I went on a vision quest, once. It led me to a mirror. I looked in the mirror, and found a stranger looking back at me. But deep in that stranger's eyes - deep, deep in that stranger's eyes, levels upon levels of reflections down, I caught a glimpse of an expression that I recognized as that of my barber. What a butcher job that old hack did, wheezing into my ears and dripping sweat down my neck. I went home and paid my son to shave my head. True story.

I thought these kind of threads were traditionally closed up fairly quickly. Since Cool Papa Bell isn't around to respond to comments what's the purpose? I believe I am the only mefite to meet with Coolpapabell face to face (he told me I was his first!). He was very nice and I'm sad to see him go. I told him to go to a few meetups but I guess that isn't his cup of tea. He also got me into a private party at the 2011 Game Developers Conference (with an open bar! wahoo!) I can sort of understand why he wanted to be private, but he told me some great anecdotes and spun some good advice on our mutually shared interest in the game development industry. Were it not for me getting hired in Philadelphia I'd be packing up to move to Seattle, job or no, based on his advice and experiences.
So, I hope you find what you're looking for CPB.

A number of years ago I lived in a very bad part of St. Louis. Once, I found myself walking with my friends through a nearby cemetery, and we came upon the grave of Cool Papa Bell. His tombstone had some detail about his life and times, including his record-breaking base-running skills, and how he never got to play in the majors because they were still segregated at the time. And I remember thinking how sad it was that nobody heard of him, and how I only heard of him because I had found myself walking through a random cemetery in North County. And then I came to Metafilter and saw that someone else knew who Cool Papa Bell was, and I was like, "Cool!"
