Time To Give Gifts to the Children! November 18, 2010 10:00 AM   Subscribe

The time has come to give gifts for the Metafilter Cares Holiday Gift Drive! Please step right in to find out how you can help...

As we did last year, we're fulfilling requests from the NYCares Winter Wishes program. We are providing gifts for 23 children and 2 adults. The letters, as always, are darling and heartbreaking (the one that really got me was the 11-year old girl who said, "My winter wish is to get a new pair of converse shoes, size 6, because I wear the same shoes every day.")

I have posted the requests from the letters on this Amazon wish list. I included some items not available on Amazon through their "Universal Wish List" feature. If you see something on the wish list you'd rather purchase elsewhere or a different product for a request (not sure I picked the best remote control car, for example), that's perfectly fine; just let me know so I can update the list.

Gifts purchased are being shipped to spec80 (thank you!). I'm hoping we can schedule delivery from her place to the organizations for Saturday, December 11; I'll update on this as we go.

If you are interested in donating money via Paypal (e-mail in profile), it will be used toward purchasing gifts accessories like batteries, wrapping paper, gas for the delivery vehicle, fulfilling leftover requests, etc.

Thank you for your generosity!

Know what I want to buy that little girl? Two pairs of Converse shoes. In different colors. I'm definitely in, for shoes or something else. Thanks for putting this together!

I am in for the accessories. Wouldn't know what was the best remote control car either.

TPS, I have access to an immense amount of nice unused coats. Is there a way that you could post the sizes here and I could possibly mail them to spec80?
posted by k8t at 10:07 AM on November 18, 2010

The adult requests asked for size medium coat for a man and size medium coat for a woman. I was hoping someone might have access to a good coat stash; the requests asked for Old Navy coats, but I was really hoping to do better than that and provide something that would be really warm and long-lasting. Thank you :)

Doh! Here they are:

“Black, size M, for 39-yo R from the C family who requested a jacket.”
“Black, size M, for 38-yo M from the R family who requested a jacket.”

One male and one female?

Lemme work on this today - can you please "hide" them on the wishlist until I get back to you?

And with this one:

“For Y, a 11-year old female, who said, "I want a north face sweater. Black, size Adults: Medium, for Christmas."”

Do you think that it would be a bad move to get a different (but similar) brand or is that not okay?
posted by k8t at 10:10 AM on November 18, 2010

I have hid the adult coats on the wishlist. Thank you for working on it :D

For the girl who wanted the North Face sweater, I would prefer to give her exactly what she requested because I'm still bitter about the stuff I didn't get for Christmas years ago when I was OMG SO SPECIFIC MOM.

Liketiitanic - I'd assume size 6 women's.

Maybe we should also get a 6.5 and a 7? At that age my feet grew like woah...

What's the procedure for including an additional gift? For example, E from C family wants a Lego car. It costs only 5 bucks and includes few bricks. What would one do to also send E some other Lego kits?

Wow, 64 items purchased already, awesome Hehe, you'll see that includes a lot of items from last year, too.

I think you can put it in your cart and have it sent to the same address as the wish list item? If that doesn't work, you can drop me a line and I'll add the items to the wish list for you. It's definitely welcome! I want these kids to have the best holidays ever. When I created the list, I included one gift per child, but if we burn the first round quick enough, I'll add additional items as we go.

re: American Girls Doll

My impression is that there is a big American Girls store in NYC, is that correct?

If so, I'd be willing to give a gift certificate to that store so she can get her doll + some of the (really expensive) "stuff" -- but I want to be sure this would work for this program/the family in question.

TPS, you can Mefi Mail me if that's easier.

Converse run HUGE (or at least they used to). Women's size 6 may look like clown shoes on a kid; I'm a 6 in regular shoes, 4.5 in Converse. Before you buy you might want swing by a brick & mortar athletic shoe store to see the sizes in person and talk to a salesperson.

