When I think of Metafilter, it's usually as a bunch of fork grabbers with fish down their pants and argyle socks. Toaster waffles topped with beans at our elbow on a bunny plate. A peeing elephant out in the garage. Declawed cats eating the leftovers left out over night while we wait for AskMe to okay our eating it.

There are many reasons that I am proud to accept this title, and I want to thank The MetaFitler continuity for this award. This concert is only open to boys right? If we are going to be thinking of ladies as sexy there are a host of potential issues. And just because I want to help, I am willing to step up and take the hit for the team if nobody else is willing to be objectified in this degrading way eh. I even have quite nice boobies so that must count for something and I write paragraphs too. If there is some sort of voting involved I will suck you off if you vote for me (i.e., oral sex). In conclusion thank you again this is such an honour - you like me! You really like me!

I don't know if this contest is meant to be ironic, but if it is, the joke fails for me. I'm a bit shocked. My heart fell when I opened MetaTalk to see this post.

I'm having a hard time explaining to myself what it is that so offends me about this post. It may be that it's too beauty-pageanty, and beauty pageants might as well be a roadside sign outside the global village that says: "Welcome to Earth - Winner of Most Sexist Planet in the Universe Contest 5382 years in a row!"

There's also that MetaFilter is an all-text medium. This may be a somewhat crude conception of sexiness, but for me sexiness is 'sexual desirability' and that requires a physical body. The old joke is that MeFites might as well be AI scripts, churning out text, but I like that aspect of MetaFilter. I like that it is a body-less space, that people are appraised on words and ideas, not sexual desirability or other kinds of physical prowess. Yeah, MetaFilter is not so far removed from the real world that it will be fully exempt from all that, but I like the fact that it has less of all that than the real world.

I don't think the people behind this are sexist or anything like that, I wouldn't even say that they were misguided, it's just that this contest goes against what I love about MetaFilter.

Have you taken into consideration the fact that the closest thing to a physical representation the contest requires is an "ASCII image of yourself that may or may not show up properly formatted"?
posted by griphus at 9:13 AM on November 1, 2011 [2 favorites]

Kattallus: For me, it's both ironic and serious. I don't think this it is meant seriously to find the most sexy mefite. (Because, as I've already stated - that question has been categorically answered.) It's more of a chance for people to write a few lines of text and have other people vote on which of those text fragments gets to go in a magazine. It's all a bit tongue in cheek, and meant harmlessly. You can bet the sexiest comments will do best, but other than that people are having fun with it.

If anything, it's actually a direct analog of the "recent favourites" rss feed. People +1 the comments they like the most, and the top {x} comments get published in one place.

I really hope nobody is upset or feels marginalised by this competition. I'm pretty certain that wasn't the intention.
posted by seanyboy at 9:17 AM on November 1, 2011

I hear you, Kattullus. And I felt that way at first. But then I softened. I think this is one of the many ways MeFites play, and don't take themselves too seriously (at least not ALL the time). Also, I think we collectively don't see ourselves as a desirable bunch 'o humans, but damn, I've seen many of you, and y'all are sexy.

Also, there are so many of you whose words are like butter. Rich, velvety butter. I want to put them on toast and shamelessly lick the knife, but alas, they are just words. I never thought I could feel that way about the same 26 letters (and punctuation!) used by the English-typing world. But it's what you all do with them. I may even cast my vote on that alone, seen on site, sight unseen. As it were.

Kattullus: "I did read the contest rules. Condescending towards my objections isn't making me any happier about this"

It's just kind of hard to understand your objections in terms of the actual contest when you say it's like a beauty pageant and MeFites should be "appraised on words and ideas, not sexual desirability or other kinds of physical prowess".

There's no judging of beauty or physical anything. It's a text form with questions like "How do you like yr taters?". Contestants are being appraised on their words and ideas, and obviously not in a super-serious way. I don't think anyone is going to win by delving deeply into how physically attractive they are. Unless it's really funny.

I can understand people being irked at anything resembling a popularity contest, because that's something people get irked by, but it doesn't strike me as anywhere near objectifying or sexist. It's purely playful.

team lowkey: It's just kind of hard to understand your objections

I have two objections.

1) This is a popularity contest.
2) This uses the language of objectification.

Just one of these wouldn't bother me too much, but when added together it really bugs me.

