Why is video evidence of a police officer breaking the law not considered FPP worthy? Why, when subsequently posted (read: buried) in a thread two days old, 330+ comments large, and long-since derailed, is that post deleted as well?

Posting the link in the Oakland thread was fine; the rant that went along with belongs here.

That you think it's important isn't a good reason to make a fpp.
posted by empath at 5:26 AM on November 4, 2011 [7 favorites]

Perhaps your video could help re-rail the existing thread.

That is, it could have re-railed it if you hadn't derailed it further by snarking at a mod in the process.

I really dislike it when people use MetaTalk to make a defacto front page post. You should link to the deleted thread, not to the video you're looking to promote.

However, that video is about as shocking and revealing as an episode of Golden Girls. So what?

Why is video evidence of a police officer breaking the law not considered FPP worthy?

Because (a) mefi is not a police watchdog site and (b) this is one detail in what has been a busy, busy goddam topic for weeks and weeks now and largely confining updates to open threads has been pretty much standard operating procedure here for years.

You have been really weirdly overt about giving the mod team a shitty time lately, C_D, and while I'd like to say something like I can respect your difference of opinion about how this place would run I'm really pretty far gone on summoning any kind of respect in practice in the face of your behavior. You want to disagree us, that's totally fine; you want to be an aggro jerk about it, not so much. Figure this out and cut it out.

Here's the original deleted thread, which was a textbook case of a poorly made, single linked, news filter post.

Are you kidding? "Cops do something illegal!" is not a good post. One link to video.

Go make a post about cops and protestors - don't fill it with fluff, but I promise there's a ton of interesting history about this and lots of resources on the web. Make a *good* post. Show us and yourself some respect and make a decent effort. This was a shitty one.

Police misconduct videos fall into the "higher standard" category of topics around here. Unless some thought is put into their posting, and they're framed really well, the threads turn shitty in a hurry.

Even well done, the threads often turn shitty in a hurry. So make an effort, and shake a bit of your breathless rhetoric.

Recipe time!!

Tempeh Orzilla:

8 oz orzo

For the tempeh
8 oz tempeh
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 teaspoon dried coriander
1/2 teaspoon anise seed
1 tablespoon soy sauce

For the sauce:
2 teaspoons olive oil
1 small red onion, thinly sliced
4 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 cup sundried tomatoes (dry ones, not the oil packed kind)
1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary
1 cup dry white wine wine
1/2 teaspoon salt
Fresh black pepper
1 cup vegetable broth
2 tablespoons nutritional yeast
3 cups baby spinach

To prepare the tempeh:
For time management, I steam the tempeh first, and prep the veggies, then rinse out the pot and boil salted water for the orzo. So, tear the tempeh into bite sized pieces and steam for 10 minutes. Set tempeh aside and proceed with the recipe.

Preheat a small pan over medium heat. Saute tempeh in oil for about 10 minutes, mashing the tempeh into crumbles with your spatula as you go. Add the spices and soy sauce, and saute another 2 minutes, then turn off the heat and cover until ready to use.

To prepare the pasta and sauce:
Boil orzo until al dente, then drain.

In the meantime, preheat a large pan over medium heat. Saute the onion in olive oil with a pinch of salt until soft, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and saute for 30 seconds more.

Add rosemary, wine and sundried tomatoes. Season with salt and pepper and turn the heat up to bring the sauce to a simmer. Let simmer until reduced by about half, 5 minutes or so.

Add broth and yeast and warm through. Then add the spinach in handfuls, letting each batch wilt before adding the next. Cook until spinach is thoroughly wilted then turn the heat off, add the orzo, mix well, and serve topped with tempeh crumbles.

Tempeh Godzilla:

For the tempeh
8 oz tempeh
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 teaspoon dried coriander
1/2 teaspoon anise seed
1 tablespoon soy sauce

For the Godzilla
1 Godzilla (green, ripe; if not in season, substitute canned Mechagodzilla)

To prepare the tempeh:
For time management, I steam the tempeh first, prior to summoning Godzilla from his undersea slumber. So, tear the tempeh into bite sized pieces and steam for 10 minutes. Set tempeh aside and proceed with the recipe.

For the Godzilla:
Summon Godzilla.

AAAAAHH! HOLY FUCK! What the fuck am I going to do with all this tempeh, there's a fucking giant fire breathing fucking what lizard or some shit just tearing everything apart! Jesus! Half the city is on fire and there are people screaming, Jesus, shit man, fuck!

And no one really likes tempeh anyway! Why did I make a recipe that required summoning Godzilla?!? Jesus, shit! That was so dumb! Fuck Epicurious! AAAAH I'm on fire ow

I think the recipe-posting is how another couple of other sites deal with trolls/controversy/general upset -- it's a sort of "boosting the noise to block the signal" distraction so people don't get all caught up in what the troll/nasty commenter said.

But those mods don't have as much of a hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves and get-to-work approach as they do here. So not sure it translates as well.
