metafilter: a series of pithy quotes March 25, 2015 12:50 PM   Subscribe

Has anyone ever collected all of the comments on metafilter that start with "Metafilter: "... ?

I have a vision of a tiny little book that contains a series of quotes on one page "metafilter: ..." and some silly illustration on the other page. I'm not actually going to do this, but I would love to see a list of all the "metafilter: ..." quotes ever posted.

Unfortunately google doesn't seem to take quotation marks all that seriously, so I can't do a simple google for this.

Yep, some folks did it manually on a couple occasions back in the early 00's, and then I've run a script against the db every couple of years since then, usually when it comes up again in Metatalk. Looks like the last time was late 2012: here's my comment, with links to dumps for both Metafilter and (less common) Metatalk taglines.

I'll poke around and see about doing another update.

Also, to be less circuitous, here's links to the two tagline files:
- Metafilter taglines
- Metatalk taglines

And here's the comment with some methodology notes from when I first wrote that script up in 2007.

Also, if I remember right, someone at some point made (or at least started work on) a greasemonkey script that would serve up random taglines from this dump as a custom motto on the front page near the logo.

This is great stuff. A fun exercise is to try and guess the topic of the fpp based on the content of the "Metafilter: ...".

wow, that's awesome!

thanks all!

Now, let me say this: a terribly cute pony would display a random tagline on the front page (perhaps with a link to the original comment), perhaps opt-in, for members only (would confuse the heck out of non-members, methinks).

Didn't that used to happen?

The aforementioned greasemonkey script (or one like it, if it didn't turn out to exist) is the way to go on that front; actually formally including that as a site feature drawing randomly from an open, unedited pool of taglines seems like a bad idea given that we don't have any idea what someone might toss after "Metafilter:" in any given case.

Just in case newer members (well, you know, relatively, because I think they disappeared a decade ago or more), the ovoid Metafilter logo image used to have a number of variants with taglines on them, rotated randomly on page load. I don't remember all of them, or even how many there were, but I do remember

Metafilter: The Plastic.com it's OK to like
Metafilter: More addictive than crack
Metafilter: We're all in this together (I think this was one)

That's where the taglining tradition got its start. Anybody remember the rest?

(There might be a canonical list on the wiki, but I can't check because it's blocked by the filter here at work under the category 'Games', which, yeah, OK.)

2000 - "weblog as conversation"
2000 - "as meta as we wanna be"
2000 - "meta-meta-meta-madness"

2001 - "self-policing since 1999"
2001 - "we're all in this together"
2002 - "All your post are belong to us"
October 2001 - "More addictive than crack" with Bert
Nov 2001 - SpookyFilter. "Forget politics, today's about gorging on candy."
2001 - "the Plastic.com it's okay to like"
2001 - "you're wrong. no you're wrong!"
2001 - "just the taglines"
2002 -" now wasting 12% more work hours"
2003 - "Self-Policing since 1999"
2004 - MetaFilt-ARR - "dead posts tell no tales"
2005 - ditto?
2005 - "fair and balanced"
2005 - "I voted AND IT TOTALLY SUCKED"

Here's the web archive version, complete with images.

I would really like someone to update the This Is Just To Say... Tumblr and considered just making my own around the same time I was avoiding-work-working on A Land Of Contrasts, but now I am hosed at work and do not have the time to curate (by which I mean site-specific Google search for key phrase and copy/paste) one for the poems.

So basically someone else please do this. All the better if you are smarter than me and can code it.
