GISHWHES Help! August 7, 2014 1:34 PM   Subscribe

A group of Mefites are participating in the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen. And we need your help with a few items that require people living in specific cities!

Here's a list of cities and locations where we need help:

A set of really simple tasks that require you to be somewhere at a particular time and take a photo with a nice person:
Wuhan, China (Thursday evening 7:30-8:30PM)
Doha, Qatar (Thursday 12:30-1:00pm)
New York, NY (Thursday, from 11:20 until 11:50am)
Toast, East Perth, Australia (Friday morning 8:00-8:30am)
Mornington Pier, Schnapper Point Dr., Mornington, Victoria, Australia (Friday at 1:00-1:30pm)

We also have some more involved tasks require someone in these cities or locations. And somebody who is really outgoing:
Filbert between Leavenworth and Hyde (this is San Francisco, Google tells me?)
Central Park
The Dyerville Giant
Baltimore, MD
Kensington Gardens

If you would be willing to help our team out, I will give you the full instructions and my eternal thanks.

Filbert between Leavenworth and Hyde (this is San Francisco, Google tells me?)

That is San Francisco. When is someone needed there? Also, when you say it needs someone really outgoing does that mean hassling strangers?

New York, NY (Thursday, from 11:20 until 11:50am)

It is 4:30 pm New York time on Thursday. Haven't we passed the deadline?
posted by EmpressCallipygos at 1:39 PM on August 7, 2014

Ah yeah sorry about the ones that are past due--I was copying and pasting from the list.

The second set is a variety of different items. Not all involve dealing with strangers. This is the SF one:

VIDEO. Use climbing gear - grappling hooks, ropes, and carabiners - to summit the mighty ascent of the sidewalk of Filbert between Leavenworth and Hyde. 33 POINTS (Video must be 15.7 seconds or less)
posted by divka at 1:41 PM on August 7, 2014

Also more cities I SHOULD have included above, instead of the ones that are past due:

Jameson Hall stairs, UCT, Cape Town, South Africa (Friday from 1:00 to 1:30pm)

Stonehenge monument in Wiltshire, United Kingdom (Friday from 5:00 to 5:30pm)
posted by divka at 1:42 PM on August 7, 2014

Oh I seem to be the only person who lives in San Francisco who doesn't own climbing gear.

The full list is here, in case you want to scope it out yourself instead of asking what the item involves. Just search for the location name.

Although please check in with me because there are various rules about the type of photos and videos we can use:

I live about five blocks from the San Francisco site but a lot depends on what the timing is.

the site may need me to register before viewing your link
posted by janey47 at 1:53 PM on August 7, 2014

All of the ones in the second set (including SF) just need to be finished so we can submit them before the end of the day on Friday. No other time restrictions for those!
posted by divka at 1:54 PM on August 7, 2014

Your request seems to break some of the Commandments of the Hunt.

... we expect YOU and YOUR TEAM to be the primary participants of each of the items. You are not permitted to crowd-source or purchase entire items from third-parties. This means if you tweet to a thousand of your followers for someone to make you one of the items and deliver you the image or video, this submission would be ineligible.
posted by FreezBoy at 1:55 PM on August 7, 2014

Ah, sorry about the site restriction! I will happily share details on any item--no obligation for asking :)
posted by divka at 1:55 PM on August 7, 2014

Ahhh, that's a good point FreezBoy. Perhaps we should focus on the photo items, where I believe this is an exception:

New York, NY (Thursday, from 11:20 until 11:50am)
Toast, East Perth, Australia (Friday morning 8:00-8:30am)
Mornington Pier, Schnapper Point Dr., Mornington, Victoria, Australia (Friday at 1:00-1:30pm)
Jameson Hall stairs, UCT, Cape Town, South Africa (Friday from 1:00 to 1:30pm)
Stonehenge monument in Wiltshire, United Kingdom (Friday from 5:00 to 5:30pm)
posted by divka at 1:56 PM on August 7, 2014

The deadline probably makes this not possible for me, but what's the Filbert between Leavenworth & Hyde item, just in case?
posted by janey47 at 1:57 PM on August 7, 2014

The commandments do also state that we can use our "social media communities" to connect "you to people and places", FYI. I agree that there definitely is a line we shouldn't cross.

The SF item is the one detailed above.

Ha, good one. Nope, no can do. Good luck all!
posted by janey47 at 2:06 PM on August 7, 2014 [1 favorite]

No worries! Honestly, these are all a long shot for us! If we could get someone to show up to one of the photo sites then I've feel like this was a huge win.

I will check in on this thread once in a while, as will other folks from the group. I need to get back to building this weird birdhouse.

