posts have included video links along with other links, like Niagra Falls... slowly I turned. One multi-link post was a TV special that can now be found in parts on YouTube.

For me, personally, I can take or leave Barenaked Ladies, but you'll pry my piggyriding monkey from my cold, dead, Stupid-Single-Yink-LouTube-Post-clicking fingers. About once every four days or so.

gum: you're not alone. i've thought about making this post myself, but ... well, you can see how it's received. i agree with you, though, and wish either that there were some more stringent guidelines on slyts or that they somehow be ... confined. like youtube tuesdays, or something. (aside: is that how flash fridays evolved?) some of these are like shooting fish in a barrel for either the 'awwwwww' factor or the 'RAWK!' sentiment. there never seems to be any more justification than 'well, I like it.' but best of the web? sure, if viral = excellence then i agree.

and yeah ... the 'well why don't YOU post something better if you don't like it?' argument is sort of puerile. not that there isn't some kind of logic attached, but we all know it's easier said than done.

and finally: BABY MONKEY RIDING BACKWARD ON A PIG! viral or not, i like that one. but wouldn't it have been done much better as a post if it had been a link in a parry gripp post?

i've thought about making this post myself, but ... well, you can see how it's received.

Yeah, I'm kind of surprised you didn't see this coming, unfortunate as is it is.

Anyway, I myself have no objection to single-link posts or SLYT posts in particular. If it's an interesting link, it's an interesting link, and sometimes one link is enough, and sometimes it happens to be a video. It would suck if that's all anybody ever posted, though frankly I'd take SLYTFilter over BreakingNewsOutrageFilter any day of the week.

I do wish more people would flag the weak-sauce links, though. I really don't understand the reluctance people have to flagging stuff that's lame. It's not like there's a flag theshold that automatically results in deletion or banning, and it's not like flagging is a malicious tool that can really be abused around here. It's mods-eyes-only, and they decide every deletion on a case-by-case basis. If more people flagged stuff that they thought was Not For MetaFilter, then the mods would be more likely to see it and go "Wow, people really don't like this" instead of "Meh, not great but not deleteworthy either."
posted by Gator at 6:03 AM on September 18, 2010

Quoting from the gtuidelines:

A good post to MetaFilter is something that meets the following criteria: most people haven't seen it before, there is something interesting about the content on the page, and it might warrant discussion from others.

There is no policy banning links to videos.

I agree that the Barenaked Ladies post is weak. An old documentary that some of us might think is interesting now available on YouTube? That's exactly what MetaFilter is for.

The mods do delete weak posts. If you think something is weak or otherwise violates the guidelines, flag it. If the mods agree with you, they'll delete it.

[ ] I miss all the recipes that used to be posted in MetaTalk

Man, it's so true. I miss them terribly! I understand the reasoning for not having them so much but, well... could we have recipefilter AND stupidvideofilter AND sexysinglesfilter? Oh, and while we're at it, a subsite entirely devoted to arguing about whether other people's arguments are good or bad. Wait, no, we've got that. But the recipes. Their absence is like a hole in my cholesterol-laden heart.

Since YT tends to cause my computer to lock up and show me the perpetual spinning color death wheel, here's what I do when confronted with YT links: I do not open them. Perhaps I'm missing out on something really worthwhile/funny/inspiring/sad/whatever. Perhaps I'm not missing anything.

Point is, it's up to me. AND I also understand that since there is more than one person here on Metafilter besides me, that there will be different opinions of what is worthwhile/funny/inspiring/sad/whatever.

Variety makes the world a worthwhile/funny...etc. place. Just embrace it, man.

Silly stuff has always been part of the mix here. Silly videos have been a part of the mix for as long as it's been possible to host video online. (The big difference between today and 2001 is we're no longer having a side discussion in every other video post about just how many suckholes, exactly, Real Player sucks, etc. Due credit to Youtube and Vimeo et al on that front.)

So, no, there's not a problem with videos being a part of the mix of posts. Variety is arguably job one—sprawling essay posts nestled in with monkeys on pigs, serious political discussions sharing space with tenacious musical debates, art and science and philosophy and slapstick all jumbled together in the weird and varied waterfall of text that is the front page.

