I can't believe I made the podcast! Thanks for liking my app!

And yeah, Jessamyn, App Inventor is pretty awesome. I've never programmed anything before and was able to do this. I'm guessing your more code-immersed than I am, so you could definitely make an app with this.

On the topic of getting pictures of students, I have 150+ students in a class and just pass the device around while I'm teaching the first class and tell students to please take a selfie and enter their names if they're comfortable doing so. I wasn't sure how it would go over, but just about everyone does,. Students who are late even come down after class or the next class to add themselves. I think they're pretty eager to feel like their profs know their names.

Matt, there was a story on opb the other day about an online vinyl store/merged reseller database startup thing. Discogs, I think. Based in Pdx, even.

Music geek pedantry: they're called "record players," not "vinyl players," and it is possible to get very good at identifying specific tracks, if you want to play a specific track. And Amazon actually sells a surprising amount of vinyl. Indie labels sell vinyl albums (mind you, not 180 gram heavy vinyl) for less than $20, and singles are sometimes a few bucks, which is pretty sweet.

janell, here's the OPB story on Discogs first in-person record sale. (Discogs started as an effort to catalog electronic/dance records, then expanded to cover hip-hop, then rock and jazz, and slowly went from there to where it is today. I forget when sales were included in the site, but that wasn't the original goal of the site. [If you want to be regaled/overwhelmed by Discogs history, just ask - it was my obsession before MetaFilter.)

"Super chilling. Super UEUGHHHHHHHHHHH."

I'm so honored!!!!!

(And holy shit, that article was hard to write. I felt like it had to be done, though. I actually pitched to The Guardian and they said no, but mental_floss has been surprisingly/awesomely open to well-researched, in-depth history stuff and I've done a few more pieces for them since. None with numbers in the title.)

Finished the podcast this morning, which included another games review. I love it when the podcasts do one, this months being Kitten Clicker that starts at at 1:02:18. Cue lots of frantic clicking noises, Matt complaining that his fingers hurt already, and Jessamyn's observations which form a neatly concise clicker game summary:

This is a game?!!

I got wood!

Advanced catnip technology?!

I'm going to be able to make a hut soon!

Are there any pictures in it?

So this is good because it's confusing?!!

Not really, and I don't even have an Android-platform phone, but maybe I should get one. This is one of the first things that has made me lean in that direction....

As one of the overly picky moderators who was trying to stay on top the ever-growing queue of submissions, I remember a lot of inside baseball stuff about gripes about the site, the moderators, and the guy who ran the site by himself (teo), who tended to make bold decisions in a vacuum, much to the chagrin of the volunteer moderators and international userbase. I'll see if I can put together something that isn't just weird minutae of managing a database of user submissions.

Can you also put that latter thing together for under the fold?

anotherpanacea : Everyone who sees this is asking me about an iOS version. Unfortunately, I'm not a programmer and I have no budget to hire one. There don't seem to be any tools like App Inventor for iOS. I would have to learn an actual programming language, which I don't have time to do. So, basically, I would love to make an iOS version, but Apple forbids the tools and I lack the programming knowledge to do it tool-less.

Cue lots of frantic clicking noises

Normally I cut out keyboard noises (sometimes cortex answers a contact form email in the middle of a podcast while jessamyn or I are rambling on) but I thought the clicker clicky sounds were so hilarious and they just keep going while we talk over them and act like we're not actively playing them that I left them in since they work to good effect.

Oh god, it's almost a shame the Animals Ingesting Things thread didn't go up a few days later. To answer the podcast's question, I have NOT seen the GoT show yet. I'm holding off until I finish all the current books, but I am very curious to see how they cast certain roles and did certain scenes. I posted the first part of Feast for Crows today, it took me a few tries to get going because the beginnings of these books all drag. (So far I've been adding predictions to the prediction log page when I finish the whole book, just to consolidate the futzing around required.)

We have like ten or twelve, on the way. Are you just counting one from each person. Are you counting by fingers or by people or by photo?

By photo. There were a whole bunch of "googled" photos of celebrities (which are nice), but I tossed them all out. I want pictures expressly made for me. Selfish? My birthday.

jessamyn - regarding remember student names - I have a great memory, just not for names. I think it's because names are too abstract and don't have any concrete meaning to me until I really find out who a person is.

Nonetheless, when I was teaching (technology), I took a head shot of every student in the class on day 1. For a 25 student class, I could get that task done in under 10 minutes, which for a class of 7th graders on day 1 is honestly not that bad - they're squirrely no matter what.

If you're hell-bent on not taking up class time, make your very first assignment be "send me a selfie via email".

I printed the results on a single sheet with the student's first name under their and had it in my lesson plan book for the class. Pro-tip - if you leave it for the sub when you're out, you eliminate the game of students masquerading as each other and trying to get each other into more trouble.

Regarding colorblindness: a friend of mine is a well-known illustrator, and red-green colorblind, yet he manages to produce gorgeous work (some NSFW). Through long experience he's learned which shades of muddy brown correspond to red and which to green. It amazes me.