I realize this has something to do with differing ideas about what MetaFilter is, but for me popularity contests are a bug, not a feature of MetaFilter. That it is wrapped up in the language of objectification makes it even starker and more annoying to me. I realize that it's probably meant ironically, but irony doesn't make anything any better unless it's subversive and/or funny.

To simplify, I had a sense-of-humor failure and it got my goat. I've been exhausting myself with work for the last few months so I'm more tetchy than I normally am.

Serious question: Could you expound on why you find this post offensive? Because I honestly don't understand why a person would feel that way. That isn't meant as slight against you, more intellectual curiosity about how you've come to conclusion that the post is offensive. Is it just the post or is the actual contest offensive also?

And if the contest goes against what you love about Metafilter, would you feel comfortable sharing what you love about the site and how this contest goes against that. It's cool if you don't want, I really am just curious about your through process here.

"It's interesting how many people are taking this literally, yet don't seem to have read anything about the linked contest."

This is Metafilter — No one reads the links.

Anyway, as a brief message to Kattalus, I'll recount an anecdote. This was early on in my relationship, one of the first weeks when heavy petting was first being explored. My girlfriend was on the couch, reclining, and I stretched out all sexily in front of her…

And fell onto the floor with a thump.

We both cracked up and everything was fine.

There was another idea for a quiz floating around, one that I'd still like to see done. It was "What women's magazine are you?" where we were riffing on MeFi injokes and the breathless Seventeen/Cosmo quizes, but the reason that me and my cowriter abandoned it was that it turned too much into making fun of other people, and not making fun of ourselves like we'd meant to when we started. I kind of think that any MeFite who goes into this contest is pretty much consenting to have their dignity skewered a bit, and is able to laugh at that. I'll definitely take a look at the entries and do an edit, just in case there's some dickery going on.

And maybe we can finally get "George Clooney" to write that piece he's been promising in MeMail.
posted by klangklangston at 12:52 PM on November 1, 2011

I agree with those who are freaked out. Far from being judge and singled out, even as the sexiest, we should strive for complete equality. To this end I suggest we get rid of usernames, favorites, post counts, user numbers or any other characteristics that coiled be used to judge or measure users. Simply issue UUIDs to each user and scrub the database of any other distinguishing information. I would suggest matching jumpsuits, motorcycle helmets and voice distorters for meetups.

If I can figure out an easy way to strip the user names from the post (I'm new to the tumblr thing), we can make it truly not a popularity contest. In reality I figure it's going to be more of a "mefite who writes the funniest answers to these questions" contest than anything else.

A jokey "How Sexy are You?" quiz was going to be my second choice if I couldn't figure out an easy way to pull off the contest.

And for the record, I think the social constructs of "sexy" are uninteresting. Internet searches for "sexy" things yield the same old shit (apart from that wtf "sexy burger" image I managed to find). But as boring as I find those things, I sure do like making fun of them.

It may be that it's too beauty-pageanty, and beauty pageants might as well be a roadside sign outside the global village that says: "Welcome to Earth - Winner of Most Sexist Planet in the Universe Contest 5382 years in a row!"

I think....I know where the disconnect is.

I think here, we're all sort of in a default state of "these are all friends" here, or at least familiar enough that we have a baseline level of trust. And because we have that baseline level of trust that people in here aren't REALLY seriously intending to hurt any of us, we feel more comfortable with joking around and acting like goons, in such a way that we poke fun at some of those very conventions you're talking about -- because we all sort of take it as a given that none of us REALLY means it.

But just because a lot of us get it, that doesn't mean we ALL get it. We may be having a crappy day or it just hits a sore spot with us. I feel kind of like this is like when I was eight and my father would sometimes tease my best friend when she slept over and he was making her breakfast -- she was a vegetarian, and he'd sometimes tease her by pretending to give her a whole plate of bacon before chuckling and giving her cereal. And I got mad one morning and said that was mean - but they both were all "what? No, your dad's totally kidding, and I get that, it's okay." For whatever reason it just didn't sink in until then for me that this was just a way for them both to be silly.

So on the one hand I can see everyone's kidding around as just that, kidding -- but on the other hand I know how it feels to not really have cottoned to the fact that it IS just kidding, and how distressing that can be. I think everyone who is kidding around about this knows that this is meant to be a spoof of that kind of "beauty pageant meat-market mindset", and everyone is engaging with it on that spoofing level. Because we do all have this baseline of trust for each other. There are those people for whom it still won't be a laugh riot, but I do think most of us trust that no one is endowing this with the serious intent that the rest of the world does -- and certainly not intending to do this to be mean.

