ok, so i logged in using an old userid and pass... and posted. but without being redirected here at all. the login process was apparently fully completed on mr. hockenberry's server. in fact, i'm simultaneously logged into both websites right now: mefi as mlang; furbo-filters as gassire. two separate cookies. yet, posting on furbo-filter shows up here. um... this is very bad, no? he's got a copy of the entire user database?

check out my little dialogue with self, held simply by clicking back and forth between open windows:

on metafilter
or, if you prefer:
on furbo-filters.

please, someone tell me this isn't as bad as i think it is.

A little more detail for furbo-filters.com:
Domain servers in listed order:
DNS9.REGISTER.COM 216.21.234.75
DNS10.REGISTER.COM 209.67.50.232

A search for "Craig Hockenberry" at the Iconfactory site does turn up a couple sets of icons, so he does work for them, or at least through them. This guy's been around for a while, having authored icon sets, Photoshop filters and icon creation utilities. Would he really be dumb enough to pull something like this?

Also, a search for him on Google reveals there was a FurboFilters site at some point(at least as recently as Jan27). Could it just be the case of some scrambled information? I once had someone else's site appearing instead of mine because of a screwup at the host.

Hunh. If memory serves, Furbo Filters used to be a joint venture of Jeffrey Zeldman and Craig Hockenberry of The Icon Factory. They made Photoshop filters. I had a few of 'em. I have no idea what this new turn of events is all about, though.

Actually, the mirror isn't quite complete. Notice that in the Janet Reno thread("In the case, Janet Reno vs. All Dance Parties That Suck...") the TrackBack count isn't listed on the main page, though they do still appear at the bottom of the individual page.
Another thing: Even though you might have a cookie, your preferences(most noticeably font size) aren't the same. At least mine aren't.

another weird thing is this:

<BASE HREF="http://www.furbo-filters.com/">

it shows up only in the source of the cached version (not the live one; and yes, i discovered it by accident) of the front page. which kinda points to this being an on-purpose kind of thing. i haven't seen anyone use that tag in a while.

What's the fear? That someone has stolen the code? Stolen the password file? Should we all run screaming into the streets? Or is this just Matt's problem? Or no problem at all?

> *brain explodes*

Ick. Chicken brains. Small but messy.

(Especially in quantities. I remember reading a news story about a guy whose job it was to fly around in a helicopter dropping chicken heads laced with rabies vaccine to fight off an epidemic in the wild. The helicopter crashed and his body was found in a mound of chicken heads.)

How the hey do things like this come to light, anyhow? Was someone doing a search for furbies?

Remember a few days ago when blogroots and metatalk were both redirecting to MeFi? Methinks it's something similar, and nothing to detonate one's head over.

I saw it in my referrer log a few days ago, but didn't think it was worth mentioning.

relax, I host the furbofilters.com site for Zeldman and Craig. When I did the server move, I forgot to add all the domains they have pointing at their real site.

Didn't anyone check the IP on the domain at samspade.org to see it's on the same exact machine?

i checked it on my console and posted that they were the same IP. then stavros brain exploded. shrug.

Yep, Matt just needs to configure the host headers. No conspiracy here.

Heh, no. I did a search for "Paranormal Deathmatch," the rock/paper/scissors game that was posted a few days ago, wondering who else picked up the story. Furbo-filters.com was the first google hit.

Sorry I came to this thread late. I had a really good in-joke about furbo-filters involving The Fast and the Furious, but now it seems rather pointless.
