What's Metafilter Timezone? May 22, 2002 5:13 AM   Subscribe

What's Metafilter Timezone? I live in Belgium (same time zone as Paris, Madrid or Amsterdam). I have observed that the Metafilter "midnight" is somewhere in what is my morning. Where is physiscally the server? In what time zone is Metafilter's midnight?

GMT - 8, in California, USA, isn't it?

If's it's 5:19 there and 14:19 here (and probably 13:19 in Belgium), the server must be in California.

I believe the server is physically in New York City, in this fellow's apartment.

it's three hours earlier than EST, which would make it PST. but i'm sure the server is in NYC. A-OK?

The server is in NY, USA, but I believe it maintains Matt TimeTM, which roughly corresponds to the Californians observe.

STOP! Matt TimeTM!

Does Matt know about this? He looks a bit shifty. And something about the way the picture is posed makes me expect to see an airliner coming in behind him.

This is just too confusing and frightening. I'm setting all of my clocks to Metafilter time and I'm recomending that you do the same. Join us, won't you?

I should have known you'd be in on this.

No, I'm calling myself on my earlier post. I am a promoter of free-form clavdivs. But if you got up on the wrong side of the hovering orbital platform today and gutting makes you feel good, gut away.

please be a bit more specific, as one who confuses even himself...."I should have known you'd be in on this". So what should you have not been in on?

That you'd be in on the secret site of the server, the misleading time zone, the whole deadly plot, etc. Never mind.

Did the 'PST' in every timestamp give it away?
posted by jjg at 8:25 AM on May 22, 2002

The location of the server is secret, but it is known that it resides in a truck that is constantly on the move...it's a national security issue. If you will notice the 'PST' on the timestamp, that indicates Pacific Standard Time which is what we call 'California Time'. The fact that we are really using Pacific Daylight Time is a diversion so that the terrorists don't win.

Give away the location? No, because it's not there, it's in NY, which is EST or something, right?

The black helecopters will be dispatched shortly. Please don not be alarmed, as this is all just routine. The thermonuclearTM devices aimed at your residences are an added feature of MetaFilterTM. We hope that you will visit MetaFilterTM, in your next lives.

Have a nice day.

Man, that's a lousy picture of Jason. He's much scarier looking in person. I have lobbied unsuccessfully to have MeFi changed to EDT (it's actually running on PDT, "PST" regardless of what's appended to posts.) but no love.

I'm thinking I'll sneak in and do that during the next unscheduled MeFi outage.

I vote for GMT, too. Anil, I'll take down the phalanx of black-suited commandos blocking elevator access to the Metafilter cleanroom in Jason's luxury condominium and hotwire the biometrics, while you rappel down the side of the building and enter through the French doors via his four-sided penthouse terrace. Don't fall in the heated pool.

Feature request:
Having the current PST time displayed next to the date on the front page would be very useful for determining whether a posting to a link will be helplessly too late for it to be read by anyone (like this one) or not.
