In a new world record, I've already received my Secret Quonsar gift, 10 minutes after the final draw.

In the oddest twist of fate, my husband drew me as his quonsee and had the perfect $15 gift already.

Thankfully, I didn't know the person I drew.

So, thanks Secret Quonsar, even in your lack of secretness.

Hmm, I thought you were going to say you got a Kindle book, or an e-gift certificate.

That is great!

Grouse, if you mean the . at the end of someone's name you drew, it's a placeholder for folks who needed to put something into the second name field to be able to register. People also used dashes and exclamation points, etc.

I am highly amused by my giftee. The internet gods are weird.

I'm very excited about the person I drew.

Every time I hear/read somebody say something like this, I imagine the recipient's gonna get a nice watercolor set, and a little note that says NEVER GIVE UP. Then she breaks up with Lee and kisses Tim.

Crap. I bought a teapot with a tiny note inside.

Fark, fark, farkiddy fark. So NOW I find out that I had to join a group on Elfster? My username wasn't automatically hooked up with Mefi? I didn't understand and fucked it up.

Damn. Shit. Oh well. If anyone wants me, I'll be in my trailer.

And I still hate dolphin-themed homewares. NOT THAT IT MATTERS NOW.

"Fark, fark, farkiddy fark."

It seems this may be the first use of this phrase on the internet. I give it my full approval.

OH! I got someone who's name I actually recognised and am very excited to go stalk them!

(I have phenomenally poor name recognition on Mefi. On the plus side, every post you make is a Brand New Day with me...)

Wait... how do I do that? How do you find a member's profile by username, without their member number?

Dear God, I fail at #mefi

Thanks! Hey did you know you can also put ColdChef into the search box, and there's a Users tab in the results?
posted by DarlingBri at 4:28 AM on November 27, 2010

malibustacey, did you not get signed up then? If not, would you like an less-than-super-sekrit quonsar?

I didn't sign up because I can be terribly flaky, but I have an idea for a (hopefully!) pretty sweet wee gift for you that I can order online (reducing my flakiness factor by whoah). It will be sent from the U.S., so might possibly be a bit late, but will probably arrive during the floating 12DoQ (12 Days of Quonsar) period the temporal parameters of which are a sacred mystery determined by certain Pantfish Oracle determinations. :) I also have some collateral digital sub-gifties in mind, so let me know!

Dearest giftee,
You may have been smoking a spliff
But your profile pic is terrif!
Tis the season for cranky and tired
But now I'm more than inspired
And look forward to choosing your gif(t)!

I participated in the very first Secret Quonsar, but not any of the ones that came after (until now), and I'm so glad that people are making use of the "wish list" functions on their Elfster profiles. Like a good elf, I hunted through my giftee's user history and found a lot of esoteric interests that I had absolutely no expertise in. So I bought them fuzzy socks.

Which I might do again this year, but in my defense, they ARE asking for socks...

Ooh, ooh! I apparently have crossed paths on MeFi with my giftee before... After looking at their posts/questions, I am rubbing my hands with delight at the prospect of getting a gift for this lucky person. Bwa ha ha!

Dear sekrit quonsar giftee, please fill out your ElfSter profile a little so I don't have to get you something that you wanted on AskMe three years ago.

It's kind of fun to commentstalk my giftee, which may result in lopsided gifting, but the randomness of Seekrit Q is part of the fun.

I suspect he had it waiting for me -- because he's been plotting to dig into the history of his quonsee. However, since he asked what size MetaFilter t-shirt I took a few weeks ago, I don't think I'm out of presents yet. (We never lack for presents.)

malibustacey9999: "Fark, fark, farkiddy fark"

You're on the wrong site. We don't do squirrel testicles here.

For the first time in my personal SQ history, I'm having the gifts shipped to me and assembling it into one package, rather than shipping it straight from the internet to its recipient. Yay me!

Yes please, and also in case you're a relatively new member and don't have much of a posting history to be stalked.

Otherwise, you're getting a sputum culture. DON'T LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT, YOU SAID ANYTHING WOULD BE FINE.

I don't read the sidebar on the front page. I used to, but it seemed like all the stuff that got sidebarred was overly wordy personal recollections of dubious relevance to the original post. It started to seem more noise than signal, so I ignore it.

It's like that time I was driving from LA to San Diego in a nuclear-powered Winnebago. I should have known better when I went to pick it up and the lead shielding took up most of the sleeping compartment. But I was young and focused on my goal of picking up several boxes of '70's era X-men comics from a friend of a friend.

[story redacted]

When I finally walked away from that Winnebago, I walked fast and I didn't look back. But I knew one thing - I would never look at Hell's Angels or marshmallow fluff in quite the same way again.

My giftee says I need to read all of his/her posts to know what to get him/her, and only put his/her ZIP code in the address field.

The temptation to make a gift to a literacy foundation in his/her name is almost unbearable.

Fill out your Elfster profiles, please!

I'm kinda scared what my match is going to get me, after my most recent comment in the TSA thread... (I kid, I kid!)

I just so happened to be at an indie craft show yesterday when I found out my match, and am stupid-excited about the fun thing I got for them...

Er... maybe I should have read the rules, but what exactly *do* you do if your quonsee has no address, no wishes (or antiwishes), and doesn't use their mefi name so you can't stalk?
posted by ke rose ne at 12:33 AM on December 1, 2010

If you are getting no or only partial info from your pick, I'll be glad to follow up for you. Generally, anyone can mail me, tell me who their pick is, what info they need, and I'll follow up for you. (I can look it up, but it's quicker if I can just go).

Please note quonsaring folks: if you don't provide an address and ignore memails or email sent to the address you registered with, you won't get a gift!

Also note: the person who picked you may be using Elfster to ask anonymous questions. This is to help them narrow in on a good gift for you. Check your email for Elfster mail, or log into Elfster and look in the left margin - If there's a number next to "requests", there are some questions to answer. Please do!

What if we love sekrit quonsar so much that we want to do it again, right away?
posted by cior at 2:13 PM on December 1, 2010

I am so glad that the picks got randomized again.

My first pick didn't have anything in their profile! No wishes.. and their Metaprofile didn't tell me anything other then that she was a girl. T_T I was distraught. A girl.. okay.. What kind of girl? Girly girl? Punky girl? Geeky girl? Weird combination of everything girl? They seemed like a heavy lurker with only one askme relationship filter and a handful of favorites.

Then the sun shined down and the picks got redone! Yay~ My new giftee was totally transparent about what she wanted.. so I rushed out and bought them right away! It's making their way to her doorstep soon~

*apologizes to and sympathizes with the person who got her first pick.*
