How do you credit a link you found elsewhere? March 27, 2002 11:34 AM Subscribe
What is the current approach to credit the source of a link?
I've posted a link today and credited the place where I actually found the link, in this case a personal weblog. Inside the thread, someone mentioned that it could be credited to Reuters and I was puzzled by that.
So, when I come across an interesting link and decide to post it, should I credit the place where I found it or should I credit the original source? I didn't want to raise this question in the original thread to avoid sidetracking...

I think they're just picking on you. My take is: if you feel that crediting is necessary, give appreciation to the site from which you found the article. The rest of it, trying to find the original author or site, is just silly.

I read it as the farkster discrediting the topic and the reuters validating the topic as worthy. How you credit is up to you in my opinion.

I got the fark joke.
The Reuters mention just got me wondering if, since my credit was a bit obscure (a weblog in portuguese), I should have searched for an easyer one.
Since Adam was kind enough to mention it, I thought I might as well check this issue here.
Thanks for the input.

Rexgregbr - Thanks for crediting rtfm. Otherwise I'd never have found out about it. It's very good and I shall be a regular visitor there, thanks to you. Keep on truckin' - I think crediting little-known weblogs is worth triple points! :)

I was just giving an alternate source for the story that I saw earlier. My bad, didn't mean to step on your toes, dude!

get as close as you can to the original. which, if everyone does the right thing, should be REALLY easy.

What is this "credit" you speak of? You're the one who found it and decided to post it.

Adam: I didn't see it as a bad thing at all. It just made me think about the crediting stuff and I decided to check it out here, which was good in the end. Pancakes are fine.
Miguel: RTFM is my favorite one (Bernardo, the author/owner, is quite the figure). If you want some more brazilian blogs, I can send the links to you. Mail me (rexgregbr@yahoo.com).