For those concerned about the outsourcing: This is point 24 of the commandments. Reaching out to friends, communities and strangers is definitely allowed and even encouraged, and I am pretty sure it is expected for the "find a stranger in location XY" items. We are ready to take the risk if someone is willing and able to help us out!

Kensington Gardens in London? What is the task?
posted by Pallas Athena at 2:53 PM on August 7, 2014

IMAGE. Build a miniature fairy house in Kensington Gardens. It must be constructed entirely from natural objects found in the park, no synthetic materials. If you build next to another team's fairy house, extra points. 18 POINTS

Jinx, Skybly. And yeah, I'm guessing that they mean London? *shrugs*

Ooh! This is a thing I could do. I mean, my house might suck. But I could do it, unless anyone else wants to call dibs.
posted by Pallas Athena at 3:04 PM on August 7, 2014

divka, MeMail me the email you'd like the photo sent to? I will try and get this done tomorrow if possible.
posted by Pallas Athena at 3:06 PM on August 7, 2014

Trust me, if you could see this birdhouse I am building right now then you would not be worried about your own house constructing skills.

What's the Baltimore task? I have an insane schedule the next few days and probably can't help, but now I'm curious!
posted by JannaK at 3:22 PM on August 7, 2014

The Baltimore task involves delivering items to a retirement home and meeting some residents. I'd be happy to purchase the items for this, if anybody is willing to be the deliverer.
posted by divka at 3:23 PM on August 7, 2014

Just saw that the deadline for GISHWHES is tomorrow. Wouldn't be able to help til Sunday at earliest, sorry! Best of luck!!

The Baltimore thing is tomorrow? I might be able to do that. What are the details?
posted by rue72 at 3:46 PM on August 7, 2014

For the Baltimore Item:
A 15s video about this: There is a retirement home in Baltimore, MD called Rolland Park Place. My grandmother lives there. Bring flowers, chocolate or funny homemade or store-bought cards for some of the residents. Since this is a bit nepotistic, if Rolland Park Place is out-of-the-way for you, do the same at another retirement home. You must interact with the residents.

It would be awesome if you could do this. :)
posted by StarlightKB at 5:01 PM on August 7, 2014

And there are more location items set:
- S. Joao da Madeira, Portugal (Friday from 3:00 to 3:30pm)
- Park Las Heras, Buenos Aires, Argentina (Friday, from 11:00 to 11:30am)
- Churchill High School, Livonia, Michigan (Friday from 8:00-8:30pm)
If anyone lives there and can help at the time, let us know.

I can do this. So I know who to ask for and who to say I'm visiting on behalf of, what's the grandmother's name and what's the grandchild's name? Where can I pick up the stuff to deliver (you said you could get the supplies yourself)? Also, where should I email or send the link to the video (I'll be using an iPhone)? (If you'd prefer, feel free to respond by memail).

I'll try to set off sometime after the morning rush-hour (I'm coming from NoVa), so I'll probably be leaving around 9:30/10-ish, and it usually takes me about an hour and a half to get up to that area of Bmore (I used to live nearby, it shouldn't be a problem to get to that particular retirement home).

Are videos allowed to be used by more than one team? As it happens, I am a New York Times bestselling author and I already sent another team a 16-second video of myself reading from the California driver's manual. Will happily to do for any MeFi team if the rules allow; just MeMail me.

Also, don't waste your time looking for an odd number which is the sum of its proper divisors.

escabeche, Commandment 19 states that we can't use a vid created by another team.
19. Video/Image Plagiarism. You shall not submit any items that were created by another team. Any team that is caught submitting another team's item shall be eligible for disqualification. You may not submit any items that were taken before this year's hunt. You may not submit any items that cause digestive bloating to the viewer. Reminder: with Google image search it is a simple process of confirming the originality of images and videos. We have algorithms and ex-NSA hackers on our team and we will ferret out fraudulent submissions and immediately disqualify all members of the offenders' teams.
By extension, I don't think we can use a video created for another team.

How would you feel about recording a fresh vid for us? We would surely appreciate it.

Misha won't stop adding more photo opportunities, it seems. We're also looking for anyone in MOSCOW, RUSSIA. The photo will be 8:00 PM to 8:30 PM Moscow time. As always, I can post specifics... if anyone is reading the comments down here.

Dear Metafilter, your members are awesome. I've gotten a few pictures already that have made me smile like a moron.

Short list of thanks, continued: rue72, bryn, kreestar, Pallas Athena, and undue influence. Thanks for helping--whether it resulted in a completed item or not, it made us all so so happy. You are the best.

Also thanks to those people that I know would have run out to do this if there had been a photo opportunity near them. You are also the best.
