all autoplaying audio all the time.

"Hello, my name is Matt Haughey. I'd like to welcome you to my website, metafilter. Whether you're a brand new user or a returning long time fan, I know you'll find something here you'll enjoy. Thanks for stopping by." (repeat)

When the REAL rapture comes (probably in an hour or two, or perhaps on Tuesday of next week), you can damn well bet it is going to "autoplaying audio". Who are you going to bitch to about that, you think God gives a damn about the damned? Some things just are what they are.

Sheesh....

Hello, my name is Matt Haughey. I'd like to welcome you to my website...

Ooh, ooh, can we have one of those things the GOP is so inexplicably into where an actual little video Mathowie pops out of the bottom corner of your screen and delivers a speech?

This would make for an exquisite April Fool's Day joke.

A bit of context would be nice, nowonmai.

If you don't understand, then clearly you are not worthy. Unlike me. I totally understand, even though I am clearly not worthy.

1. Google homepage spokesperson video
2. View examples on the first dozen or so SEO-placed websites.
3. Be grateful for Matt's good taste and restraint.

At the predicted time of Rapture, all the sub-sites except MetaTalk where blank except that they had Blondie's Rapture video embedded in the middle of the screen.

Who's Blondie? What rapture video?

We should name him Clippy.

So, umm, I got the "Closed For Rapture" message, but no video. Just me?

Google homepage spokesperson video

Or, as our agency's real estate client always called it, Video Girl. "I want Video Girl!" It sounds annoying, and it sorta was, but it was also refreshing: he would agree to any other aspect of the site without any micromanagement, as long as Video Girl was there. It was a decent tradeoff. (Still doesn't mean the website's in our portfolio, however...)

Feature request: future recipients of MeFi pranks not to be a whiny sissypants about it. Sorry your computer made a noise you didn't expect, but I imagine life will go on.

This kind of stuff is harder to deal with when you are using a screen reader.

What would be really cool is if web browsers had a global mute button that overrode any and all embedded players. That way you could leave the volume and mute controls of your desktop as a whole however you liked them, because surprises are generally only going to come from your web browser.

(And yes, I realize that "embedded" audio doesn't really go through the browser and the browser has no control over it. This is a defect, IMO.)

Failing that, a distant second would be if the Flash mute control was persistent -- mute audio on any Flash embed and it remains muted in all Flash embeds until you unmute it.

My only complaint is that this wasn't a rolling gag. Everybody should have been pranked.
posted by It's Raining Florence Henderson at 6:06 PM on May 21, 2011

I missed it.

Oh, and for the record the Rapture did occur. Some guy in Uganda was the only one found worthy. The rest of us are among those left behind.

Hey, anyone see Kirk Cameron?

Instead of demanding that sites conform to your strictures, why not just install a flashblocker? I haven't been suprised by an auto-playing website in years.

Everybody should have been pranked.

Well, they’ll prank ya when you’re walkin’ ’long the street
They’ll prank ya when you’re tryin’ to keep your seat
They’ll prank ya when you’re walkin’ on the floor
They’ll prank ya when you’re walkin’ to the door
But I would not feel so very spanked
Everybody must get pranked

Brandon Blatcher: A bit of context would be nice, nowonmai.

Sorry, Brandon. For about an hour in the middle of last night (local time), the front pages of MeFi and AskMe were replaced by LOLXIAN jokes that involved obnoxious auto-playing audio. The MeTa thread directly below this one has more information.

Unfortunately for me, this audio turned out to be at family-waking volume and my current context is persona non grata.

This function is, in fact, built into the Windows 7 audio mixer.

I'm generally a cranky old man who doesn't like internet pranks. But if your family was sleeping and you were using the computer, why wasn't your audio muted?

"I am Matt Haughey and I am here to ask you a question: Is a poster not entitled to the sweat of his brow? No, says the man on 4chan; it belongs to the lulz. No, says the man on Facebook; it belongs to Likes. No, says the man on Twitter; it belongs to the bot accounts. I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose... Metafilter. A site where the font nerd would not fear the threadlock. Where the scientist would not be bound by the comments section of a YouTube video. Where the donut would not be constrained by reasonable size limits. And with the sweat of your brow, Metafilter can become your site as well."
