The Great Mefi Merchandising Wishlist June 15, 2015 4:15 PM   Subscribe

Let's collect together in one place all the random suggestions from the past year for sayings people would like to see, types of merchandise they would like to see, et al. New suggestions also welcome.

This in no way obligates the staff to act on any of this. This is intended purely as a convenience for them should their vague, hand-wavy intent to do more merchandising become more concrete. The intent is to make it easier to find this information so as to facilitate better merchandising efforts in the future. All decisions as to how to use the information are completely up to the staff.

(Insert another 6 pages of provisos and fine print that I am too lazy to write.)

Sure, this is a good place for an idea roundup. The current Topatoco t-shirt store is here if people are curious.

A couple of notes, just so people don't feel mis-led on what to expect:

1) Merch would probably be more for fun than for fundraising, based on past t-shirt sales. We're totally on board with doing merch mainly for fun.

2) We haven't looked into what various options would cost or what would be feasible, so we're not able to commit to anything in this thread.

But yay for fun ideas and contemplating new MeFi physical incarnations!

LobsterMitten: both, in that I'd like it to be recognizable to only other people who know what metafilter is, but not so obscure that someone would wonder if they were imagining too much and not say something. Like, just the color scheme could be a coincidence, but a coffee cup with that color scheme that said "Friend of Matt" would work. I know I'd say something if I saw someone with a sneaky MeFi signal on a laptop in the airport or something like that.

How about a laptop sticker with the IPA pronounciation of "mefite." Would need at least two versions though, ha.

I think you can't go wrong with a straight logo (old school, pre-modernization), or just the MF in the box.

The in-jokes rotate and quickly become dated, and nobody can decide which is the funniest of the site's catch-phrases, and IMHO none of them are half as funny as people think they are when taken out of context and put on something. A mug with 'taters' on it? No thanks. A mug with the straight-up Metafilter logo? Yes, please.

Just my two cents - some folks seem to really want the in-jokes, rotational sayings and oddities (crouton-petter or whatnot).

I really like my SciShow mug. Black with a bright green interior, and the logo etched in bright green. In this case, Metafilter in black, yellow-green and blue. (Standard size, and maybe a 16 oz option.) (Alternatively, just MeFi in really big letters)

In answer to LobsterMitten, I always liked "Friend of Matt H". I suspect most reference type taglines would appeal to a smaller set of people than logo options, only because not everyone likes the same ones. Is my guess. (Which doesn't mean they are a bad idea but maybe I'd try to pick more than one.)

I'm for mugs and socks and fantastic underwear (but more than one kind of panty, I think, or just not a thong please) and the super-secret, almost unbranded t shirt. "MF" is too declarative for my comfort, personally (but suspect I'm an outlier that way). A t shirt with a wee sock on it, maybe, for the shy?
posted by cotton dress sock at 10:10 PM on June 15, 2015 [2 favorites]

I think a triplet is not enough, we also need to bring in FanFare purple! Because purple is a great colour! Would love t-shirts (V necks came up one of the other times this was being talked about, I agree, especially if such a thing as V neck men's/unisex shirts exists, since I am too large for lady shirts - well, American Apparel lady shirts anyway, since American Apparel ladies apparently only go up to size 14 or so - but I like V necks). Sweatshirts/hoodies would also be really cool.

In terms of what would go on the shirts, I think it would be cool to have, for example, a blue one with a plate of beans on the front (you might need an empty tin labelled "beans" just to make it clear what the small roundish objects are) and the Metafilter logo on the back. We could have a green one with a snowstorm/bunch of snowflakes on the front and AskMeFi on the back. The grey one could be gender neutral figures hugging and MetaTalk on the back. I am not sure what should be on the FanFare one. But there should be one, because have I mentioned what a great colour purple is?

"Animals of MetaFilter", YES.
also "Foods of MetaFilter"

We'd desperately need someone with skillz far beyond a doofus such as I to bring some of these concepts to reality.

Probably best to have an open call for designs (this is where you'd need to get some guidance from the merch makers on how to submit designs) and then do something like the Shirt.Woot Derby to determine what would have the most demand. Then we need another poll to determine what kinds of items would be wanted: shirts (and how many of which sizes or styles - the shirt colors would go with the designs), hats, mugs, pins, coasters to rest our cans of Pepsi Blue on... and make public some specifics for pricing from the merch makers before we start production (as well as making sure we can get shirts, etc. that ARE MetaFilter Blue or FanFare Purple).

And I'm still volunteering to do some of the grunt work in setting this all up just as a contribution to the site (I think it'd be more important to pay a small royalty to whomever comes up with the best designs). Because Logistics is where "doing it just for fun" can become "don't bother to do it all".

