MeFiSwap 2014-1 - The Songbird Swap Mailing Reminder! May 24, 2014 4:46 PM   Subscribe

Hey there MeFiSwappers! This is just your friendly reminder that the mailing deadline for the Songbird Swap is a week from today on Saturday, May 31ST. Get those mixes burned, packaged, and posted ASAP! Then come inside and tell everyone about your mix, or about the mixes you've received.

Did you miss another swap? Drat! NEVER MISS ANOTHER SWAP! Shoot me an email with your MeFi username and some indication that you'd like to know when the next swap starts, and I'll add you to the notification list. Conversely, if you're on the notification list and don't care anymore to hear from me, send that email and I will confirm your removal.

OK with this out of the way I can go bind those liners and package those mailers! Word up Tanagers!

The mixes I've gotten thus far are phenomenal and make mine pale in comparison! Well done, Cisticolas. :)

I got mine sent out a while ago, with liner notes by the quidnunc kid. I think this is my favorite mix I've done yet for a Mefi Swap! Thanks for organizing, carsonb!

I've got my mix ready and my cover ready. I need to make sure I have all the bits required for packaging and sit down and make the packages now!

I sent out my mixes on Friday and just now added my cover art to the MefiSwap Cover Pool on Flickr.

I note that my mix shares two songs with ocherdraco's, the only other playlist posted here so far, which which I assume means we're all a having a dance party! *excitement*

Finished sequencing mine last night, and jessamyn's designing a cover for me, so it'll go out soon. My CD does what it says on the tin, so be alert, Cisticolae.

My mix is in the flickr group now, but it's on M. Brubeck's account. (I don't have a flickr account.) I'm really looking forward to getting mixes from my groups -- I've gotten Firei's so far and it's amazing.

I sent mine out a little while ago, and have received one (zinon’s Bollywood extravaganza) in return so far. I’m looking forward to getting Karlos’s mix and the others from my fellow Hirundininæ.

I've been making the booklets for my mix today. I've got two of them finished so far, and my place is a wreck.

I'm getting mine ready to send out on Tuesday, but fair warning: my liner notes are really plain compared to those in the Flickr pool. The message, however, is the same.

Mine went out a while ago (did you get it carsonb?) and have gotten one back so far - which is an awesome foray into 80s nostalgia thanks to curious_jp. Next time will have to remember to take a picture of them before sending - all the covers were different.

Yes! I got yours Athanassiel, thank you! I am so close to being finished putting mine together, and I'm looking forward to opening the packages I've received as soon as they're completely done. (I need the motivation to get mine finished, so I wait to listen to the ones I've received until after I mail mine out.) Three more discs to test-listen, four more envelopes to seal up, then they're ready to mail and I get to listen to new music, woo!

I'm mailing mine out tomorrow. I just have to do a few final things: Print out track lists, buy cases, put finishing touches on art. I'm still making my mind up about liner notes.

However it turns out, I've had a blast doing this.

I see the cat is helping.

Once I've confirmed receipt with all my Cisticolas, I'll be posting a download link. I've been promising myself that I'd set up a section of my Web site to download all prior mixes (which go back to Spring 2009) ... perhaps I'll get to that once I've finished prepping for an interview on Wednesday.

Shipped mine a couple of weeks ago and have received two so far. Interesting selections thus far - many of which I will be adding to my regular listening collection. Can't wait to see what's next!

I'm not a Flickrer, but you can see the track list here. Feel free to add it to the pool.

The mixes should've reached most everyone by now, so (spoilers!) it's a concept album about time travel, reincarnation, a "flat circle" universe, or whichever of these kinds of things you might subscribe to.

I've been listening to Pulposus' Australian Music mix all day, and it's been awesome. Seriously, these mix swaps are the best things ever.

Johann Georg Faust - I put your cover art in the Flickr pool.

I didn't take any pictures of the final result of the mess I posted before (you lucky recipients are getting something wholly [er, sort of] original!), but I made a little image with the track list on it to slip into the books alongside the CDs and put that in the pool. Nobody's received my mix yet as it just mailed out yesterday, so consider this link spoilery.

Myke - Yes, the cats 'helped' a bunch. Fair warning to all recipients of my mix: There is a non-trivial amount of cat hair incorporated into the packaging—allergics beware!

Can I just say that I really love being a part of everyone's conversations over email. It's damn cool watching y'all chat it up and express gratitude and enjoy music. Thanks for being a part of it all!

Well, it's been nine days since my mixes were mailed, so here's a handy link ... to all of my MeFi mixes since 2009!

I fought with computers all morning and not_on_display's cover art is done and mine is done and my mixes are In The Mail. I included a little letter in with them because I was afraid I was just not going to be able to do cover art at all. And while I was putting them together I realized that I just have one computer now (the movie watching one in my bedroom) that will even play CDs so I am going to have to have a Pajama'ed Listening Party when they all get here.

mine is all a personal improvement project to learn more about Africa which i know embarrassingly little about for a grown-up lady

posted by ghharr at 1:01 PM on May 31, 2014

Everybody I sent mixes to has either the physical copy delivered or a digital download while they wait for the mail to arrive so far afar, so I can go ahead and put the YT version here now. There's a playlist with most of the songs, but some of my favorite tracks just aren't on the youbetubes so here's a breakdown:

01 - Moondog - Oasis
02 - Roma 79 - The Map Is Not The Terrain (stream free on bandcamp)
03 - Future Islands - A Dream of You and Me
04 - Courtney Barnett - Avant Gardener
05 - Jib Kidder - Zombie Flack
06 - Jookabox - Zombie Teardrops
07 - The Sea & Cake - Sound & Vision
08 - Matmos - For the Trees
09 - Moondog - Oasis
10 - Ashkenazy - Rachmaninoff Prelude in G Minor
11 - SJ Esau - Frustrating (I found a live version.)
12 - Destroyer - El Rito
13 - mndsgn - Deerghalabati (Zeroh remix) (beatport)
14 - The Microphones - Instrumental
15 - Karena Youtz /The True Wheel - 9 minutes & 36 seconds-long poetry song (Evening Will Come poetry magazine)
16 - Matmos - For the Trees (Return)

I called it 'Vultures' just to be ironic. =D
& I totally misspelled 'Rachmaninoff' and 'Youtz' on the liners image, doh!

Oh crap that beatport link for track 13 doesn't play the whole thing for me (I was operating blind from behind a work firewall earlier). Here's a better link to the bandcamp track for free streaming:

I have three awesome Quails mixes so far and mine are now in the mail winging their way. I have a decent cover but no cool liner notes. My mix ended up being a surprise to me -- I'd started putting something together and noticed that three of the songs, oddly, had a mention of bells in them. So I thought, huh, I wonder how many songs I have access to that mention bells in one way or another? Turns out, quite a few. Thus my Ring Them Bells mix.

I made a mix of music from my town. You can see the cover here.

I was uploading that, and I got a bit carried away, and made a website version of the mix. There's embeds of the music and videos where I could find them.

Also, I made a couple extra hard copies, if anyone would like them, let me know I'm happy to send them out.

Thanks to all the members of the Bulbul group who sent me mixes. My mix was based on the 20 spiritual animals, or nahuals, of the Mayan tzolkin calendar. I added cover shots - and a scan of the nerdy notes trying to explain all this - to the Flickr cover pool. If you want to find out your own Nahual - which is based on the day you were born - you can do so here. MeMail me if you'd like a copy of the music uploaded to Drobox.
