Metafilter Yemen post contains link to malicious site August 9, 2011 12:48 PM   Subscribe

Meta Filter post links to malicious download site.

This link contained in this Meta Filter post about Yemen directed me to a site that was reported by my antivirus software as attempting to download high severity intrusion exploit kits = Beware.

Neat pictures, though.

Huh. I get no such warning (on a computer that has anti-virus software up the wazoo). No one else in the thread is reporting it either.

Flag as 'Other' and hit the Contact link in the bottom right hand corner of any page. 'Cause there's not much to discuss here (aside from rtha's experience, to which mine is similar), and notifying the mods directly is much more effective.

Nothing to discuss here, folks!

What is the AV software in question?

This seems more of an email the mods kind of thing than a MetaTalk referendum kind of thing.

Yeah, false positives happen a lot with antivirus software. Of course you should be careful, but we don't usually remove a link unless we have several different people using different software reporting a problem.

If there's something funny going on at a *.metafilter.com domain that's a different story. We act to change things very quickly in that case. We can't police the entire Web for people, but we can make sure our own ship is in shape.

especially because people who missed the thread might just go ahead and click it despite the warning...

I mean, it's not like anyone would be like that...

(those pictures ARE beautiful...and I'm having to PC problems yet)

Some of us wouldn't mind a warning, between the time the contact form is sent and the time the mods respond to it. Thanks for posting this Meta.

I scanned the site using VirusTotal and Google Safe Browsing - nothing. Perhaps the call is coming from inside the house?

@ Sys Rq = Norton Antivirus

Some of us consider Norton to be a virus in itself. Just saying...

Normally I would constrain myself to feeling privately sanctimonious when someone breezes into a MeFi thread and drops an @username. But @ username? Great blazing spacebar Shmoobies, you're using an annoying convention in the wrong place incorrectly!

Then again, who the heck cares what grumpy old me thinks about MeFi conventions? Carry on sir!

I would run an extra scan just to be safe. The virus seems to be inserting the @ character at the front of the names of people you're responding to.

I went to a MeFi convention once.

Then I broke it.

"@ Sys Rq = Norton Antivirus"

I don't understand how SysRq equals Norton Antivirus. Or why there's an "@" in there. Are you typing from a command line?

Is the front page sidebar slowloading tonight for anyone?
posted by clavdivs at 7:22 PM on August 9, 2011

Yeah, slow occasionally for me too. Looks like the The Deck ad servers are having some trouble. If you hide those ads the sidebar will be speedy again. You can always log out and back in to reset the The Deck ad down the road.
posted by pb (staff) at 7:58 PM on August 9, 2011

I cleared history and refreshed the browser (dam thing screams Windows BRINE!) signed out then in, hid the deck and clicked on contact activity, clicked back.
working smooth, slight-slight lag but probably on this end.

@No_Shmoobies cool new way to communicate = already obsolete.

All the cool kids are using Google+ conventions these days.

Sorry my FPP caused any concerns. Sounds like it is OK after all, though.

I bet that post is responsible for the stock market slump.

Actually, the U.S. markets began a huge rebound immediately after I posted. Guess I should post more often?