I am going to literally cut and paste my other comment on this subject:

"Speaking of merchandise: one thing that would be awesome would be framed prints of certain Metafilter comments/quotes. I can think of a lot of comments that I go back and re-read, and that I forward to friends, and I would love to be able to display them somehow.

I realize this might be tricky from a copyright standpoint, so maybe it isn't do-able. But if comments were nominated for it, and the authors were up for it? There are so many pieces of wisdom in here that I would enjoy hanging on my wall/giving as gifts."

Oh, and maybe some kind of card that conveys "That won't be possible." Business card? Greeting card? Mask you can put over your face with that text on it so that the person trying to pressure you can't keep getting in your face? Crime scene tape with the phrase written on it that you can wrap around yourself?

If there are T-shirts my request is for them to be super-soft/comfy/quality rather than a logo slapped on a cheap T-shirt. The T-shirts I save and wear again and again are the pre-softened kind with the screenprinted designs that don't crack after a few washings. Just looked in the clothes hamper and the best brands seem to be American Apparel (potentially more palatable now that their CEO is gone?) and District Clothing. I have a TopatoCo T-shirt for my favorite podcast and unfortunately it has not stood up to multiple wearings.

Given how much work the shirts seem to be, I wonder if using a service like Cotton Bureau might be easiest; put up the design, let them handle the preordering/printing/shipping.

I'd be game for regular (indoor, ceramic) mugs, or less destructible camping mugs, or water bottles, or travel mugs, with the [+] on one side and the old-school "MF" icon on the blue field on the other.

Indoor mugs should probably have variations with colorways for the subsites. The MetaTalk one should have the [!] instead of the [+]. The mugs should have the original yellow on the interior (and site-appropriate exterior).

I like the idea of merch as shibboleth for the shy to securely find meetups, especially for those of us who don't wear shirts with words.

Okay guys, I have another AWESOME t-shirt idea: Mods as superheroes! Maybe a design something like this or this where the little super hero figures are all lined up in a row, and then on their super hero uniforms they could have the mefi logo and their username. And of course we have to include past and present mods and pb!

Everyone should have a different color uniform. Maybe something like this:

mathowie: MeFi blue
jessamyn: Ask green
cortex: MeTa grey
taz: Midnight mod! Maybe dark purple? Like fanfare in dark mode in the new design?
LobsterMitten: Would a red uniform with lobster mittens for hands be too obvious? Or at least a red uniform? I'm already starting to run out of colors!
gnfti: Music Mod? Dark grey maybe? Or maybe the goldenrod/yellow color like we have for links and text?
vacapinta: How about professional white? I feel like someone should be professional white.
And pb should just be a wizard. Obviously.

Alternatively someone could have a teal uniform for MeFi projects. And apparently in dark mode IRL is orange, so that could work too. Of course, the mods should get final say on their awesome super hero uniforms.

Please make this happen. I'm so excited!

This is what I get for not knowing enough about sci fi (or comics or superheroes). Red isn't really a mefi color anyway, so let's scrap that idea. If we're making cortex Music Mod with a black uniform, what if LobsterMitten gets MetaTalk grey? After all, LobsterMitten has done a great job using her super human patience and mod-ly might to manage this other MeTa. Or we could print the shirt in MeTa grey, and then LobsterMitten could have Projects Teal. And bright orange seems like it might be a fitting choice for gnfti.

Please remember that the policy here is that members keep the copyright to their own words, so that would complicate a project of this sort. Not necessarily a deal breaker, but not as straight forward as it might seem. (I have been assuming that if any recipe books got done, there would first be a thread asking for members to contribute their own original recipes and agree to have it published blah blah blah. This suggestion looks a good deal trickier to me than that.)

Could this be funded in the way that the Order of the Stick merchandise was funded? That way there wouldn't be any question about what products should be made, whether they would sell out and others be left on the shelf.

Sticking to the logo on most items for simplicity. Maybe the badges (buttons) could be all of the meme ideas and in jokes from which you would get a random selection?

As an illustration (apologies for any missed ideas, I have just skimmed the thread):
$5 gets you badges (buttons), mug options or tattoos,
$10 car sticker, pins or fridge magnets,
$25 for T-shirt options, all the badges (buttons) or underpants,
$40 for the hoodie,
$100 for some selection of the previous.
$300 gets you everything plus a signed portrait of a bunny with a pancake on it's head or a moderator or something,
$beeellion gets you everything plus a signed photo of all the mods wearing their superhero costumes posed in a format of your choice.

Get something similar sorted for Christmas delivery (not Quonsmas. Quonsmas is special) and you have at least 4000 possible customers and probably a lot more.
