Summer Camp/Movie Series Club Calendar - let's arrange it here.

Since we have a set timeframe, let's just set up a list now, in advance, that way we don't have to make frequent MetaTalk posts. Let's just do all that here.

Many of the movies we're discussing pop up as events, whether outdoor screenings or as part of festivals - which are perfect for meetups. For example, NYC Parks is showing Heavyweights on July 17th at the Alfred E. Smith Rec Center playground, and the AFI Silver Theatre just outside of DC is showing Meatballs August 10th & 11th as part of a Harold Ramis celebration.

Here are some summer movie schedules for other cities: Chicago | Seattle | LA | Minneapolis | Portland

Feel free to vote for what you want to see and when. The date will be when the FanFare post goes up (I feel as though Labor Day-ish is a fine end).

July 1: Wet Hot American Summer
July 8:
July 15:
July 22: Sleepaway Camp, crossover with Horror Club
July 29:
August 5:
August 12: Meatballs
August 19:
August 26:
September 2:

List of films mentioned in the previous post that aren't on the schedule:
Heavyweights
The Parent Trap (either one)
Adams Family Values
Little Darlings
Poison Ivy
Dirty Dancing
The Sandlot (this one pops up on a couple of those outdoor film schedules)
Jaws
A Walk on the Moon
To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything
Red Dawn
Tommy
Camp
Moonrise Kingdom

Some are camp movies, some are Camp Movies, it's fine. Don't feel limited to this list, you're welcome to suggest more.

Since I am doing the cult film club, maybe I can ask for an eventual pony from the mods: I wonder if it might not work out better to have a Talk page for Fanfare in the way we do for music?

That one has been asked and answered in another MeTa. Short version: mathowie says it's under consideration but MeTa is fine for now.

Excellent. Ta!

Is it actually a bad thing to have more posts in MeTa? I mean, these ones aren't big blow-ups or anything.

We could try talking about movies that have big blow-ups. I haven't seen Die Hard in a while.

Perhaps it could be sidebarred?

Don't the mods have to read everything in MeTa even if it's nominally not about site policy? That sounds like a bit of a burden under present circumstances.

(I wasn't concern-trolling. I was speculating an answer to Hoopo's question.)

I vote for a less (intentionally) comedic one for week two. A Dirty Dancing or a Little Darlings.

And since we have Sleepaway Camp set for July 22, what about Heavyweights for the following week (July 29), to be as close to the NYC outdoor screening as possible? Also that will be good for showing right away that not all camp experiences are as negative as Sleepaway Camp.

(Or jeez, what about Jaws for next week. I mean, Friday is the Fourth of July! And we will be open for business. It's going to be one of the best summers we've ever had! Unquote.)

I agree that a less comedic film is a good idea for this week, and second Jaws as a good choice. We could also put Addams Family Values on for next week, which preserves a nice balance of comedies and more serious movies through Sleepaway Camp the week of the 22nd. I don't think it's vitally important to keep that up forever, but for the first month keeping a balance seems decent.

Alternative proposal: alternate between Dirty Dancing and Adams Family Values every week for the rest of the summer.

Seriously, though, I think Jaws for next week sounds good and then maybe Adams Family Values the week after? Then the horror crossover then Dirty Dancing? If it helps I will carry a watermelon. I mean, we could also put it up to a vote I GUESS.

Also, come participate in the Wet Hot American Summer thread! It's a good movie and I'd like to hear what people think.

How does

July 8: Jaws
July 15: Addams Family Values
July 22: Sleepaway Camp, crossover with Horror Club
July 29: Dirty Dancing

sound?

Sounds great to me!

Meatballs + Jaws + Lost in America = What About Bob?

Yes, Troika! I am into this, and I am coming a bit late. I will watch Wet Hot American Summer in a few hours and then hopefully stay on top of the films in the coming weeks. YAY! Movie Clubs!

August 5th - To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything ?

Let's! It isn't terribly available on streaming services, so having the advance notice is a plus.

July 8: Jaws
July 15: Addams Family Values
July 22: Sleepaway Camp, crossover with Horror Club
July 29: Dirty Dancing
August 5: To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything

Delighted to have a strong representative of the "camp" part of Summer Camp!

So that leaves 3 weeks open in MeFi summer camp and like a gazillion solid movies that would be fun to watch. I feel like the final film should be something epically summer campy, but I don't know what.

Also, as I mentioned with the horror film club, I love having this stuff mapped out way in advance. I don't have a ton of time to watch movies, so the longer I know about it the better my chance of watching is.

I'm not sure if this would cause more horrendous work for the mods or less, but just as Music has Music Talk, would it be feasible to have FanFare Talk for FanFare? I've always liked that aspect of Music in the way it keeps relevant things together on one page, and to me it feels like a natural fit for planning posts and other related FF topics.

For future reference, I was just looking at the list of movies added to Netflix Instant today, and I spotted the Lindsay Lohan Parent Trap on there.

Okay, I've placed a few holds at the library. So far the length of lines matches up well to the distance away on the calendar -- well done!

ewok and chips: fair question, short answer is "not right now but it's being considered". See also way up at the top of the thread for an earlier mention.

So I know this post is old and no one is reading it anymore, but has anyone been thinking about the final 3 weeks of movies? I dont know if it exactly fits the bill, and it probably should have been watched earlier, but I would love love love love love to watch Dazed and Confused again and talk about it.