It looks like perhaps someone else was ordering some items at exactly the same time I was, so for things that you only wanted one of, there now seem to be 2 ordered. (20-pack cars (2 wanted, 3 ordered) and Thomas Train Set (1 wanted 2 ordered)

Should I go in and cancel mine? I think I still can....

If you want to cancel, sure. If you don't, I can distribute the extras among the other kids. Either way, your call!

Yeah, TPS, give the trike to a family with a kid age 2 or 3. That trike, along with most trikes, "expires" at age 5. But I saw it at the store and wouldn't get it for my 2 year old, cuz it looked like he'd outgrow it in a minute.

- I'd go with this bike or this bike with training wheels first - for greater longevity.

- But if you really want to stick with a trike, this looks a little better in terms of size (but still 'expires' at age 5.)

And let's get a helmet too! (My kid has this one and it is the cheapest.)
posted by k8t at 11:46 AM on November 18, 2010

I'm a 6 in regular shoes, 4.5 in Converse.

That's the differential between women's and men's sizes, actually.

In Converse, I wear a 9 1/2 women's and 8 men's, depending on the style. I certainly don't wear an 8 women's. Maybe you're forgetting that you bought a style that was sized in men's sizes?

I'm going to buy that baseball glove, but the kid clearly needs a bat and a ball to go with it. While I'm cool on the ball, what size bat would the average 9 year old use? Louisville's start at 26 inches for youth.

A kid's size 6 is teeny. The four-year-olds I know wear kids 11s and 12s. They must be adult sizes for the Converse.

if anyone in new orleans wants to do something locally, you can contact the noaids task force. you can send an email to holidaywishesnatf@gmail.com and indicate Holiday Wishes in the subject line, or you can call the office @ 504-821-2601, extension 292, and talk to mark. i have a family of 6; 4 kids under the age of 5. last year all the mother asked for were clothes & underwear for the kids, and underwear for herself. it damn near broke my heart. at least this year she also asked for a toy for each of the older 3 children, and a blanket for the baby.

congratulations to everyone who does what he or she can to help those less fortunate, and may the universe smile on those who desperately want to help, but fall closer to the 'need help' than 'can help' category.

I like how TPS has begun adding the gifts she'd like for Christmas to our NYCares Wish list.

Haaaa, gman, beat me to explaining some of the more expensive list items. I'm adding the 2nd round of gifts, and some of the kids had requested a 2nd, more expensive item. Seeing as how I have yet to even come close to hitting the ceiling in my understanding of the depth of Mefi generosity, I've decided not to censor any of the 2nd round requests for price limitations. We'll see what happens. If nobody buys the more expensive items, we'll figure something else out for those kids.

Also, mlle valentine, I think we bought something for the same kid. I think that somehow makes us related!
posted by zizzle at 7:58 PM on November 18, 2010

Also, I can't promise that I won't buy something for some other kids. I mean, I'm trying, but I just can't, so if I post an AskMe about spending too much on Christmas gifts, you'll know why.

I asked if they needed anything beyond the gifts requested, and he demurred. We have a few kids at another organization, so I'm waiting to see if they have any needs.

Also, anyone have a large car we could use to deliver gifts on Saturday, 12/11? Please drop me a line!

I asked if they needed anything beyond the gifts requested, and he demurred.

I'm honestly shocked.

On the front page of their website are the following two links:

"Purchase a $25 gift card for a local domestic violence shelter. These gift cards will allow each parent the opportunity to buy their child exactly what they want for the holidays."
Link for Gift Cards (Target)

"purchase a gift for a NYC shelter that is providing victims of domestic violence, child abuse, human trafficking, rape and sexual assault, as well as homeless youth and families of homicide victims, with a wide range of comprehensive support. With your help, they can also provide them with a toy this holiday season."
Link for NYC Shelter Gifts (Toys 'r' Us)

I feel like the users here could polish off the bulk of that Toys 'r' Us link in pretty short order. Maybe just add a little gift card that reads "with love from Metafilter?" Not as cool as the big pile of presents at spec80's, but does just as much good.

TPS, you're terrific!! I wish I could help as much as you are!
