Metafilter Fantasy Football (American/Morally Dubious Style) August 11, 2015 7:44 AM   Subscribe

Yes, the NFL is depraved, criminal, and run by a shambling husk of a man with bloodslush where his brain should be. That being said, fantasy football remains amazingly fun.

Having decided I don't waste enough time on trivial pursuits "on computer", I'm looking for another league to join this year. I see in past years that there's been a Metafilter league, but can't tell if there's a consistent league that's renewed from year to year.

If there's not a set league, consider this my offer to start one for this season. If there is an existing league, any interest in a second? I'm happy to play commissioner and handle the admin stuff in either case.

I'm flexible on size and playing for $ or not, but strongly prefer head-to-head. I know of one other Metafilter lurker definitely interested, so we'd have room for 6-10 more players.

I ran one of the two MeFi leagues last year, but said depravity has gone too far for me to participate in good conscience. If you'd like to pick up the properly-inflated ball and run with it, by all means go ahead.

Got it! I begrudge no one a clean conscience.

Anyone else still holding this shameful vice, mention here or shoot me a memail if you'd like to play. When there's a quorum, I'll set up a league and we can hash out other details.

I'm not sure "morally dubious" creates any degree of differentiation between football and soccer; they're both pretty evil. I'm interested in playing, though. What service were you thinking of using?

I'm partial to Yahoo (over ESPN, at least; haven't played on CBS or any tertiary options like the official NFL service or whatever.) Having commissioned there before, I'd be inclined to do so again, unless everyone's participation is contingent on locating elsewhere.

I'm interested!

I'm interested in Yahoo. Last year, watching my wife's office pool, where a bunch of librarians all tried to not win too much or too little, made me realize how much fun it is to actually play against people who aren't using fantasy football for backchannel office microaggression.

I definitely prefer Yahoo, I'm in if someone sets it up. Or I can do it later if nobody is in to running it. I've run a family league for a few years that has gone well.

Sounds like we'll end up with enough interest, so I'm going to go ahead and set it up on Yahoo. I'll memail those of you who said you were interested with a link and password.

I'll set the league to 10 teams, so there's still plenty of space! Let me know if you want to get in on this amazing opportunity to draft Ryan Fitzpatrick now that he is, literally and somehow, a starting NFL quarterback again.

Drinky Die, your profile says you're not on memail that much so I sent an invitation to the gmail indicated in your profile as well.

(Very diligent commissioner alert)

I'm interested, though I'd definitely prefer getting to 10 players. 8 players was a little silly last year.

/s What's wrong with every team scoring 200 points per week? /s

Holey Moley, I didn't know about the curse. Poor Geno. What a way to lose playing time.

I love how other teams would be like "Geno sustained an unspecified injury during practice" and the Jets just say "Yeah, one of our scrubs coldcocked him."

ReadEvalPost, memailed you the league link.

I didn't the like the FF site last year, and stopped setting my team before the end of the season. But I'd be down with Yahoo.

I'd like to join!

So it looks like, if everyone who has indicated interest signs up (7 teams signed up so far), we'll have 10! I believe I've sent the invite link to everyone who has expressed interest - let me know if you didn't get it.

I'll give everyone the next couple days to sign up their team. If we've still got openings on Friday, I'll assume folks changed their minds and I'll open it up to first-come, first-serve signups by publishing the league and posting the link and password here.

Everyone OK with figuring out a draft time on the site message board? We can pick some likely dates and take a poll.

Good deal superfluousm - thanks for taking the initiative; I see a couple names from last year and the year previous also. Good luck all!

If one were interested but didn't actually know how to play fantasy, is there a webpage that explains how it all works?
posted by Pope Guilty at 10:52 AM on August 13, 2015

I daresay there are dozens, maybe even some of them good. This isn't a bad start.

Also, there's been enough interest that I went ahead and maxed out the league settings at 12 teams. I know that can make the waiver wire a bit of an adventure, but given the nature of Mefi thought it was better to err on the side of "more is merrier."

This is my first big stand as a commissioner and (Goodell weird face where he is trying to look somber and serious but it looks like a diaper blowout) I'm sorry if it upsets anyone

Yay, big league!

Hey PG, it's super easy. Sign up. You just pick players and you get points when they do good stuff. You try and form fair and balanced equally beneficial (try and rip them off as hard as you can) trades with others to improve your team. You don't even have to watch football to play it if you just like playing with numbers.

In! I have pared things down a bit; 4 leagues is too many leagues for me. But now it's just you guys and maybe one other. Let's do this thing!

I'm in if there are still free spots.
posted by reenum at 6:19 PM on August 13, 2015

Alas, we filled up overnight! The league is locked in at 12 teams for this season. I'm going to start a draft date poll & conversation on the league message board, so check in there and we'll get this thing started.

Can't wait to play fake computer numbers game with you all.

In on the overflow — still planning on just autograft?
posted by klangklangston at 4:14 PM on August 17, 2015

The Yahoo system lets you do live drafts with an auto backup, though the most important thing for me is having enough people to play rather than the form the draft takes. I'm a Lions fan, we take what we can get.

I've submitted a request to join via MetaMail, always wondered how fantasy football works, now's the time to find out.

And I'm a Seahawks fan... so I expect to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, or defeat from the jaws of victory....

If anyone's interested, I set up a Pro Football Pickem game at Yahoo.

I did it without the spread, and with confidence points. If anyone wants to play, it's Oinking for Love.

I guess message me for the code? Or would I just post it here?
