No Avoiding Google April 16, 2013 11:00 PM   Subscribe

I was initially trying to read the metafilter post There's No Avoiding Google+ and I kept getting a server error: Your Browser: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.31 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/26.0.1410.64 Safari/537.31

I then tried searching for the post using the metafilter search box and the query "no avoiding google" and get the same server error (using both Chrome, and then Firefox and then IE).

I then found out that http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/metafilter.com shows that metafilter.com was down, but not http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/www.metafilter.com.

At first, I thought I was dealing with a Google conspiracy. I'm taking this as a sign to go to bed.

It keeps going up and down for me too

Just some tinkering under the hood. Things should be mostly back to normal now. For future reference, you can check the status blog, and if something was planned (and will take more than a couple of minutes), it should show up there. Pb posted this there earlier: "We need to perform some server maintenance tonight at 10:00 PM Pacific Time. We plan to be offline for 30-40 minutes."

Sorry, everyone. Doing some maintenance tonight that's going a little longer than planned. We're going to be bumpy for a bit.

Yeah, looks like we ran into some major snags while updating the servers. We pointed the domain at the old backup/staging server while fixing things on the main server and as a result, there were a couple little things that weren't working, like the metafilter.com to www.metafilter.com bounce. It should be working now.

Folks who are using macs may have the DNS cached that was pointing to the part of the site that we switched back and forth from. This page may be helpful if parts of the site that should be up still appear to be not responding.

The archives can't be accessed, I get:

Just did the 'dscacheutil -flushcache' you pointed to jessamyn. Restarted Safari. Still no go.

The contact form should be working now. The archives won't be available until we move back to our main server, sorry about that.

I spoke too soon. The archives should be working now.

Status.metafilter.com

I don't know if it is related, but right now it looks like bestof.metafilter.com is returning a 403 Forbidden error.

I'm about 100% sure it's related. pb was up into the wee hours working things out, so he'll probably get that sorted when he wakes up.

Just to expand on empath's link a bit:

status.metafilter.com runs on Blogger servers (still, right?) and shows up even if the rest of the site is down. It's the first place you should look if metafilter.com doesn't resolve for you. But, you know, if the problem is happening at around 10pm Pacific time it's almost certainly server maintenance.

The MeFi RSS feed is still down.

Best Of should be working again.

The MeFi RSS feed is here. We haven't used the feed URL you're pointing to for a while. If you update you should have the version we're supporting.

That's the last time we let pb change the desktop image!

We haven't used the feed URL you're pointing to for a while.

It was up and running until about 12:30 ET this morning.

I've just discovered that my RSS reader deletes the entire feed history if you change the feed's URL.

It was up and running until about 12:30 ET this morning.

Yeah, it's one of those legacy things. We'd like it to work, but it's not on the list of things to fix when wires get crossed. So if you update to the feedburner link you'll have a more reliable feed URL.

Just logged in and I got an invalid cetrificate warning. The login page was serving the chat.metafilter.com certificate.

I've never used chat on this machine.

Thanks Mitheral, we'll get that fixed up later today.

Wow, a complaint at 2 in the morning (my time), and within 8 minutes, FOUR mods respond?! Where else do you get that level of service?

It's like you're all right there in my bedroom with me. I assume cortex would have been there too but his mouth was too full of giant donuts to chime in (I don't need powdered sugar all over my sheets anyway, thank you very much).

Also, I feel like pb is running on coffee, Red Bull or maybe even Adderall by now. Hope you eventually get some sleep, pb!

Cortex and Jessamyn: We have, like, 19 mods now. It's finally safe to sleep without one eye open.

Sorry, PB. No sleep for you. Ever.

The Feedburner feed started returning invalid XML at some point after 8:26 pm ET on April 22, and is still doing so.
