The MetaFilter Conspiracy June 4, 2013 4:51 AM   Subscribe

Attorneys James Daily and Ryan Davidson, better knownst to us as jedicus and valkyryn, are guest-blogging this week at the rather frighteningly prestigious law blog "The Volokh Conspiracy." Daily and Davidson, as many of us know, were propelled to fame and fortune by their joint project Law and the Multiverse, and the resulting book The Law of Superheroes, in which they apply our mundane Earth-Prime laws to comic books. And, of course, it all started at MeFi Projects.

Exciting! Volokh Conspiracy is big news indeed. Congrats!

Wow, they got a book? That's great. This is a much more book-worthy Internet diversion than many things which have gotten contracts.

This is so much better news than what I was expecting when I saw the post's title. Neat!

The Metafilter Conspiracy

[...]
i visited my mom today at the nursing home. i asked her about when i was yung in the early 10s, when i was 23 or 24 and if she remebered a web site, metafilter. she said she was suprised i could remember that and i asked why, and she said “because i used to think it was so strange that you said ‘i’m gona go read metafilter now mom’ and then you would open your laptop, which wasn't even on, and juts read the blank screen for hours and hours. you had a big imagination with your little web site.

That's very cool! Also it looks like the two of them first joined forces, so to speak, in the comments of the Projects post.

Hey, thanks. We had been on the Conspiracy's blog roll for a long time, and the invitation to do some guest posts came out of the blue a couple of weeks ago. We're pretty excited. The commenting crowd there is a lot nicer than most of the places we've guest posted, I've gotta say.

The book came out last October. The paperback comes out this October. It's been updated slightly and now also includes some concluding remarks. I believe they will update the ebook version at that same time.

"nicer than most of the places we've guest posted." Compare it to some of the comments at, say, Wired, where we've written a few pieces by invitation. I think MeFi remains the most receptive place the blog has ever been discussed, and that includes the blog itself.

I can fix that for you.

well, this is all good, I guess. But I hope y'all are clear on the fact that superheroes aren't real.

Metafilter conspiracy, huh? Does that mean you two just got the keys to the Metafilter cabal executive restroom?

There is no cabal

Indeed. That's one of the reasons I started the blog. Talking about fictional scenarios involving popular characters with unusual abilities is a) often more interesting than boring old real life and b) avoids some of the consequences of suggesting that a real person is a criminal or has committed a tort.

Awesome. I am very impressed by the blog and am glad there is a book deal and you both are getting more and more attention. It is well deserved.

Thanks all. It's been a lot of fun. It was great to meet some of you this past October, and we'll be sure to let people know as we do more events.

On that score, we did a panel at WonderCon about zombies this past March, collaborating with a group of forensic psychiatrists. It's being done at San Diego Comic Con in July. I won't be there (my wife is due the next day and I'm not that crazy), but James will, and we've found another attorney to fill in for me.