I had an old Austin Healey six-cylinder when I was (what I would now refer to as) a kid--I drove it top down in all weathers. I also had a hat handed down from my father: awful suede leather with abundant fleece lining, big old ear flaps, and a rawhide chin strap. Toasty warm! I'd wear it while driving when it was below freezing.

One cold winter day I walked into my local and a (new) waitresses there said "you're the guy with the car and the hat!", having seen me in my natural habitat. We did not end up having sex or even exchanging many further words, so I suspect it wasn't a good look. Memorable, maybe, but not in a good way.

(That's OK, one of life's small pleasures is driving a convertible with a good heater and warm clothes around on a sunny but cold day with snow on the ground. Maybe not a completely even trade if sex with an attractive person is the other side of the see-saw, but less complicated.)

Mods, you let people do this?

MeTa comes from a long and rich tradition of almost no moderation, so yes, we do. I'm not totally stoked about that, but our usual rule of thumb is that we delete what we see as personal attacks [as differentiated from over the top hyperbole play-on-words which is what I think that was] and threats and not much else. That is slowly shifting as the general vibe of the site is shifting, I'm sure we have deleted more MeTa comments in the past few years than in the years previous, but it's not shifting very quickly. Flag early and often if you have a problem with this sort of thing but it's really not the type of comment we'd delete as an "I don't like this" judgment call absent a heavy-flagging mandate from the userbase. At the point at which several people have quoted it, it's basically inextricable from MeTa given the way this part of the site usually runs.

1) This is a popularity contest.
2) This uses the language of objectification.

Yeah, I find the whole thing pretty bad taste too for these reasons. For me the kicker is where you nominate someone else then everyone votes on them. So it's not even people putting themselves forward for fun, but instead everyone sitting around deciding who they like best. Singling out the cool kids for extra adoration squicked me out at high school and it still seems pretty juvenile now. Adding all the objectification language, even as a joke, gives it an extra layer of ug.

As for all the 'it's not official' and 'just ignore it', it's right here on the actual metafilter site and the mods are joining in so there's no way you can say it's not really part of metafilter or whatever. I will be ignoring it from now, but wanted to make it clear there are more of us out here shaking our heads and feeling slightly sad over this. I've seen this popularity rubbish in online communities before, it's not something anyone should be proud of happening here.

I realise I have no sense of humour and I'm totally not cool or whatever. I am happy to live with that.

I will definitely cop to this being poorly thought out! There is even a record of my thought process in the mefi mag thread from the other day where it went from a joke to the editors saying "make it happen" and me fucking around on tumblr to set something up all in one night. Given the short time frame, it sorta had to happen that way or it wasn't going to happen. I know klang in real life (hi neighbor!). He often bugs us to submit stuff to the magazine and suddenly this seemed like a way to do it.

To be honest, I really hope it's more than the usual suspects submitting something. Part of linking to the in joke references was so that anyone could play. The [grilled cheese] question is from goshling and I was all "what is so sexy about grilled cheese?" until I found that thread. But here's the thing: maybe some of the popular users are popular because they are consistently and frequently funny and who am I to begrudge them their small bit of internet success?

Secretly I want a dark horse to win it because I am a fan of such things. I mean I was never cool in school either.
posted by mandymanwasregistered at 10:41 AM on November 2, 2011

I think it's really an open question about whether the better way to undo the unpleasantness of being the last kid picked for kickball is to have a situation where you recreate kickball in a nerd-friendly image, or whether you just don't play competitive sports anymore. And ultimately people will make the decision for themselves. I have some of the same gut feelings as Kattullus. I don't enjoy competitive stuff that I also feel is somewhat arbitrary or where I don't totally trust the people putting it together to not have some uncomfortable-to-jessamyn angle to it [my own baggage, not other peoples']. That said, people do all sorts of things under the MeFi banner that I wouldn't want to put my name to and so I don't. No big deal, the place contains multitudes.

