High-res apple-touch-icon March 15, 2012 3:40 PM   Subscribe

I would love a small, high-resolution pony: could we get a retina-resolution version of Metafilter's apple-touch-icon that's used on the iPhone/iPad home screen?

It's is the only thing on my iPhone homescreen that doesn't have a high-resolution icon, and it makes it stick out. It's possible to serve a single icon at 129x129 pix, and it'll be automatically resized, so it wouldn't even involve adding extra icons, just regenerating the one you've got.

I would feed this pony.

As someone thinking about a new Ipad, I too would feed, water and exercise this pony.

I would bread this pony in cornmeal and then deep fry it until golden brown.

The icon idea sounds good too.

mathowie is the keeper of the site icons. He's out of the office but this sounds like a nice update once he's back.

This pony is better taken care of than I am.

Also, and I'm sorry to bring this up but it appears to be the thread for it:

The colors are all wrong. MetaFilter when written on a white background has a blue "Meta" and a chartreuse "Filter". If you want to make the icon have a blue background fine: make it a white "M" and a chartreuse "F". For some reason its a chartreuse "M" and a white "F". It's backwards.

(Personally I think the icon should be a white background with a blue "M" and a chartreuse "F" to match the front page.)

Sorry this has been bugging me for a while

Not that this isn't a great pony, but I personally just open Safari and hit 'm.' Then again, I just learned that you can add websites to your home screen a minute ago.

That doesn't really work on an iPad. I mean, it works, I guess, but the default field in Safari on the iPad isn't the address bar; it's the search bar. This makes no sense to me, but that's how it is, so you have to tap tap TAP to get the predictive search stuff to go away and get over to the address bar.

Yes, I'm whiney, but it really doesn't make any sense, and I would have thought Apple would know that. Heck, there shouldn't even be a search field. There should be one field, and you should be able to type addresses or searches into it. Didn't we figure this out years ago?

In the meantime, while awaiting the sound of the galloping hooves of this pony, I have saved MetaFilter as one of my bookmarks, in my bookmarks folder on my Ipad screen. But it isn't as nice and shiny as the pony would be.

Yeah, I've been meaning to talk to you about your resolution. It's a bit low. Are you feeling OK? It's 2012, you should resolve to improve yourself. At least strive for 250 DPI.

Maybe a contest to redesign the iOS icons?

I don't even want to think about the patent mess that is the universal input field for browsers.

Why do you ever need to access the address bar? Just stay on Metfilter.

I'm in favor of this idea, just because I want to see the butthurt and flameouts the idea of a change will generate.

I once requested this pony in a MetaTalk thread and I believe it did not get noticed. It was not important enough to me to really push, but yes goddamn it please hi-res icon.

Then again, I just learned that you can add websites to your home screen a minute ago.

You know how there are those pamphlets you get in your workplace, for classes on stuff like Learn to Use Your iPhone and you wonder who takes or gets sent to those classes? I would get sent to one of those classes if it weren't for this thread [and you, box].

I'm sure mathowie will fix this once he returns from his junket.

Yeah, I definitely need to fix not only the icon, but the main site logo to be more than 72dpi since it is totally blurry on retina display iPhone/iPad screens now. I'll get to this sometime next week.

There's a MetaFilter app? Really? Damn. BRB.

Speaking of MeFi apps, I see that these guys are still in the Apple Store with their lameass MeFi RSS app.

Matt, any update on a take down order?

While we're updating icons, can we get site-specific colors added to the icons for Music, Projects, and IRL too?

How diid i not see that add to home screen menu item for a year and a half? What'll they think of next?

Please create one for MetaTalk too, as that's how I always enter the site.

What if my favorite MetaFilter isn't Questions or Musics? They need to show some respect to Talks, Employment, and Earl.

alright, dumb question: what do "retina resolution" and/or "retina display" mean?
posted by Hoopo at 9:25 AM on March 16, 2012

It's Apple's assertion that the resolution of the screen at the distance you are likely to be looking at it from is the highest resolution that your eye could see anyhow. More.

alright, dumb question: what do "retina resolution" and/or "retina display" mean?

Basically it just means you can't discern pixels at normal viewing distance. Any more resolution would basically be useless, though I suppose they could always increase color depth or add 3d or something.
posted by empath at 9:48 AM on March 16, 2012

You really wouldn't think it makes that much difference, but it's huge, especially for reading.

If you’re making new logotypes, put only the site or subsite name in the logotype and use positioned live text for the subhed or cutline (which then could be varied from time to time), Pictures of text at 10px really is not done anymore. You also need an alt text.

It is an interesting question what the format should be. Perhaps PNG.

As it happens, I wrote a pretty decent post on this subject, with mathematical analysis from people who do optical science for a living. Worth a read.
