where the heck are you, elusive post? February 28, 2011 5:12 AM Subscribe
I have been searching in vain for a semi-recent post which asked for examples of films where a character is considered interesting specifically because of his or her illness. All my search skills have led to nothing (as is typical every time I search for a past post on Metafilter---what on earth am I doing so blasted incorrectly?) Can someone kindly locate that post? I am reasonably sure I did not hallucinate it.
Yup, that's the one. I don't know why I remembered it as being film-based. Thanks!

And in the vein of improving your search chops, that thread is the first hit for a google search of [site:ask.metafilter.com illness interesting]. As a rule of thumb, use google site search when you aren't sure of the exact wording or terminology but you do have a specific thing in mind; use the built-in search if you are looking for a URL or if you know an exact keyword, model number, or phrase that would identify the post or comment; and use tag searches if you have only the vaguest idea of what you're looking for.

yeah, adding site:ask.metafilter.com is the way to go with searches for ask. I never find anything unless I google it. Still not sure why it's not an option in the "search" section on the site, to be honest.

At the bottom of every search results page here at MetaFilter is a link to the exact same search at Google.

That's really helpful. I usually input my search terms and "at Metafilter" into Google. For some reason I thought that had the same result as "site:etc." Thanks.
