Yay! This is great, I just want to make sure that my Co-Editors-In-Crime, metafilters own, Scientist and ChuraChura aren't forgotten. They are amazing and have all kinds of awesome papers to damn well link to on our blog.

I read the title as the total number of finishing moves available to the mods when deleting a post...

Skipped forward to the bit about Travels with Samantha. Mentioned it in a comment a few weeks back and sent Philip Greenspun a (hopefully not fanboy-ish) "Hey! It's 20 years, dude!" email. He sent a nice response, including:

"Thanks for the link. The 20th anniversary is not until September so I have a few months left. I guess I should do a Kindle version."

The end result of his book for me (and a few similar ones e.g. "Blue Highways") is now 3+ years spent in America, several road and rail trips (including a 7,000 mile loop), and now engaged to an American. Yeah, books can influence.

That Ron Jeremy question was great. I had never heard of Ron Jeremy before, period, and that question had me reading the answers and linked articles in fascination for longer than I'd like to admit. I thought it was one of those Only on MetaFilter questions where you had people answering a question about a porn star so seriously and without the lulz. Well played.

About the swear jar, I don't think I ever had "hell" on the list. I don't think I've changed it since the original list: fuck, shit, damn, dammit, dick, bastard, and asshole. We could change it if you want, though. Or I could post what it finds, for sanity checking and lols.

Also, we could have swearing offsets, where e.g. dagnabbit, gosh, and darn count against swears, perhaps fractionally.

Cheese curd talk got me to googling where I can find them around here (Philly) and I found we just got a food truck that exclusively makes fried cheese curds.

I like the idea of fractional offset swears. But I feel like it will be pretty easy to get swearing to the point where it's just a once in a while thing. This one was already scads better than last one (sorry Mo Nickels!)

Who are you calling a scad, eh?

cortex: Wait, the f-word? Which one is that?
mathowie: It was just all swearing.
cortex: Damn it.

Nice fucking try, cortex.

OMFG. I LOVE grade B maple syrup! The plinth household favors grade B more than any other variety - but grade C? I've never seen that in these here parts.

Trying to figure out how to make a sugar shack breakfast work with a child with Celiac disease, though...

gluten-free rice waffles, yes?

Also, for whatever reason, I've been on a Halloumi kick lately...Halloumi with fried eggs, in salads, over beans, fried in slices, whatever! That part of the podcast really amused me.

So. Cracker Barrel.

It's more of a Southern phenomenon than Midwestern, although there are some locations out that direction. Their headquarters is based just outside of Nashville in Lebanon, TN, so you can also consider that something of the epicenter of the restaurant expansion. If you're looking for a Yankee sort of approximation of what they offer by way of food, well, think about IHOP or perhaps your local all-night diner for the breakfast items and a southern meat-and-three (sorry, don't have another analog here) kind of offering for dinner. Every location will have very strange junkshop items and vintage ads on the walls (see previously) and the front of the restaurant will always be a miniaturized Wall Drug offering all kinds of kitsch and vintage candy. They also sell rocking chairs out front.

There is no buffet.

They are generally placed within half a mile of interstate exits with billboards advertising their locations several miles out. Paraphrasing jessamyn, it's one of the few places along the highway to get table service when on a long road trip. In general, not a bad place to grab a bite.

Golden Corral (or as we called it in college, Golden Feedbag) is a different beast altogether.

Okay, I ran the swear counter. There's more swearing in this comment than there was in the podcast.

I took damn and dammit off the list. Counting only fuck, shit, dick, and asshole:

jessamyn: 3, one from the project titled "Get Your Shit Together," and a couple of "shit"s after.
mathowie: 0! There was a false positive from mentioning Dickens, which, ah, did I mention the process was a hack?
cortex: 4, and all were "bullshit" and "shit."

In summary: You're doing much better, but you still have shit to work on.

I am legitly upset at the trashing of Popeye's in this podcast. I know you're food snobs, but...Popeye's!

(Although Matt's aversion to Roy Underhill was hilarious.)
