And perhaps more noteworthily for the fortunes of all involved; Rookie just got a shoutout on MetaFilter.

Yay Rookie! Love them so much. Hullo, teenage girls!

I, age 33, read Rookie. Do real teen girls though?

I'm 22 and I read it. I would've read it as a teenager if it had existed.

Yay for Rookie! I, too, am 33 and love it.

Tavi Gevinson, who founded Rookie and is still in high school, is amazing! And Rookie is great, too!

Love this magazine! I'm 22 and find it great too.

I enjoyed that article, especially when she implied that a person who doesn't think the green is awesome probably wouldn't make a good best friend. Can't wait to check out the rest of the magazine. Thanks!

Total tangent I suppose, but clicking on the link the very first thing that jumps out at me is the background image, which appears to be a photo of a bunch of pregnant/young women and girls in some 1960's/1970's commune/cult (judging by the Rolls, and the creepy Manson bearded dude in the poster)?

Is that a well-known image and therefore invested in more [double] meaning? From a little tineye and wiki, it looks like something called the "Source Family" led by Father Yod. What/why would it be on a site that apparently (from other people's comments here) is apparently a good, DIY online magazine addressing teenage girls/young women?

Maybe ask the person whose site it is? I'm always surprised at how many people repurpose images without doing even the most cursory tineye/google image lookuppery. I think that's just more normal nowadays.

Maybe they like private-press psych.

I think it is tangentially related to the theme of the month:

June’s theme is Paradise, and it is basically a love letter to our final destination of Los Angeles. Expect lots of Beach Boys, Weetzie Bat, Joan Didion, and then a ton of writing about what happens when you realize that the whole idea of a paradise is kind of a myth, and how to construct your own paradise, since adolescence can kind of suck, and I know it gets better, but you need to make yourself happy in the meantime, you know?

Generally, Rookie is pretty fascinated by the candy-colored weirdness of the 70's. Having a strange image of a horde of culty women in their Sunday prom whatever best is totally in line with their aesthetic. It doesn't mean that Rookie worships father Yod.
