80 minutes - 700MB - 5 discs - 6 swappers

The constraints of MeFiSwap are perhaps old-fashioned. Trading music. Physical media. (Remember tapes? We're not that old-fashioned.) The post, ha! But the thrill of 5 mixes from 5 fellow MeFites is still just as good. It's in the appreciation of careful track order, the wonder at a beautiful package, and the thrill of envelopes addressed to you (or just your username ;) showing up in your mailbox. This is why we swap.

Ahem, so anyway, here's what's going on:

Basics

1. Sign up to swap! (see below)
2. Make a mix of music you'd like to share and burn 5 copies of it to CD-R
3. Go to the post office and mail those mixes to your swapset.
4. Collect awesome mixes from your mailbox, and listen to them!

Guidelines (pretty important)

- You must be a MetaFilter member to participate.

- If you sign up to participate in this swap (see below) you agree to participate in good faith and mail out 5 mix CDs to your swapmates by the mailing deadline.

- If you have signed up to participate in a previous swap and then neglected to participate aside from collecting mixes from your swapmates, then you are not invited to participate again and go into the 'Damned Mooch' column of my list. Yes, I keep a list. And I check it all the damn time*.

- Swapsets consist of 6 people (you + the five recipients of your mix).

- We swap audio CD-Rs. As I've hinted, this is old-fashioned. The modern Internets have made sharing music with the people in your social circles very easy. Doing it with the post and physical media is not as easy. But this is how we do.

- The swap is international. You will likely have to mail at least one of your mixes overseas. This comes with a financial burden, so please take that into consideration before you sign up (see below).

Deadlines

- I'm closing sign-ups in about 2 weeks, on Sunday, January 27th. Please sign up by then (see below). Swapset assignments will go out shortly thereafter.

- The mailing deadline is the end of February, 2013. That's Thursday the 28th.

FAQ

- I am very happy with how much smaller this block of text is. I should rewrite more often. For lots of frequently asked questions and their oft-given answers, please see previous sign-up threads.

So, you'd still like to sign up? OK! It's easy! See below:
1. Send me an email at my email address, please. Put 'MeFiSwap' or 'Swap Me Maybe' somewhere in the subject line.
My email is in my profile, visible to members only. DO NOT MEMAIL, I will just write back saying that I asked nice the first time, in so many words.
2. Include in your email two pieces of information: One, your MetaFilter username. Two, your postal mailing address.
3. Start making your mix!

When you've signed-up properly (see above) you will receive an email in reply that says as much.

* If you participated in good faith in a previous swap and did not receive a mix from one of your swapmates, please email me at my email address and we can talk about it. The last swap had some bumps along the way, but I do believe that the participation rate was very good. If you and I and maybe the other person involved can talk about it, usually something good comes of it.**

** If you are the mooch who didn't mail out, please also email me. I can probably send you again the old swapset assignment email I sent during that swap, and you can get in touch with your neglected swapmates (to see if mailing addresses are still valid) and get mixes out to them. Late, sure, but the circle is complete. Once that happens, you are welcome to participate again.

I participated in the last round and it was really, really great. Each mix seemed like a special little peek into another MeFites world, and that part of it kind of became more important than whether or not I actually liked some of the songs they chose to include.

I'm signing up again!

assuming people should also include their ACTUAL name in the info they send you, yes? I'd just like to spare someone having their mail carrier look at them funny

That's entirely up to the individual. If you want to only include your username with your mailing address, that's fine. Mail sent to that address will be addressed to the username. Swapset assignment emails will include username and mailing address; whether or not that mailing address starts with an actual name is, again, up to the individual.

I'm in. Carson did you end up having to use any "pinch-hitters" last time around? Do you need volunteers for that this time around?
posted by .kobayashi. at 5:51 PM on January 10, 2013

I didn't!

Or if I did I don't recall. =O
Every time an issue came up it got resolved... eventually. Most of them were my mistakes. There were some people who missed the deadline. But I'm 1% short of sure that the problems that cropped up got dealt with to (my) satisfaction. There was the one ornery fellow who excused himself in the face of my problem-solving attempts, harumph. He was fucking ornery anyway, admittedly so.

There may have been other issues, but I can't do anything about the ones I don't know about. It was really awesome of the several people who volunteered to be 'pinch swappers' to do so, and the good will they provided the swap went a long way towards keeping me sane. But anymore it's generally not a malicious issue when someone doesn't mail out (my mooch deterrent is effective!) so as long as the communication thing happens we can usually attain a resolution acceptable to everyone.

I'll consider cashing in some of that good will if worse comes to worse, and so maintain a list of people nice enough to volunteer. But generally problems resolved themselves with some time and communication.

