I keep stopping by the Side Bar, but it's never open! December 27, 2011 4:59 PM   Subscribe

Back in October, jessamyn said, "We seem to have a small but dedicated group of people who use the fantastic flag, but a much larger group of favoriters. ... [P]aying more attention to them and being a bit more active on the sidebar (which is my job, more or less) is a good idea." But we've had only 3 sidebar entries in all of December, the most recent Dec 7. Can I respectfully ask jessamyn to do more sidebarring?

I've found wonderful things through the sidebar which I never would have seen otherwise, and I think it's sad that it's falling by the wayside.

This isn't meant as a callout, just maybe a nudge toward using this excellent feature more for the benefit of everyone.

I was terribly confused when I saw your post title, because there's actually a bar here called the Side Bar that I used to hear about all the time.

On topic, Jessamyn may not be around much today but it's a good reminder for the rest of us too. I haven't seen anything pop up in the Fantastic queue recently that's fit but I'll try to keep more of an eye out.

I knew someone was going to bring that up, but I really don't want that sidebarred. I just want to scroll down and find new awesomeness. And I feel like the candy store is bare when there's nothing new there for so long.

We need some obscure Elizabethan court titles for this site, like the Most Esteemed and Honorable Holder Of the Azure Flag or, in this case, The First Butler Of The Noble Sidebarre who's sole job is to maintain the side bar and laugh at the Duke's jokes.

I thought the AskMe where the person asked "where is my cat?" and then found the cat because of one of the answers should have been side-barred because it was just sort of hilariously unexpected that people on the internet could help someone find a cat hiding in their house.

I think it's sad that it's falling by the wayside.

Yeah it's been a few weeks. The things people have been flagging as fantastic lately seem to either be by the same old subjects [we love sonascope, but just add him to your contacts if you want to read all the great things he posts] or deeply personal stuff that is not the sort of stuff that I tend to drag out to the sidebar because I sometimes feel that people post some of that stuff not expecting it to be taken out of context.

Anyhow, yeah, I have had some stuff going on this month [today I was in the hospital for elective surgery; I am now fine] and it's been low on the priority list. taz has been schooled in the way of the sidebar as well and we'll try to make a New Year's Resolution to do more of that. Please help us by flagging stuff you think is excellent. Thanks.

I'd rather see a month go by with little sidebarring than see the quality of sidebar posts diminished. I haven't seen anything worth flagging as fantastic recently -- doesn't mean it's not there, just means I haven't seen it -- but maybe we're just in the GRARing time of year, rather than the awesomely-rich comments time of year.

Also: glad you're well, Jessamyn!

The flip side of this request is that although the vocal members tend to be the ones who visit MetaFilter daily, it's my understanding that MetaFilter comprises exponentially more members who are less frequently active on the site. For us, a slow-moving sidebar is ideal. If you're going to speed it up, I'd ask that you keep that in mind. Thanks.

One of the minor regrets in my life is that when I was hired, sight-unseen, uninterviewed for what turns out to be a largely horrid job in another country, working on behalf of what would turn out to be a pack of crooks in my own country, I only thought about turning up and claiming to have the sweary form of Tourettes and using it as an excuse to sprinkle my conversation with random amounts of "cunt-face" and similar epithets.

Although I'm sure mefi wouldn't approve.

Owls are everywhere at all of the trendy indie boutiques I traipsed thru for X-Mas shopping (not to be confused with X-Men shopping). At first I was all, "Hey, Owls! Cool. They must be the new Narwhal." By the end of the weekend, it was obvious they were totemic of the new decade, supplanting cupcakes as the touchstone of forward-thinking kitsch. Hell, they were even in strong evidence at Target... at that point you're nationwide.

I like owls, so I'm OK with this.

Therefore, since it is abundantly clear that the sidebar is a gift to all humanity, I request that the sidebar be added to the sidebar.

Though I'm not a heavy user of that flag (I tend to favorite and move on) I kind of view it like Twitter when I do: I'm throwing something out there into the ether that I'm pretty sure someone will see, but sitting around waiting for a response is only going to cause heartache. And then, only every now and then, I'm surprised by a big response.

Here are some things that I would like to see get added to the sidebar more/at all:

Great discussions of things that aren't science: A long great post about religion like in that recently called out thread in Meta.

Very funny one liners in threads full of very funny one liners, so the sidebar isn't just for the single joke but for the trend (example: Any Desk thread)

Projects that voted to the front page, just for starting as projects.

Interesting discussions in Music.

Personal stories that aren't long, just quick interesting tidbits, especially if the rest of the thread is good.

Get used to bicycles - it's not just for fixie hipsters anymore. Vintage roadsters, city bikes, mini-velos, folders, dutch bikes, chinese copies of dutch bikes, cargo bikes, steam-punky penny-farthings, bespoke custom hand-built custom models of all of the above - they're everywhere, and everyone loves riding them and tinkering with them.

Bicycles are the new bacon. There. I said it.

Also,

Okay who wants to make a comic of Wolverine losing a poker game to the other X-Men and having to take a sixteen-year-old Kitty Pryde (and other teenage mutant friends) to the mall because she's not supposed to go by herself?

Already exists--in fanfiction form at least. That usually means there's some kind of representation on Deviant Art as well. If you want a quality comic or other graphic representation, I'm afraid I cannot help you.
