AskMe mobile not working properly since sometime Tuesday August 30, 2012 2:28 PM   Subscribe

Some time on Tuesday, ask.metafilter.com mobile version stopped scrolling on my Motorola Droid I running Android 2.2.3. Still no worky.

Regardless of horizontal or vertical orientation, I can't scroll and clicking the "skip to menu" link does nothing. Clicking the category or comments links that are available to me "above the fold" works, and the following page will scroll properly. All other subsites work just fine. It's only a problem if I'm not logged in - once I log in all is normal.

I'm using essentially the exact same phone (Motorola Milestone, which as far as I know is literally the exact same hardware, but was just given a different name in Canada) and I can't replicate the problem.

Did you try rebooting the phone?

Checkhovian, I rebooted it yesterday and nothing changed. I just rebooted it now. The first time I went to ask.metafilter.com it worked completely normally. I closed the browser (the standard browser that comes with the phone), opened it again, and now askme won't scroll again.

I'm not sure what would cause this offhand. Can you scroll on other MetaFilter sites?

You might check and see if you get the same behavior logged out as you do logged in. You could also try switching to the standard version of the site and see if you get the same behavior.

All other MeFi mobile sites work normally. AskMe mobile works normally when logged in, abnormally when logged out. Standard version works normally.

Problem appears to be between screen and chair as the old saying goes.

Mine is fine. Reboot your phone. Clear the cache.

Do you see the little YouTube video box at the top of the page when you're logged out? You might try hiding that with the [x] in the upper-right corner. See if that changes things.

Same thing here for about two weeks. Only ask. Sometimes it works. I'd say 25%I'm of the time, it's fine.

Have you tried rooting your phone? New ROM? Recharging the dilithium crystals? Routing all powers to the deflector dish for a tachyon burst? Venting the plasma conduit? That's not it, hand me the hydrospanner! i dont know how we're going to get out of this one?

Oh android...always so bizarre. My g2x to used to randomly reboot itself in my pocket with no prompting. then I loaded it with cyanogenmod, now the gps doesn't work, but doesn't crash anymore. You win some, you lose some. Then you probably go back to iOS for the next one.

By the way, I wasn't trying to suggest that you're imagining the problem or that it is a "between screen and chair" thing; just trying to provide a data point for the mods as they look for a solution.

Chekhovian, my phone used to reboot without notice too, and I was advised to use a memory use app that keeps the onboard memory use on check - problem solved.

I'm also using a Milestone and haven't noticed a problem with AskMe. Could it be a browser issue?

k8t seems to have it. Clearing the cache seems to have taken care of it, I'll keep checking to see if it reappears - oomny does that work for you?

btw terrapin, if another user (oomny) was/is experiencing the same problem, does that still qualify as being "between the screen and the chair?"

pb, the little YouTube video box at the top of the page only shows up on my desktop when I'm not logged in. If I'm on desktop logged in, or if I'm on my phone, whether viewing mobile or standard, logged in or not, the YouTube box does not appear. Just for the sake of info.

entropicamericana, I like your hydrospanner.

Thanks all.

Clearing the cache seems to have taken care of it...

Glad that's working for now though I'm not sure why that works. Googling around I found someone else having this problem and they mentioned the YouTube iframe as the culprit. I might completely disable that for mobile devices and see if that helps too.

I cleared the cache days ago and still had the problem. Today it seems to be working consistently, with no changes from me. So i dunno.