If you do not like some of that content, skip by it. There is always more. If you feel a specific post is problematic, flag it so that we know you feel that way.

gum, vague-but-insistent late-night metatalk posts pretty much never go anywhere useful. If you want to come back to this and give it another shot this morning with maybe some more detail and pragmatism, I'm happy to try and talk about it some, but this really feels more like you venting on a Friday night than it does like an attempt to have any sort of serious policy discussion.

Oh it's all so tedious. Don't click on things you don't like. Don't think about things other people are doing that you don't like. Denial is your friend. Deny that they exist by sensible interpretation of post titles and if you get fooled, the back arrow is your friend! You don't even have to read the comments if you'd rather not, because undoubtedly they'd be full of people laughing at stupid shit and og knows, who needs more of that?

Seriously, it's so easy to avoid stuff that bothers you, and if the fact that reading people express their enjoyment of what you classify as 'stupid shit' grates you so much, back away from the thread.

Dip judiciously from the well would be my advice.

Gum, I'm sorry my monkey-riding-a-pig post got you so riled up last night after you'd had a few adult beverages.

On the other hand, a monkey riding a pig! Awesome! And the song-- so catchy!

In conclusion, here's my suggestion:

If, in the cold, sober, hungover light of Saturday morning, when you read through your multiple comments and your 37 uses of the word "stupid," you start to feel a little foolish about your Friday night MeTa binge, just go ahead and watch this. You'll smile, and maybe feel a little less foolish, and hopefully a little less crabby, too.

I don't mind the single-link YouTube posts. What I hate is all the "SLYT" cluttering the front page, which is is probably mystifying to many people, and seems like an apology to me, like you know it's something many people aren't going to like and you're posting it anyway. Worse are the outright apologies, such as the current "Yes, it's SLYT, but it's a really good SLYT, so I beg forgiveness."

My opinion is that if you feel like you have to apologize for a post, you shouldn't make it. It's like saying "no offense" before saying something offensive. If, after contemplation, you're convinced you should still post your baby monkey video or whatever it is, just do so proudly and without reserve.

I've learned from MetaFilter that if one finds oneself screaming at a large and ill-defined group of people that they are all educated stupid, it may be worthwhile for one to check the functioning status of one's own timecube, as it may no longer be operating in all relevant dimensions.

It's very odd to me that people who don't like things want to subsume their own agency to some authority they think is in charge. It's nearly as odd that people show up in threads and declare that they don't want to read the six pages of article that the post links to, but someone please summarize the entire thing so that they can take part in the conversation. Neither type of person is willing to take responsibility for their reaction to an FPP, they just want to be spoon-fed the bits they think they like. Why would anyone willingly want to give the impression of helplessness? I struggle with understanding this point of view.

The Jim Henson post was a thing of beauty. It would not have been better in text form, or with supporting links. That moving image spoke for itself.

Metafilter hasn't jumped the shark (shark)
Snark (snark)

Snark, (snark) what you flag is in the queue
Snark, (snark) which the mods might one day review
Snark, (snark) and decide what's now taboo

Snark, "Nein! You're all swine!" is just his line
The links are grime, it drives him to, slime

Could it be the best, could it be?
Really be, really, babe?
Could it be, my babe, could it, babe?
Could it, babe? Could it, babe?

Is it any wonder you flagged it first?
Snark, snark, snark, snark
Is it any wonder you are too cool for school

Snark, bully for you, chilly for me
Got to name and shame (shame)

Gum

I can understand your frustration, I am on a slow connection and dont tolerate youtube well, but anymore it seems to be a nice way to swing people hip to things that arent available elsewhere.

Agreed,, I sort of roll my eyes at the latest cute animal doing something cute stuff, but if I do a YT intensive post, I at least try to make it worthwhile to the 1 or 100 folks who will look at a link or two, decide if it is there cup of tea, and engage or not.

Here's one example of something I got busy with the YT on. Way off base for mych of the younger audience, much less international members, but something that is at least representative, offers some choices as to how deep you want to wade. It;s all there if you want it, and one click away of you don't.

That said, I just posted a SLYT to the blue I hope makes you smile, you will pass on, etc.

This is too great a community to get your shorts in a knot.