I'd appreciate if people were a little more mindful of the fact that when someone tells you that something makes them displeased that the best response to that might not be "okay let's now call that person names in a (maybe) jokey way" but other than changing all the rules of how MeTa works, that's not something I can really demand by fiat.

posted by villanelles at dawn at 2:06 PM on November 2, 2011

What does the sexiest Mefite win?

I don't like popularity contests, either, so I actually prefer the text-based contest to this thread, which does seem to be more "Pick me, pick me!"

I think the voting process is what makes the contest problematic. I'm fine with the favorites system, but I know some aren't, and this is like a big ol' favorites contest in some ways.

When I hold giveaways on my blog, I don't do the "vote for your favorite" thing, because in my experience the cool kids have all the accolades they need, and the rest of us, many of whom are already feeling less-than-appreciated, don't need the added reminder that their peers don't consider them the "best" whatever, you know?

But would anyone else still enter if the winning entry was chosen by, say, random integer generator?
posted by misha at 5:35 PM on November 2, 2011

I would've, yeah. I entered because I thought of five jokes that I hope will make people laugh, but I don't give a toss about winning; I'm just hoping people will laugh at my answers and am looking forward to laughing at other people's answers. Mefites are clever, I like it when they make jokes in a structured environment.

In that sense, I think the place where I'm coming from on this is the same place I'm coming from whenever a thread turns into a sort of impromptu string of riffs on one thing or another. It's fun to goof around together like that. And if that was the exact form this took—a thread where everybody answered the silly questions in the form of a comment in the thread, and everybody was reading other people's answers and laughing about it, I think no one would have blinked.

I get that the actual framing of this doesn't present that idea clearly, and I'd press that magical do-over button if I had it to help make this go more smoothly. I totally get that folks don't like how it was framed and why; without the context of the other thread where the idea came together, it reads really kind of odd for a Mefi-related thing. I get even that some folks just don't like any sort of framing of it as a competition with a popular-selection aspect regardless even of the superficial "who's sexy?" framing.

But at the same time I think that the actual spirit of the thing, that core "let's make jokes together and laugh" activity that it's really about, is a very Metafilter sort of thing and am hoping that despite the bumpy presentation the actual results will be just that: a bunch of funny writing for folks to enjoy.

Jesus Christ, that's depressing.

Maybe I should just stop trying to indulge in humour that doesn't come with a big flashing disclaimer upfront. Maybe something along the lines of "Warning: non-serious comment alert. May include puns, word-play, irony, hyperbole, wry cross-references to a quoted comment, and nuts. If you are allergic to any of these things please consider averting your eyes or at least necking a double espresso before long-jumping to the conclusion that this is just another example of what a bastardly human being Decani is."

Smilies are a bit more succinct though, aren't they? You have to give them that.

I got it. It was very clear that other people didn't. So yeah you might want to couch what you say and avoid really loaded words like slut even if you're making a joke that you think people will get. Because when they don't get it, then you're just the guy calling the other guy, the one who said he was already having a problem with something, a cheap slut and that's sort of not what you were going for, I think.

Maybe I should just stop trying to indulge in humour that doesn't come with a big flashing disclaimer upfront.

There's a big stretch of road between "No, No, I was just funnin' around when I called you a slut because you were bothered about objectification" and Big Flashing Disclaimerville, is the thing. Putting it on everyone else to either find your jokes funny or be considered humorless gits is kind of a crappy way to proceed.

I don't think your only choice is to switch over to condescending reels about how lousy other people are at finding you funny, seems like there's a lot of degrees between and tweaking your personal hilarity meter a few notches to the right would make a happier compromise.

But, yeah, if you're having trouble finding a place between flooring it and slamming on the brakes, it might be worth it for you to consider just hitting the brakes a little more often.

I want to publicly say what I said to Decani via memail just now, which is that I indeed missed his humorous intent, and that I regret my unnecessary swipe at his site participation. I'm not humorless, but I did post while angry, for which I apologize. I feel I should also apologize to the mods for framing my complaint with such outrage. "What do you think you're doing" isn't really an okay way to ask a question of people as patient and helpful as the mods here, and I've felt bad about that since I hit post. I'm sorry.

I think it's really an open question about whether the better way to undo the unpleasantness of being the last kid picked for kickball is to have a situation where you recreate kickball in a nerd-friendly image, or whether you just don't play competitive sports anymore.

In hockey, we usually just take a picture of the kid sitting there as last pick, post it on the internet, then give him a car to make up for the humiliation.
