Flickr flickr little star, where art thou? November 24, 2010 11:11 PM   Subscribe

Why in the world will my Flickr profile not link up?

I've never gotten it to work and I can't see what's holding things up. I shouldn't have any age related profile restrictions. My profile and pictures are public. I changed my display name to NathanielRobertson just to make sure the previous space between words wasn't throwing things off. I temporarily changed it to something else and MetaFilter couldn't connect to that either.

Related, this thread from 2007.

Anyone know what gives?

Username and Flickrid are not sometimes the same thing. So the url of my Flickr account is /photos/diamondjoe, so it seems natural to assume diamondjoe is my Flickrid. It ain't though, it's something far more verbose and irritating.

Did I just split an infinitive there? I am sorry.

Go to flickr. See the top right where it says signed in as? Just cut and paste that name as is. It should work. If not we can drunk dial pb.*

No, you didn't. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Yeah, checking to see what Flickr has next to "signed in as..." and using that is your best bet. We have a little more info in the FAQ.

Jofus, you said "to assume." That's an infinitive, not a split infinitive. Also, I think you'd be interested in the book Style by Joseph M. Williams, which explains on pg. 11 why split infinitives aren't wrong.

I'm gonna start a highbrow all-you-can-eat ice cream shop and call it Banana Split Infinitive.

I'm gonna start one across the street called To Infinitely Split Bananas.

I'm gonna start a restaurant near both of those that's going to be the splittin' infinitimage of both of them.

Tried my ID in my profile, no joy. I think I've tried it before, anyway.

Yeah, I tried that name (NathanielRobertson). No luck. Call pb.

Oh, and FYI, my profile does seem to be able to pull in Flickr—just not mine. I put in jkottke temporarily and it worked.

Make sure your Flickr privacy settings allow for searches on flickr and 3rd party sites. This is what was causing problems for me.

Can you send me a link to your Flickr profile? Or post it here?

The definitive Split Banana does already exist.

Further to MediaMer's comment.

On the main page, click the You dropdown and choose Your Account

Click the "Privacy and Permissions" tab.

Make sure that the "Hide your stuff from public searches" and "Hide your profile from public searches" settings are set to No.

Update: finally working. I've had some correspondence with Flickr. It turns out that Flickr still registered me as under 18 (I registered my account before I was 18), thus blocking connections to my profile despite my settings.

I see a new checkbox has appeared under Your Account / Hiding from search: "Hide me from site-wide searches on flickr.com and on 3rd party sites that use the API?", which is unchecked. Also, "Hide your stuff from public searches" on the general Privacy tab now says "No". It said yes before, with no explanation on the settings page.

Woot.
