I like it. I never was a big fan of that mustard-links-on-blue-background thing.

I get it! It's an April Fool's Day joke, following the Kuro5hin/MetaFilter merger hoax! It looks like Kuro5hin and it's got the 4 to prove it.
For a moment there I was frightened. Damn you Matt and damn you Rusty and your "no comment" come-on!
Brilliant! :)

It's funny, but please return to the soothing blue color scheme ASAP. For some reason, this brings to mind those studies that suggest prison walls should be painted in calming tones to keep the inmates happier and less likely to riot, so don't be surprised if we see a lot of flame wars today.

It just goes to show that Matt has a cunning little plan. We would never be able to stay and read metafilter for as long if it wasn't for the normal easy-on-the-eye colour scheme.

I guess I can't stop thinking that the ultimate April Fools Joke would be to announce something that seems like an obvious joke, but isn't.
But then, I've eaten a whole lot of sugar and caffeine today (Chocolate Bunnies!), so hopefully my paranoia is chemical in nature, and everything will be A-OK tomorrow.

While it's a problem that would (presumably) only last one day, am I the only one who can't log into the front page any more? I came home tonight, checked out MeFi, saw the change, but couldn't log in. Can log in and out of metatalk fine.

If it is not April Fool, I need a large magnifer. But since it seems to be a wide spread thing I will pray for joke and deal with it if not. I wonder how long it took to contrive this liitle plan?

My thoughts exactly. I think the color scheme may have been a large part of this site's success. Perhaps a humanitarian concern for obsessive posters should be more important than creating a great collective work of art?

Guys, this is not a joke. Check out the date on the bottom.
Check out Rusty's link for the full story.
I've been increasingly busy over the last few months, too busy to keep up with the code, and too busy to admin the entire site. In the past few weeks, you've probably seen more than one bug not get fixed and you've probably seen me freak out on someone when they didn't deserve it. My time is short, and I can't dedicate the necessary time and money to the site. The more I looked at Kuro5hin's scoop code that runs their site, the more ideas I got for an implementation at MetaFilter. In case you've never seen the scoop engine, it's quite a bit more advanced than the stuff you might see at slashdot. Readers can rate any posting, sort posts on several sets of criteria, and the stories on the index page only get there after being voted up by the members. It goes way beyond simple filtering and reputation management, as you end up with a truly democratic, emergent system running the site.
I talked to Rusty at sxsw about a migration of MetaFilter over to scoop, and we kept talking. K5 has a hardware sponsor, and we discussed moving over to some free linux boxes, and it grew from there. Eventually we both asked ourselves, how much difference would there be between MeFi and k5 if they were functionally the same? Last week, Rusty found an anonymous donor, emailed me an offer, which I accepted after seeing the correct number of zeros in it.
As part of the acquisition, first off the name has been changed. We agreed to do this just a few days ago, to ease the transition to the new server hardware and software. K5 and the new M4 may even reside together at a new url (currently codenamed O3), with the two userbases joined. That last part is still up in the air.
Anyway, now that M4 is part of Kuro5hin's new network, I'll still be around to admin the site, and after the migration to the scoop engine and linux boxen, the need for me around will greatly diminish, as you will get to pick what shows and what goes on the future version of MetaFilter. Thanks to all, it's been a fun ride.