On the last swap not only did i find out that the drive on my laptop stopped working sometime in the last three years, but that it scratches the shit out of any cd you put in it! (Also, i couldn't remember the last time i used it).

I actually put another cd in a few days later, forgetting about this, and was again reminded of that Last Boy Scout scene with the tape player.

I wanted to encourage people to provide something resembling a real name - your international swap mates will probably have to fill out Customs forms are mailing an international package to a fake name feels really sketchy.

Also also, I need to digitally send kreedstar those songs since the post crushed her CDs. If I write it out here in front of everyone, maybe I'll remember to do that tomorrow.

$2-8, depending where you send it and as long as you keep it under or around 10oz.

Do people prefer wholesome mix CDs - as in all the songs are from the same genre? My tastes are all over the map and it is likely my CD is going to be really random as well...
posted by cyml at 12:07 PM on January 23, 2013

cyml, I have made CDs that spanned genres and received the same. I have both made and received CDs that were united by random themes (the "all Bo-Diddley riff mix" I made one year was well received, the "all the songs mention colors" mix I got one year was cool), but I've been equally pleased to get mixes that were just "here's all the songs I just happen to dig right now."
posted by EmpressCallipygos at 12:11 PM on January 23, 2013

I have already mixed mine, although I still need to tweak a bit of clipping out and normalize the volume. (And finish the art.) It is very mixed genre and has no obvious thematic hook, but the flow feels very natural (at least to me).

This is my first mix swap, but speaking for myself, I hope that the CDs I receive consist of whatever music the Mixer really wants to share, for whatever reason they feel like sharing it.

I think it's more fun to try to juggle a lot of different types of songs in one mix. There's a risk that it will end up sounding like you just put your iPod on shuffle or whatever, but as long as you put some thought into the ordering you can plan it out so that tracks next to each other in the mix go well together. Usually I start with a longer list of songs than I'm going to be able to fit on the mix, and cull it down to the best ones, that makes it easier to just throw out a song that doesn't fit.

I hope everyone can tolerate the fact that I don't know what the hell I'm doing (normalize sound volumes? clipping? what?) and am just going to burn a bunch of CD tracks to a CD. Probably low sound quality too. If you can't tolerate the sound quality, you can always microwave it.*

Swapsets are Odd Instruments, from the Odd Music Gallery, and chosen for the euphoniousness of their names (not necessarily their sounds). But if you want to hear them, most of the links below feature audio and/or video of the oddities in action.

The Amazing Pencilinas
The Aquaggaswacks
The Bazantars
The Bikelophones
The Clackamores
The Cymbaloms
The Daxophones
The Elementos
The Fiddle-dee-doos
The Flubas
The Hank Drums
The Harpouditars
The Huacas
The Kaisatsukos
The Koralimbas
The Lumberhorns
The Moodswingers
The Nondos
The Octavators
The Rumitones
The Surba-Halfs
The Tamburitzas
The Trongos
The Trylons
The Uberorgans

Yay! Yah! Bloop beep POW zonk! Go forth and swap!

Thank you for all your work on this, carsonb! Now off to make a playlist.

I'm in The Moodswingers. Not too sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
posted by FirstMateKate at 6:48 AM on February 1, 2013

BTW, would people who know more about sound engineering than me give me a recommendation - if I am burning a CD in iTunes, should I use "VolumeCheck" or whatever it is called, or no? I can never tell if it's working or not - it seems like using it makes songs that start quietly and get loud inaudible at first, but not using it results in me changing the volume all the time?
posted by maryr at 8:01 AM on February 1, 2013

I'm in the Moodswingers, too! Perfectly apt, for me. I love that it looks like a keytar from Star Trek, or something.

Yeah Sound Check will automatically apply volume normalization to your tracks, which means it will either increase or decrease the volume ("gain" in audio terms) of each track on your list so that they are all at the save volume level. Basically it's like iTunes is either turning the volume knob down or up by a certain amount between songs (but never during songs) to try to keep everything at a consistent volume level. It's not perfect as you say but it's probably better than nothing if you have tracks from a lot of different sources with different levels of loudness. Personally I use a program that gives you more detailed control over the loudness adjustments for each track but normal volume normalization is probably good enough.

I am very slightly worried that nobody has emailed me with any problems yet. It simply cannot be that an extra once-over before hitting 'send' caught everything!? Still holding my breath.

Watch out, The Bantazars! I think I've got my mix basically figured out, and it's a doozy. Hope you like free-jazz Merle Haggard covers -- but I've said too much already.
posted by .kobayashi. at 6:05 PM on February 1, 2013

carsonb, you put on a slick production here. Don't worry until you need to! We're all busy shuffling tracks and listening for perfect (or jarring, depending on your mix-making habitus) transitions.

(This is so fun already. Elementos, a small package of strange will be on its way shortly!)
