MeFiSwap 2011-1 commences. January 14, 2011 3:16 PM   Subscribe

Fire up your CD-burning lazercheeses, rifle your music collection swamp for suitable floaters, and elect your stamp-licking uberminions. MeFiSwap 2011-1 commences.

Twice a year for the last several years, hunnerds of MeFites have compiled their most brilliant tunes, burned them onto handy, decorative CD-Rs, and mailed them across the globe.

>>>>>>> To sign up, send me an email with BOTH your MeFi username and your mailing address at:
tediseasy [at] gmail [doot] com

I will reply with a form letter confirmation saying something along the lines of 'You're signed up to swap!' and acknowledging any special requests.

Before you sign up, however, please familiarize yourself with the swap guidelines:
  • Swapsets consist of 6 people. You mail out 5 copies of your mix to the other swapset members, and in return you get 5 different mixes mailed to you.
  • We swap audio CD-Rs. Your swapmates should be able to put the disc you send them into just about any CD player and have it work. If you want to swap data discs (loaded with .mp3s) or tapes or something and enough are interested, I can set up a side-swap. Please do not send any media other than a music CD-R without running it by your swapset first.
  • If you signed up to participate last time but didn't mail out your mix, you are not invited to swap again you damned mooch. Maximum pukka is attained through 100% participation. If you sign up to participate this time, do so with the full intention of mailing out at least 5 mix CDs within ~6 weeks from today. If you didn't get all 5 mixes in a previous swap, feel free to email me so I can keep track of who's eligible to swap again and who's not.
  • You may be asked to mail overseas, and if you live outside the USA, you will most definitely be asked to mail packages to foreign countries. Special requests regarding mail should be included in your sign-up email.
  • Communication is important so if you can't get your mixes out by the mailing deadline (see below), let me or the other members of your swapset know.
Deadlines
Here's some schedule:
  • Sign-ups close in ~2 weeks on Sunday, January 30th, 2011.
  • Swapset assignments will go out shortly thereafter via email.
  • The mailing deadline will be about a month after the swapset assignments go out, tentatively set for February 28, 2011. The sooner you mail out your mixes, the better!
If you would like to be in two swapsets (mailing 10 copies of your mix out) or if you have any other specific requests or restraints, please include them in your sign-up email. I will honor them the best I can, but no promises. I'll be around here to answer any other questions or concerns.

Yay, happy swapping!

I, sadly, had my life kind of fall apart and still have not shipped out the CDs required from the last CD swap.

I will be making good on that as soon as I can put them together, and will not be participating this time around.

I apologize to everyone in my swap group for having poor follow-through this time around. (Although I'm not the only one in my swap group who didn't mail out, so maybe I'll prompt the other flake to follow through also.)

Oh, and these questions always seem to come up:

Packaging: Most folks use the standard padded mailer, but if you can figure out a way to deliver your mix without it bending, breaking, or otherwise becoming damaged then go nuts.

Themes: Make a theme for your mix! Or don't! Put what you wanna put on your mix.

Liner notes: Some include detailed liners with the mix disc. Some put them online to be referenced later. Some just send a bare, unmarked disc (don't do this though; at least put your username on it or something).

Just a few clarifications/requests:

If necessary, or if you don't want mail to you to have your username on it, include your real name as a part of your mailing address.

Also, please include your country in your mailing address, even if you're in the USA.

Confirmation emails are trickling out (I'm at work), so if you don't hear back from me right away, don't worry. I'll respond soon with either your confirmation or a request for more information.

Thanks!

I'm not eligible for this swap as I, er, still have CDs to send out to last go-round's swap set. Which I am so going to do now that my memory has been jogged.

So, sorry Brown Eyes that you got shafted. Think of the CDs that will be on their way to you as just... kinda late Christmas presents.

I sort of have an excuse: I found out I was pregnant (after I'd signed up) and proceeded to lose seven months of my life while I had no energy to do ANYTHING other than work and gestate. Now that I'm not working, I have time for things like "going to the post office" and "putting away my laundry." But anyhow, sheepish and very sorry.

I'll definitely have to put more effort into a cover this time. Mine was just plain paper with the track names, while everyone else made lovely covers. Kind of embarrassing. I enjoyed making the mix, though and the ones I received introduced me to a lot of great music.

Here's what the previous alt gothic country mix was

Heh! I went to high school with (the awesome) 16 Horsepower's Dave Edwards, back in the days before he went by David Eugene and started dressing like a 19th-century itinerant preacher. I had a little crush on him for awhile, particularly during that semester when he had the most beautiful raspberry-jello colored hair... His first band was about two steps away from being an Alarm cover band (this was the mid-'80s, so I do not mean that as an insult), and he used to eat a lot of Hostess fruit pies at lunch.

What did he dress like before?
posted by Brandon Blatcher at 12:44 PM on January 17, 2011

standard mid-'80s punk-ish dude style... jeans, band t-shirts, thrift store grandpa sweaters, army or leather jackets, floppy hair over one eye. He was cute! Somewhere in my vast collection of teenage memorabilia that's scattered among boxes somewhere, I have the breathless review of his first band's first concert (an all-ages show at some dingy club in front of maybe 100 or so kids) that I wrote for my high school paper, with the confident declaration that They Would Be Stars One Day!

He played guitar (and I think he was originally a drummer) but I don't recall him playing anything else at the time with his first couple of bands I saw him with. I don't think I've seen him since c. 1988 or '89, so pre-16HP.

For those of us who have massive libraries of mp3, but also have access to iTunes and conversion programs, what formats should the songs be in??

We swap audio CD-Rs. Your swapmates should be able to put the disc you send them into just about any CD player and have it work. If you want to swap data discs (loaded with .mp3s) or tapes or something and enough are interested, I can set up a side-swap. Please do not send any media other than a music CD-R without running it by your swapset first.

thank you.

It will be listed as "Audio CD" in pretty much any program that you use to burn the CDs. Here are the directions from Apple for how to do it in iTunes. "Audio CD" means that the CD is just tracks of audio, as opposed to a "Data CD" that would have computer files on it.

Am I the only person who waits for the swapset name and then makes something themed entirely around that?

This will be my fourth time participating and it has never even occurred to me to base the theme of my mix on the swapset name. Also, unless I've been too obtuse to pick up on it, I don't think any of the other members of my swapsets have done so. Some have made cover art based on the swapset name, but not the mix itself.

I have a hard enough time coming up with a good, flowing, well thought out mix without handicapping myself by trying to conform to carsonb's completely random and arbitrary assignment of a swapset name. If you are able to do that, my hat is off to you.

OK, it's been nearly 2 weeks, and sign-ups close day-after-tomorrow, on Friday!

- If you chimed in here in this thread wanting to participate, but didn't send me your MeFi username and mailing address in an email at the address listed in my profile (please no memail!), YOU ARE NOT SIGNED UP. Send me that email and we'll get you sorted out.

- If you did send me an email and haven't yet had a response that started with something like, "Well hello swapper! You're signed up to swap!" confirming that you're participating, please email me again. At this point I'm 99% sure everyone who's contacted me to sign up is in fact signed up.

- If you're itching to mail your mixes out, the good news is that swapsets are being ordered and checked and double-checked starting now and should be out by Monday evening at the latest. Once you know who you're swapping with, there's no need to wait for the mailing deadline* to act—stick those mailers in a post box ASAP!

- Any suggestions for swapset names? There'll probably be 19 groups this time. I'm drawing a blank and would hate to resort again to something as topical and inane as last swap.

* Mailing deadline is still set for Monday, Feb 28. If, for whatever reason, you're going to miss the deadline please please please! let your swapset or myself know.

Thanks again for organizing this Carson!

To the Chiffons Racket: I've just finished the cover for my mix and it's going out soon -- maybe as soon as tomorrow. The last couple of mixes have been imaginary soundtracks to novels. This one's based on Denis Johnson's Fiskadoro.

Yeehaw!

After several hours burning CDs, cutting patterned paper into funny shapes, gumming up library books with purple glue, stickering it up, and standing in line at the post office, my swap contribution is complete!

Ten people are going to be very happy next week--hopefully. :) Let's just say that my musical taste ranges towards the eclectic.

I'm having fun playing with a new LightScribe drive I just installed... Wowie zowie, do detailed graphics take a long time to burn. They look neat, though.

Discs by the end of next week, Apollas Squeezes.

Mixes finished; final touches being put on liner notes; the burning of witches discs begins in earnest tonight. Watch your mailboxes in the next week or so, Dolls Problem and Pearl Riders!

Alright fellow Apollas Squeezes, I've managed to get all your mixes packaged up and ready to go. They'll be in the mail tomorrow!

The last couple of mixes have been imaginary soundtracks to novels.

That's really interesting: mine is the soundtrack to an imaginary novel.

I want to hear Polyhymnia's scratchy Appalachian recordings.

Mine are in the mail. I also uploaded it to MixCloud because... because I wanted to see if I could. Seems I could, so I did. Would possibly be a bit unfair to give the URL out too generally (Twitter already posted it, even though I didn't ask it to) until the disks have had a chance to arrive, wouldn't it?

I think so, yes.

Wow, I already got Consonants Without Vowels' (excellent) CD yesterday. Go Cookie Swindles! My mix is done, the liner notes printed up and placed in cases, but I have to go get some envelopes and more CDs today...
